“Know your history. The lessons of the past will shield you in times of doubt.”

Helloand welcome to my deck featuring one of the greatest storytellers in all of Kamigawa, Satsuki, the Living Lore! Satsuki is one of the new commanders from Kamigawa: Neon Dynasty and currently the only commander that cares specifically about sagas (Atraxa doesn't count!). While she's in great enchantment-centric colors, being limited to just does leave out a few of the best sagas in the game, which is unfortunate, but she has incredible art in both her normal and neon frames and I knew as soon as she was spoiled that I had to make a deck built around her no matter her colors or power-level. Even though Selesnya has an abundance of powerful enchanment synergies, I'm trying to keep this deck a bit more subdued and flavor > function focused. Expect some "subpar" card choices!

Before we get into the deck itself, a little bit about me (feel free to skip this part if you want, I really don't mind!). I've been playing Magic since early 2019 and have been playing mostly Commander/EDH since around the release of Throne of Eldraine. My usual playgroup consists of my two brothers with the rare fourth player being my brother-in-law. My meta consists of all the decks I have listed on here along with some others that I have made and currently have listed as private. When I first started playing Magic, the idea of going to a FNM/some sort of LGS event seemed crazy to me and I was content to just play at home. Once I started playing EDH, though, the urge to play and meet new people started to grow. I was about to dive into my LGS scene right around the time the covid-19 pandemic started. Because of that, I still haven't played with anyone outside of my own house, so please keep that in mind when commenting. I'm an avid deck-builder and I build decks around themes, lore and/or characters rather than broken/infinite combos. I have a LOT of decks but I've only posted a few of them on here publicly but am in the middle of restructuring my deck folders and making more of them public. Most of the decks I build are based around commanders that aren't as common or popular as, say The First Sliver or Atraxa, Praetors' Voice. While the term "budget" has a wide meaning, my decks do have one, so please do not recommend insanely overpriced cards such as Argothian Enchantress or Replenish as they're much too expensive for me to justify putting in this deck, no matter how good they'd be (Replenish in particular would be awesome). I'm also not really looking to add any "fast mana" sources such as Mana Vault or Mana Crypt or anything like that, so please do not recommend those either. With all that said, let's get into the deck!!

Members of the Living Historians don’t simply chronicle the past; they embody it.

There isn't much lore specific to Satsuki, unfortunately. We do know that she is a member of the Living Historians, a historical society that was founded by Reki, History of Kamigawa and Azusa, Lost but Seeking after the end of the Kami War from the original Kamigawa block with the goal of preserving knowledge in the wake of their quickly changing plane. Their greatest fear is that the history of their people and the world around them is being slowly forgotten in the face of ever-advancing technology. Even though the information they have may be partially incomplete, they strive to retell it as accurately as they can, without personal bias. They tattoo these stories onto their skin and literally bring them to life during performances with dance and music. These tattoos magically rise off their skin during performances to become almost living illustrations of the events in the story.

Satsuki, the Living Lore is a pretty straightforward commander. Her ability lets you put a lore counter on all the sagas you control and her death trigger either lets you return a saga or enchantment creature (specific!) to your hand or return a saga from your graveyard to hand. Her ability is the main focus of this deck as it puts lore counters on EACH saga you control. This means that, with some setup, you can have some massively powerful turns! Her death trigger is also great because we'll be churning through sagas pretty quick and her low cost means that recasting her won't be an issue, especially since we have access to . Our main gameplan here is the typical enchantress gameplan - just pure value. Play lots of enchantments, draw lots of cards, make lots of tokens. That's about it!

I've chosen to run a total of 20 sagas in this deck, this includes every Neon Dynasty saga in , no matter how bad they are. Like I briefly mentioned earlier, this deck is a flavor > function kind of thing and the Neon Dynasty sagas are all must-includes because of it.

Calix, Destiny's Hand is the only planeswalker in the deck at the moment. All three of his abilities are relevant at basically any point of the game. The filtering effect from his +1 is nice, but not quite as powerful in a 100card format, the -3 removal is always useful (be careful of using this when Sterling Grove is on the battlefield as the only legal target for it will be Sterling Grove itself!) and his -7 is as close as I'm ever going to get to playing Replenish. He's a great enchantment-focused planeswalker that I don't think is as popular as he should be and needs a home in more decks!

This deck runs five "enchantress" style creatures. Satyr Enchanter, Mesa Enchantress, Verduran Enchantress,, Eidolon of Blossoms and Sythis, Harvest's Hand. Some combination of these (and/or others!) are a key component to keeping the deck going. Having more than one on the field at once can result in hand overload, though, so be careful!

Archon of Sun's Grace and Ajani's Chosen are both fantastic token generators. A lot of our sagas have token creating effects and these two cards help bolster our token sub-theme we have going on.

Jukai Naturalist and Herald of the Pantheon both help to reduce the costs of the enchantments we cast and Sanctum Weaver offers an insane amount of ramp.

Grateful Apparition and Evolution Sage are two pretty simple uncommons from War of the Spark. Sage proliferates upon landfall and Apparition proliferates upon dealing combat damage. These two effects, along with Satsuki, mean that would could potentially power through an entire saga in one turn!

Weaver of Harmony and Kami of Transience are both cards from Neon Dynasty that fit in perfectly here. Kami buffs itself with enchantment casts and has trample. Whenever an enchantment (Probably a saga) hits the graveyard, it an return itself from graveyard to hand, making it an easily recurable threat. Weaver offers a small buff to our enchantment creatures, which all of the double-sided Neon Dynasty sagas turn into, and can copy activated/triggered abilities from enchantment sources. Double saga triggers? Yes, please!!

Finally, we have Monk Idealist for recovery and Celestial Ancient, which synergizes really well with our token generating effects.

This deck runs a total of 20 sagas - Nine white, nine green and two multicolor. There are a total of 22 sagas (as of posting) in Selesnya colors. One thing I knew for sure during deckbuilding is that I absolutely did not want Fall of the Thran as land destruction is not my thing. I decided to cut The Mending of Dominaria to make things even as it was the least impactful non-NEO saga in green.

Listed below is each saga and a very brief summary of it's effects :

Battle for Bretagard - Tokens, tokens, more tokens!

Fall of the Impostor - +1 counters and removal

History of Benalia - Tokens and a Knight-specific buff

Elspeth Conquers Death - Removal, a nice tax effect and some recovery

The Restoration of Eiganjo   - Ramp, recovery and flips into a creature that makes tokens

The Fall of Lord Konda   - Removal and some defense

The Birth of Meletis - Ramp and a blocker

Michiko's Reign of Truth   - A really nice All That Glitters effect for two turns and then flips into a creature with All That Glitters as it's base stats

Triumph of Gerrard - Buffs and evasion

Befriending the Moths   - Smaller buffs and evasion

Era of Enlightenment   - Defense

Jugan Defends the Temple   - Ramp, buffs and a potentially large creature once it flips

The First Iroan Games - The best saga in the deck! A token, a buff, card draw AND ramp in one!

Teachings of the Kirin   - A small token and a small buff that flips into a graveyard-hating creature

The Dragon-Kami Reborn   - A cheap way to play free stuff

Boseiju Reaches Skyward   - Ramp that flips into a potentially large creature

The Binding of the Titans - Some graveyard hate and recovery

Song of Freyalise - Ramp!

Azusa's Many Journeys   - More ramp!

Tales of Master Seshiro   - A small buff that flips into a decent sized creature (with haste!)

We also run a handful of other, non-saga enchantments in addition to our sagas.

Enchantress's Presence needs to explanation. It's another "enchantress" style effect.

Mirari's Wake and Fertile Ground are enchantment based ramp. Wake also offers up a small buff to our creatures and I've been wanting to squeeze it into a deck since I opened it from a Modern Horizons 2 pack last year.

Authority of the Consuls offers us some defensive measure against aggro decks and only costs .

Promise of Bunrei and Sigil of the Empty Throne both tie into our token subtheme. Sigil is obviously leagues better than Promise, which is a flavor fit and nothing more.

Sterling Grove and Privileged Position both help keep our board of enchantments in one piece.

Seal of Primordium, Seal of Cleansing and Touch the Spirit Realm are enchantment based removal. I'm sure there are better options than Spirit Realm, but it's a flavor thing, so it's in!

Lastly, we have a new card from the New Capenna commander decks that found a perfect home in this deck, Resourceful Defense. This card is a powerhouse and should be an auto-include in basically any Satsuki deck. Whenever a permanent you control leaves the battlefield, if it had counters on it, put those counters on target permanent you control. This offers us some insane possibilities of powering through MULTIPLE sagas in one turn. It can also move counters from permanent from permanent, which is really useful for repeating certain saga chapters (like the removal ones or the card draw ones). This card is GREAT!

Since most of our deck is enchantment based, we only run a handful of instants and sorceries.

Farewell is a very thematic board-wipe.

Aura Mutation, Swords to Plowshares and Fade into Antiquity are all for removal. Might swap these out later for more enchantment based removal.

Eladamri's Call is a great creature tutor. Idyllic Tutor tutors for an enchantment and Search for Glory tutors for a legendary card or a saga, making it a must have for Satsuki decks.

Resurgent Belieff, Brought Back, Faith's Reward and Season of Renewal are all sources of recovery for our sagas once they've told their story. Resurgent Belief, in particular, can be a game-ender!

Storyweave offers us another way to power though sagas.

This deck only runs four artifacts. Sol Ring and Arcane Signet are obvious but the other two are key cards to any Satsuki deck, Strionic Resonator and Power Conduit. Resonator is a powerful trigger-copying machine that can help us make the most out of our sagas and Conduit is arguably the best card in the deck as it lets you remove counters from sagas, giving you the ability to bounce between the two chapters you really want. Having this and Satsuki on the board at the same time can lead to some incredible value!

Basic lands are from Neon Dynsasty. The full-art ones are absolutely gorgeous in person and the normal art ones are some of my favorites from the last few years.

Fabled Passage is the deck's only proxy. I have a few copies of the card but they're all in other decks at the moment.

Blossming Sands (NEO) is a flavor include.

Utility lands that deserve special mention are Hall of Heliod's Generosity for obvious reasons, Nesting Grounds and Karn's Bastion for their counter manipulating shenanigans and Reliquary Tower, which is a must have once multiple enchantress effects hit the field.

If you are planning on building your own Satsuki deck, some key cards/staples that I'd recommend for basically every deck would be -

None so far! Will update once it sees some games.

Proxies - Fabled Passage

Sleeves - Dragon Shield Matte (Ivory)

Deck Box - Ultimate Guard 100 (Clear)

Playmat - //////

Nothing here yet! Currently planned decks are Kotori, Pilot Prodigy to represent Kamigawa's future (since this deck represents Kamigawa's past), and Isshin, Two Heavens as One and Yuriko, the Tiger's Shadow to represent samurai/ninjas. Also debating a Kosei, Penitent Warlord/Isao, Enlightened Bushi deck and/or a Kyodai, Soul of Kamigawa clones deck.

That's everything for now! Recommendations are welcome but please remember that no matter how bad some of them may be, the Kamigawa sagas are permanent fixtures of this deck and will not be removed.

Thanks!
