I recommend cutting Dragon Tyrant. It is very costly with a 10 cmc and 4 mana upkeep. I know it is a powerful card but by the time it can be casted it really won't have a huge impact in the game. I think that running a Dragon Broodmother would benefit your deck better. It costs 4 less to cast and instead of paying a 4 mana upkeep you get a dragon on every players turn.

I also think that you should be running a Dragon Arch. It let's you cheat in your multi-colored creatures for only 2 generic mana. Plus it is in flavor with your deck.

I don't think I've ever actually cast Dragon Tyrant (maybe once, I'm not sure). It's in the deck so I can activate Scion of the Ur-Dragon and win the game with flying, trampling, double-striking, fire-breathing Commander damage.

You're right about Dragon Arch, but I can't remember if I have one.

I'm looking forward to making my own EDH dragons deck, I've seen some cool ideas in this deck. In my own experience, in a 60 card mono red dragons deck, I've met alot of cool combos that demolished my enemys lifepoints. Here are a few cool cards you might want to add in your deck.

Anger of the Gods since most of your dagons are 3+ defence, this is a nice removal for those anoying 1/1s that help your enemys

Seething Song OP accelerator IMO

Sarkhan's Triumph Look for that one card you really want on the battlefield

Dragonmaster Outcast free tokens, here they come! try making this card hexproof, always help

Berserkers' Onslaught doublestrike for all attacking creatures!

Dragon Tempest combine this with Scourge of Valkas and pew pew away

Flameshadow Conjuring many card with certain effects are now copied, double the effect, double the danger with for example Utvara Hellkite

Purphoros, God of the Forge more pew pew

Koth of the Hammer cheap, strong 4/4s and my favorite is the -2 ability

Thunderbreak Regent where is he? such a nice addition!

Dragonlord's Servant pay less for more!

Dragonspeaker Shaman Same thing here

All of these cards run great in a mono red deck, dunno about in your deck. My experience is also to run a max of 3 colors to keep the game enjoyable, and not color dependant. Gimme your thoughts, I'm sure I can learn alot from any comment. I have an open mind :).

I like several of your suggestions, especially Dragonmaster Outcast, Dragon Tempest, and Thunderbreak Regent (all my Regents are currently living in a Standard deck). You're also right about Anger of the Gods-type effects, but I think this deck would find it easier to consistently cast Radiant Flames (also currently tied up in the Standard deck), so I'll go with that instead the next time I get a chance to sit down with this deck and make changes.

It's very rare that I have color problems, but I do have to manage my mulligans carefully to make sure my game gets off to a decent start. I learned a lot from playing a 5-color 60 card deck that I've had around for a long time.

add moltensteel dragon it will allow you to firebreath by paying 12 life then switching to skithrix and killing someone in one swing all you need is 4 mana to activate twice

Have you considered Wheel of Sun and Moon? It makes Scion pretty broken. It could replace Gurzigost. I have also found Karrthus to be dangerous because of all the clone effects in EDH.

Moltensteel dragon + Skithiryx combo doesn't work.According to Gatherer:9/25/2006 When Scion of the Ur-Dragon becomes a copy of another Dragon, it loses its copy ability for the rest of the turn.

Half of the combos that we think that work, don't work. Nuf said.

It works. You activate Scion's ability a second time in response to the first activation (i.e. before the first activation actually starts resolving).

They all work, talk to any judge that knows anything.

Thanks for that information, it cleared up some questions I've been having. Also, please excuse my ignorance of my previous comments. I have a habit of running my mouth, sorry.

so does that mean with say the skithiryx moltensteel combo that if u stack the activations and activate the firebreathing's in response to the 2nd activation it keeps the +'s considering the wording says "Moltensteel Dragon gets +1/+0 until end of turn"?

March 20, 2016 8:20 p.m.

Rhadamanthus says... #13

Yes, it works. After the next Scion activation turns it into a different dragon, the +X/+0 will still be applied on top of the new base P/T. That's just part of the way +X/-Y effects work. The fact that the dragon has a different name now doesn't matter.

Check out my take on Scion, it's not combo either, although there is one big combo in the deck...

I like Command Tower over Transguild Promenade here. In this deck they produce the same colors, but Tower doesn't enter tapped or require you to pay 1 or sac it.

Thanks, I've had in mind to replace Rupture Spire and Transguild Promenade for a while, but I also haven't played Commander in a while either. I don't know how long it's been since I last looked at this deck and I don't know whether or not it's truly up to date. I think I have a couple extra Command Towers laying around from some precons I took apart and never rebuilt. I'll try to remember to check up on that the next chance I get.

I also run a scion deck and I have to say that I really don't like the look of wheel of sun and moon. Once that card hits your field sure it does some derpy things for you but makes patriarchs bidding and living death (both of which should just end the game for you) pretty much into dead draws. I would personally prefer a tutor or seedborn muse so that if you have one of those kill cards you can sit by and dump all of your dragons into your grave on your opponent's end steps and then once your turn co.es around drop the bomb and say gg.

Would it be cool to know what kind of playstyle you run with this deck? is this a beatdown giants Scion?

July 22, 2016 1:38 a.m.

Rhadamanthus says... #20

There's 2 basic strategies:

  1. If I'm playing a 1-on-1 game, I first try to go for an early commander damage kill, because if it works, awesome! Usually I do one hit with Nicol Bolas to clear the way and then follow up with Dragon Tyrant. It can also be done in one shot with either Dragon Tyrant plus a lot of extra or getting Rafiq of the Many onto the battlefield and then pulling up something like Hellkite Overlord.
  2. If I'm playing a multiplayer game, or if my 1-on-1 opponent can stop me in step 1, then I go with the giant dragon beatdown plan.

I run a lot more utility (to fetch in my Scion deck (Smokus), I'll just list them in case you like any of them. Belltoll Dragon (for hexproof), Dragon Mage (for card draw when you run out, also because I've got a lot of return to play cards), Dromar, the Banisher, Dromoka, the Eternal, Hellkite Tyrant, Oros, the Avenger, Quicksilver Dragon (basically hexproof with an added bonus), Savage Ventmaw (for instant mana generation and the possibility of then returning it to play), Scourge of the Throne (conditional but can be powerful), Treva, the Renewer (I play for longer games so this good for me).

I also have some return to play cards and other stuff that I like. Animate Dead (2 mana for any Dragon basically), Call to the Kindred (good on Scion with my hexproof fetching), Frontier Siege (get to choose more mana or removal), Gravitational Shift, Urza's Incubator, Belbe's Portal, Door of Destinies (again good for longer games), Vessel of Endless Rest (5 colour source and also you can put a Nicol Bolas or Tyrant back into your library), Crux of Fate.

There are some cards I don't have but they are pretty great. Semblance Anvil, Lurking Predators, Wild Pair, Heartless Summoning, Descendants' Path.

Some of the cards you mention (Dromoka, the Eternal, Oros, the Avenger, a couple others) are things I've tried before that either weren't exciting enough or didn't turn out to be as powerful as they looked, but I really like some of your other suggestions. Quicksilver Dragon and Frontier Siege especially will be very good additions to this deck. I don't get to play Magic as often as I used to so it might be a while before the next time I sit down with this deck and mess with it, but when I do I'll definitely have your suggestions in mind. Thanks for the comment!

Why not try adding Vial Smasher the Fierce? When you cast your huge, expensive dragons, why not hit them with a vial of dragon fire as well?

December 22, 2016 5:39 p.m.

Rhadamanthus says... #24

Yeah, that's a worthwhile thought. I still need a few more early-game things to do and setting up with Vial Smasher seems like a good idea.

December 23, 2016 11:43 a.m.

Also, what about Descent of Dragons? Kill all of the enemy's creatures, they're all dragons, play Karrthus, Tyrant of Jund and then attack!(also, just subscribed! Amazing content!)
