That's a cool interaction, but except for that specific combo, Descent of the Dragons either does nothing or makes things worse for me. I think I'll leave it out for now.

I recommend Reito Lantern or Wheel of Sun and Moon over Gurzigost. While Wheel is a non-bo with graveyard shenanigans it creates the yo-yo effect for all dragons that some scion decks impart with Ulamog, the Infinite Gyre+Conspiracy. Likely Wheel will get blown up and you can switch back to a graveyard strategy, if not, well it allows rapid recurring of your point and click fire breathers.

I would also cut Vial Smasher and Scourge of Kher Ridges for Moltensteel Dragonand Dragonlord Dromoka. It's a lethal one-two punch at full/near full life: 1). Activate Scion twice; let the first activation resolve, hold priority and grab Moltensteel paying Up to 32 life and or some extra red mana boosting Scion to 21 power. 2). Let the Second activation resolve, grab Dromoka. Bam, potential lethal damage with lifelink to regain what you paid even if Scion is blocked.

I noticed someone mentioning Moltensteel+Skithyrix not working. Note to my Moltensteel+Dromoka example: It requires 2 Activations simultaneously. And I see I worded my example slightly wrong in that it would be the second activation that would resolve first to grab Moltensteel.

Oops I didn't notice Dromoka was already in your list. Still in all ties I've played Scion or seen him played Scourge of Kher Ridges has underperformed. The only place I've actually seen it work is a member of my playgroup's Xenagos, God of Revels deck. It's such a mana intensive card.

I understand how the various Moltensteel Dragon + (something) combos work. I'm the one who explained it earlier to the people who didn't think they worked. ;)

:O Oh, I am very sorry about the spam then! I stand by the recommendation of Wheel of Sun and Moon

What about Burgeoning? That card allows very fast mana ramp in multi player games

I'll think about it. Even though it's almost blank past turn 1, the power it represents on turn 1 might make up for that.

I really like this one! =) If you aren't too dependent on Indestructability of Darksteel Ingot, I'd play Cultivator's Caravan instead just because you can turn it into a creature if you need to. =)

Also, what do you think about Dragonspeaker Shaman and Zirilan of the Claw (with a sac outlet)?

I like the Caravan very much in and of itself, but I don't think it would work out in this particular deck. Pretty much every creature who could drive it is already better than a 5/5 on the ground.

Yes, the Shaman could be good (I really need a solid replacement for Crucible of Fire), and Zirilan would be interesting as well. I'm not too concerned with coming up with a sac outlet to prevent the exile. I think the way he can pretend to be an extra Scion in combat would be helpful enough.

Wait, once scion of the ur dragon becomes a copy of a dragon, it loses the ability to change dragons. Then that means you can't tutor up Skithiryx, the Blight Dragon in response to the Moltensteel Dragon ability.

Rhadamanthus says... #15

This was explained earlier. You activate Scion's ability a second time in response to the first activation (i.e. before the first activation actually starts resolving).

Did not read all the comments so I may or may not be repeating people. When you change scion, you change his name too. So when you change it into Dragon Tyrant of whatever it wont do commander damage. but, this allows you to make copies of x creature and totally do some crazy shit. personally I would make some more changes but hey to each their own.

A solid replacement for crucible of fire is dragon tempest. that card with utvara, feldon, scourge of valkas... is KING

The "Commander-ness" of a card doesn't have anything to do with its name. Once a card is chosen as the Commander for a deck, it's always a Commander, no matter what else happens in the game.

903.3. Each deck has a legendary creature card designated as its commander. This designation is not a characteristic of the object represented by the card; rather, it is an attribute of the card itself. The card retains this designation even when it changes zones.

Hey, what about Planar Bridge as it just allows tour to grab dragons ALL DAY

I noticed that you don't run with Moltensteel Dragon and it is in your side board. I used to run Scion but I got bored and molten steel can be absolutely devastating. Just an exampleLet's say you attack with scion and he's flying so your opponent couldn't block. Before damage is assigned use scion's ability and turn him into moltensteel dragon. Use molten's ability by paying 12 life to get +6/+0 until end of turn. Then once more use scion's ability and have it become skithiryx and even though it transformed you still have the counters and now you just hit them for 10 infect

DRAGONLORDkolghan2 planar bridge is nice and all but it actually counter acts the deck. You get dragon synergy but once they are on the field scion can't transform into them as needed

Yes, I'm aware of the Moltensteel-Skithyrix interaction. I've even had to explain it multiple times in the comments here to people who didn't understand how it works. ;)

The main reason I don't play Moltensteel Dragon is because I think it's too cheesy, but maybe I should have it in here just in case. I haven't played Commander in several months, and it's been even longer since I last shuffled up this deck, so I haven't put much thought into it recently.

Hey ever think of maybe running Door of Destinies or Coat of arms?

April 18, 2017 7:21 a.m.

Rhadamanthus says... #25

No, they don't really do anything. Dragons are big enough that they don't need help from anthem effects. To be honest, I don't even like Crucible of Fire in here. The only reason it's still on this list is because I haven't sat down and thought about the deck in a very long time.
