Savra, Sacrifice Queen Commander

Commander / EDH BG (Golgari) Casual Stax Zombie

This is a sacrifice-focused Commander deck in Golgari (Black and Green) colors. With Savra, Queen of the Golgari, you would like to sacrifice one or more black creatures per turn, and then gain life by any method to balance yourself out (or even move ahead of everyone else in life totals).

The deck is organizing into a number of sections:

  • Other is for all the cards that do not fit in with the following sections. They include things like targeted removal, ramp, card draw, tutors, or board wipes. Usually you'll want to tutor for a repeatable sacrifice engine, remove anything that is keeping you from utilizing Savra, and then board wipe when you can't get anything done to reset everyone else.
  • "Creatures in Graveyard" Abilities is the section where cards that provide benefits for having large, creature-filled graveyards go. Graveblade Marauder is good for when your graveyard is full of creatures you have sacrificed, whereas Sepulchral Primordial only uses your opponents' graveyards. The other cards use every graveyard, and can help swing in for a large amount of damage to knock out your opponents once you clear out their boards with Savra.
  • Sacrifice Outlets is the section that has all the cards that let you sacrifice a creature for any reason. Some only sacrifice themselves (like Yavimaya Elder), and others may sacrifice other creatures (like Nantuko Husk). Your best option in any case is usually Ashnod's Altar, as it provides mana and is an activated ability that can be triggered at any time. Carrion Feeder is a close second, but can die easily to "destroy" effects. You need to be able to use these to win, otherwise you'll get blown off the board because your board state falters.
  • Sacrifice Fodder is where you shall find the ammo for the previous section. These cards are meant to be sacrificed to trigger Savra's abilities. Some cards generate tokens (like Creakwood Liege), some can be brought back to the battlefield (like Reassembling Skeleton), and others have a benefit when they die or are sacrificed (like Viridian Emissary). If you can't get one of these out to feed into your Outlets, you'll have difficulty using Savra's ability at a regular pace.
  • Sacrifice Benefit is the section for cards that provide some kind of triggered ability whenever you sacrifice a creature. Reaper from the Abyss lets you destroy a problematic creature. Butcher of Malakir is like a second, free Savra trigger. Aetherworks Marvel gives you a free spell every six nontoken creatures your sacrifice (or lose to removal). Lumberknot will get too big to deal with and swing in for lethal damage when everything dies while it is in play.
  • Recursion is included to help you always have a way to sacrifice something or get back a key piece of your strategy if it is removed. Mikaeus, the Unhallowed is amazing when you have a board wipe destroy all your creatures, and helps you win if you have one in hand. Rise from the dark realms is usually how you end up winning. Everything else is single-target to get back something you lost that you really, really wanted to keep.
  • Land is self explanatory, although this deck is one of many I own. As such, all the lands are budget options and will probably not be upgraded for a long while. I enjoy keeping things casual (and some players at the store run Ruination, as an added reason to stick to mostly-basic lands).
