Scry Me A River - Eligeth & Siani Scry Tribal

Commander / EDH Counterspell Flying Mono-Blue Scry

(Also known as You're Gonna Scry, Scry, Scry, Don't Scry For Me Argentina, The Boy Who Scried Wolf, and so on.)

Do you miss playing Ancestral Recall? Well then you've come to the right place! Eligeth, Crossroads Augur makes you draw more cards than you can hold in one hand, making every scry a draw instead. Siani, Eye of the Storm is the obvious blue partner for our prize sphinx, triggering draws whenever she and your flyers attack. The rest of the deck is focused on drawing as many cards as possible in order to assemble our wincons as soon as possible.

NOTABLE INCLUSIONS

  • Preordain, Faerie Seer and Mystic Speculation are one mana spells that are absolutely key. The idea is that you want to cast Eligeth and then one of these, to immediately get some value out of your commander.

  • Sphinx of the Second Sun is mana intensive, but has won me plenty of games. It's almost like an extra turns spell on a big beater. It grants your creatures a form of vigilance, allows you to cast spells on your turn AND keep mana up for counters, etc. etc. Truly amazing!

  • Midnight Clock is great in multiplayer, just be sure to dump your hand before it strikes the twelfth hour! I have included it as a way to get some key cards from your graveyard into your deck again.

  • Sword of War and Peace is our one source of lifegain. In my experience you'll be targeted by other players NON STOP once your card draw engine is underway, which is why we're also running Propaganda and Crawlspace. It also protects against Crypting yourself to death, especially with Sphinx of the Second Sun's double upkeep trigger...

  • Kefnet's Monument reduces the cost of your expensive sphinxes, which is VERY welcome, but it can also tap down a key creature like a Voltron commander or a big mana dork or a blocker.

NOTABLE OMISSIONS

It is only after some years of playing Commander with big dumb uninteractive decks that I have arrived at mono blue, so I haven't got some of the best counterspells in my collection, like Pact of Negation or Mana Drain. However, Force of Will and Fierce Guardianship are pretty good!

I also haven't found that much of a use for Swiftfoot Boots and Lightning Greaves. Crazy, I know! I have a bunch of counters for my opponents' targeted removal, and it's not often I want to attack with Eligeth the turn he comes down.

Finally, the land count is definitely low. My reasoning is that I can scry, then draw, into enough lands in order never to miss a land drop. I've been mana screwed exactly once in all my games, which can happen with 40 land decks just the same.

I am definitely open to any suggestions in order to further improve the deck, so have at it!
