Creature (92)

Currently working on a massive write up for the deck explaining how it works, card by card breakdown, the genesis of the deck and so on. Please be patient and hang tight while I work on it. It should be done soon!

Also please excuse the massive Maybe board. I like to use this site as a good resource for remembering cards as my notebooks can often get too cluttered with notes and ideas.

Updates Add

Decided to start a change log and this first one is going to be a doozy. I haven't edited this deck on here in awhile and I've made 32 changes in total - 16 cards in and 16 cards out. One of the main things I've been attempting is lowering the overall CMC of the deck which is still something I'm trying to do.

IN:

  • Panharmonicon - With the amount of ETB type creatures this deck is running (21) this becomes a very powerful card.
  • Traverse the Ulvenwald - I overlooked this card for a long time until I saw it in someone's build on here - wish I could give credit as it was an excellent build, but I can't remember who it was! Overall this deck loves land tutors, plus the creature tutoring isn't irrelevant either and this card isn't dead early game if I'm really starving for even a basic land = great card.
  • Plaguecrafter - Fleshbag Marauder and Merciless Executioner have their flaws and this card does an excellent job of avoiding those flaws and always staying relevant.
  • Living Wish - A recent add and one that's very playgroup dependant on if they allow wish cards and sideboards so I'm going to test it out. I created a 15 card sideboard mainly with different hate cards depending on who I'm playing but I may have to trim it to 10.
  • Assassin's Trophy - Fairly straightforward. It's excellent cheap targeted removal.
  • Izoni, Thousand-Eyed - Creates a swarm of black AND green tokens. Plus it comes with an affordable sac outlet ability that draws cards. Sign me up!
  • Razaketh, the Foulblooded - I've toyed around with this one for awhile because it's a little bit playgroup dependant. Usually you're just tutoring combo pieces to win the game outright which somewhat casual playgroups don't like or the playgroup is very competitive so a 8CMC creature can be a bit expensive. Still using it though, but it could actually get the chop despite how powerful it can be.
  • Zulaport Cutthroat - An extra Blood Artist except in multiplayer it hits everyone instead of targeting.
  • Kalitas, Traitor of Ghet - I'm guessing everyone already knows how good this card is from other formats, but at 4CMC it helps provide grave hate and it generates tokens. Amazing card.
  • Priest of Forgotten Gods - At 2CMC it's cheap, but really it's a later play card because you'll want some fodder down before you start using it. Overall though the effect is fantastic so it's a no-brainer inclusion.
  • Midnight Reaper - Basically an extra Grim Haruspex except it loses you life, but this deck can have plenty of lifegain to compensate for that. Also it triggers off of itself unlike the Haruspex so at worst it's another Phyrexian Rager.
  • Pitiless Plunderer - Provides decent ramp and triggers off of tokens which is a fantastic bonus. I keep considering adding Revel in Riches as an extra wincon because of this card.
  • Golgari Findbroker - Just added this recently so I'm experimenting with it as an extra Eternal Witness which helps because this deck has moved away from grave recursion effects but sometimes I still want things back. I absolutely love the art which was a big reason for the addition. I also like to have around 3 4CMC creatures to help Birthing Pod. Currently the deck has 5 including the Findbroker, but Kalitas, Traitor of Ghet and Pitiless Plunderer are two that you want to stick around and won't be podding away. So the Findbroker helps keep it at 3 after losing Disciple of Bolas and Vulturous Aven.
  • Krosan Grip - I kept talking myself out of this card because I already have spells and creatures that can destroy artifacts and enchantments, but it's still such a good card and the format has so many powerful enchantments and artifacts that it's never redundant. Added to that it also helps break up opposing combos.
  • Mausoleum Secrets - A solid tutor and instant speed is nice. It is grave dependant, but a lot of the time I just need two creatures in there to grab Bitterblossom.
  • Dusk Legion Zealot - It's a cheaper Phyrexian Rager so it's essentially an auto include in a deck that runs like this. Somehow I overlooked it so Rzepkanut deserves all the credit because I saw it in the excellent Mazirek Sac-Storm: The *Primer* of Life & Death build.

OUT:

  • Acidic Slime - A decent card, but ultimately too expensive given the alternatives. I'll miss the ability to chew up lands but I can instead rely on Woodfall Primus if there is a land that I'm desperate to get rid off.
  • Destructor Dragon - Saw this on Control_Train's Meren’s Thousand-Eyed Army [Primer] deck so I decided to try it out because this deck suffered from Torpor Orb. Ultimately though the card is too expensive and not as good in a non-reanimator build like that one.
  • Sylvan Ranger - Just not good enough.
  • Nissa, Voice of Zendikarfoil - Really was only using it as a cheap token generator, but it was too easy to get rid of.
  • Awakening Zone - Decent enough card that provides tokens and/or a bit of ramp. That said the fact that the tokens are colourless doesn't help Savra and the deck now contains better token generators and ramp cards.
  • Mimic Vat - I'm still on the fence about this cut. I really enjoy the card as it synergizes well with all the ETB creatures and isn't prohibitively expensive. I figured Panharmonicon is simply better, but I'm still considering putting the vat back in.
  • Liliana of the Veil - Good card, but the discard effect seems to run better if the deck is using more grave recursion, which it isn't. So she was cut.
  • Liliana, Heretical Healer  Flip - Similar story to the other Liliana.
  • Champion of Stray Souls - I love this card I really do. It can have such an explosive effect with all the ETB creatures this deck has. That said it's just too damn expensive.
  • Sprout Swarm - Was fun and interesting sometimes, but it could also just be totally dead and useless. Really it was just a way for me to add a few extra tokens at the end of my opponent's turn depending on how many untapped lands and creatures I had, but it never really did enough.
  • Kokusho, the Evening Star - Powerful card but unfortunately suffered the same fate as some others in that it's much better when running more grave recursion.
  • Deathreap Ritual - Decent card draw since it works at the end of the opponent's turn as well as on your own and this deck can generally make sure SOMETHING dies every turn. Even if it just means you're saccing a token in order to draw a card. That said there's sometimes where it's not doing anything and there's better card draw options in the deck like Midnight Reaper which is what I cut this card for. If I start playing more multiplayer I'll put it back in.
  • Fleshbag Marauder - Always disliked the card because I hated the art on both prints. On the face of it the card synergizes really well with the deck, but in actuality it's fairly meh. Plaguecrafter is just flat out better and this card can be dead late game as I'll already have an engine requiring the opponent to sac creatures and targeted removal would be better. Early game it's better, but even then the opponent can often have something somewhat useless to throw away.
  • Merciless Executioner - Exact same as Fleshbag Marauder.
  • Vulturous Aven - I had a surprisingly tough time cutting this card. I really like using cards that are good in a deck and don't really see play elsewhere. It acted as a more expensive cantrip creature that the deck likes and drew 2 cards. It also played well with Birthing Pod. In the end though when I was trying to trim the CMC in the deck there were good 3CMC and 2CMC options so the vulture lost out.
  • Disciple of Bolas - Very similar to the Vulture. Could be better than the vulture as it gained life and could draw more cards, but could also be worse. Given that this deck doesn't run quite enough powerful creatures ultimately the Disciple got cut.

Cards on the chopping block:

These are all cards I'm keeping on a list that I'm considering removing if something better comes along.

  • Hornet Queen - Good card. Creates tokens and is very strong defensively. Flying deathouchers can be really effective for protecting yourself. That said the deck has better token producers and at 7CMC it might be too expensie for what it does.
  • Gray Merchant of Asphodel - Good card, but better in grave recursion style decks - So it's on the block. That said I do like to have 3 5CMC creatures for Birthing Pod so I've kept it, but if something better comes along at 5 or if I experiment with running 2 I'll cut it.
  • Living Wish - A very recent addition that I'm testing, but it is playgroup dependant so we'll see how that goes and in the end it might not even be good enough. So I'm considering it on the block even though I just added it.

This is my first change log and large post. I want to start getting into the community here as I've been using this site as a great resource for awhile now. Currently I'm working on doing a massive write-up for the entire deck so look out for that!
