Before we begin, YES, I DO REALIZE IT IS NOT LEGAL TO HAVE A PLANESWALKER AS YOUR COMMANDER. I ALSO KNOW ABOUT OATHBREAKER, I JUST WANTED TO DO EDH INSTEAD.

That said, EDH is a casual format that encourages rule-bending and me and my friends were building Planeswalker Commander decks a few years back! I was originally either hoping to do Narset Transcendent or Tezzeret, Agent of Bolas. Yet when I saw the Nissa spoiled back when Amonkhet was dropping, I knew I had found my true love.

Over the years I've had her, she's really wormed her way into my heart and I adore breaking her out whenever I'm in the mood to have an insanely flashy game. Yeah, the word 'flashy' really defines this deck, because you can do some truly awesome things and get some crazy interactions you don't see every day.

How We Play Show

Nissa cares about two things: what's on top of the deck and setting up the top for other cards (her ultimate is, quite frankly, irrelevant). To synergize with this, we run cards that give us information about the top of the deck and benefit from Nissa setting it up. Oracle of Mul Daya and Vizier of the Menagerie are both awesome cards that help us ramp and have 'card advantage' respectively and both, surprise surprise, give you info about the top of your deck. Sensei's Divining Top is especially good in this deck as Nissa can churn through what we don't want or we can pair it with her zero to selectively set up our draws as well as what she cheats out. All these good cards people play anyways just get that much more powerful when we have an active Nissa who can play both support and be the star of the show.

What's on Top? Show

Here's where I list the cards I use to manipulate what's on top of my library and the ones that care about what's on top. After all, the top card of our library is what our deck's all about.

Abundance: Now it may not directly seem like a payoff card, but it is. When we draw, we're not only able to fix what we draw, but select what type of card we want. With cards such as Top, Scroll Rack, and Brainstorm we're effectively able to churn whatever we DON'T want to the bottom of the deck. With Sylvan Library and Jace, the Mind Sculptor though, this just straight-up wins the game over time. You will literally BURY your opponents in advantage.

Brainstorm- A good card that's even better in this deck. Those cards you drew you'd rather cheat out? Put 'em up top. At worst you can just scry two cards you don't want to the bottom of your deck.

Coiling Oracle- Card draw and ramp are what blue and green do best, respectively. This card does either or depending on what you have on top of your deck. Set yourself up with a land on top with Nissa or Top, and you can guarantee it'll come down with an untapped land.

Courser of Kruphix- An early body that reveals the top, gets lands out of the way, and gains us some incremental life. What's there to complain about? Courser's just a fantastic piece and more than welcome here, especially since she very nicely guards a turn 4 Nissa and helps us know when to pop her 0.

Djinn of Wishes- Now this is what I call payoff. Cheating in the top card of your library for 2UU is pretty good, especially when I'm able to manipulate what's there so easily. Also, there aren't any restrictions here. You can play lands, creature spells, and non-creature spells.

Future Sight/Magus of the Future- These cards are amazing to begin with, but in this deck full of ways to manipulate the top and get lands out of the way, they're insane. There have been games where I've never really needed to use cards out of my hand because of the synergies between other cards and these.

Garruk's Horde- A worse Vizier/Future Sight, but decent nonetheless. Gives me a solid body to cheat in/block with and helps the deck out more than he hinders it. That said, I would like to replace him with more pay-off in the future. If anyone's got suggestions, let me know.

Jace, the Mind Sculptor: Jace here isn't anywhere near as powerful in EDH as he is in 1v1. In this very specific deck, however, he can be back-breaking after he gets off his 0 once, if you can still protect him for another go at it, he puts the game completely out of reach. Glad I got him when I did for a nice deal, my wallet shivers looking at his price now.

Lurking Predators- Not only does this provide us great payoff by constantly cheating in our top creature (we can manipulate what's there too!), but we are also able to get a sort of scry effect whenever we whiff. This card was always screaming to be put in here.

Momir Vig, Simic Visionary- Now typically what you'd do is tutor creatures to your hand whenever you cast matching spells, but with an active Nissa you can reveal the top of your deck, maybe put it in your hand, then set up something for her to cheat out. Let's be honest, who actually wants to pay mana for a Craterhoof Behemoth or an Avenger of Zendikar?

Oracle of Mul Daya- Now this is a strong card. Combined with Nissa, we can make sure we'll never have a land on top of our library ever again. Alright... now Wizards... get off your ass and reprint this card dammit.

Ponder- Oh look, another great card that's even better due to the nature of this deck.

Rashmi, Eternities Crafter- A strong payoff card made even better. Many of the cards in the deck can set up what she cheaps out, she's kind of like our commander in that regard. That said, due to Nissa's modular cost we can pour just enough mana into her to cheat out the top. Also works in Nissa's stead as the Commander is some people aren't cool with a Planeswalker sitting in your Command Zone.

Scroll Rack: This card is nutso in here, competing with Sensei's Divining Top for the most powerful card in the deck. Anything you want out of your hand can be put on top of your deck at instant speed while simultaneously digging. Now it may be tempting to do the good ole fashion Scroll Rack play and spin it for your whole hand, but in this deck it requires more finesse. Now if it is in your best interest to do that, be prepared to do some head scratching because you'll have to think multiple turns ahead. Also, reprint this too Wizards. Just... LOOK at that price tag.

Sensei's Divining Top- The most powerful card in the deck. Next.

Sylvan Library: This is both card draw and a way to control the top of your deck, often you don't have to pay any life for this card to break everyone's backs, but that isn't to say that option isn't any less viable.

Vizier of the Menagerie- Not only do we get information on the top of our deck, our opponents don't get it and we get to fix our mana. Well... at least for creature spells. Oh yeah, and we get to cast our top creatures, so there's that.

Combos Show

Just listing some cute ones and key ones here, this deck has a lot of interaction so listing them all would make this far too long.

Deadeye Navigator + Peregrine Drake - A classic infinite mana combo. With this out you can do literally anything, with so many cards that interact with the top card of the deck you can cast your entire library for a win with Craterhoof.

Peregrine Drake + Deadeye Navigator + Sensei's Divining Top + Future Sight: I've only ever had this happen a couple of times, but the end result was me casting just about every single card in my deck. There are more reliable ways to do that, but this is so adorable I had to put it in here.

Sensei's Divining Top + Any card that cares about what's on top: If you thought Top was a good card before, you haven't seen anything yet. The mana efficiency here is what's key, it being able to protect itself is pure gravy.

Future Sight + Sensei's Divining Top /Magus of the Future: "1: draw a card". I mean... I'll take it.

Maybeboard Inclusions Show

Cream of the Crop: Every time I have a creature enter the battlefield, I get to play around with the top of my deck, creating powerful synergies. However I'm only allowed to keep one card on top of the deck instead of perfectly sculpting it to suit my needs. Still warrants deep consideration.

Fabricate: I don't run a whole lot of relevant targets, but Top is the best card in the deck and Scroll Rack is the second, so the ones that exist are super relevant.

Master Biomancer: We run a very heavy creature base and, while he doesn't do anything with the top, he can make our creatures quite large so we can simple overwhelm the table.

Mystical Tutor: This card with Temporal Mastery is very stupid.

Reason / Believe: Reason is not quite Ponder or Brainstorm, but would be run for the same reason we run Augury Owl. Believe is another use of our Commander's zero and can even be used when she is innactive. I like the value you can get out of the card...

Tomorrow, Azami's Familiar: Turning all our draws into Anticipate is silly, and I like some of the interactions she has with other cards (looking at you, Sylvan Library). He also has great synergies with drawing cards in general, especially with Arcanis and Overbeing, but is kind of a nonbo with Temporal Mastery and sometimes I REALLY don't wanna put cards on the bottom of my library...

Now this deck requires you to think hard and to think often and, to play quickly, you'll need to either master the deck or have absurdly fast thinking speed.

But you're playing blue anyways and thinking is fun; this is one of those decks that's guaranteed to make you a better player! It's insanely fun to build and play, but you're brain's probably going to hurt and your playgroup will probably yell at you to hurry it up.

That said, the deck is still a lot of fun to pilot and I couldn't reccomend it higher!
