In order to make my explanation of this deck as easy as possible, get familiar with
Seance
. People still don't quite get it, and now with the dope cards coming in Return to Ravnica,
Seance
is more potent than ever before.
First, I'll describe how good
Seance
. The card is absolutely unreal. With minimal amount of ramp,
Seance
pops into play turn three which makes it perfect for the RIDICULOUS weenies that get bigger and bigger.
Seance
in a nut shell allows you to return a creature from the graveyard to the battlefield at the beginning of each upkeep. The best part about it is that you can do it on the beginning of your upkeep and the beginning of their upkeep. The effectively gives a creature in your graveyard flash as well as the ability to cast it for free. I fail to find a downside of this, so long as you take the time to carefully plan which creatures to bring into play in the right circumstances. For instance, if someone miracles at the end of your turn and puts eight 4/4 flying angels into play, you pass your turn and recur a Thundermaw Hellkite, I can't accurately describe how many times I have used Thundermaw Hellkite to defensively win games by casting it, swinging for 5, killing any spirits they have with Lingering Souls, sacrificing the Thundermaw Hellkite and have it come back into play on either my next turn (coupled with another) because the one coming out of the graveyard is free. IT'S UNREAL!
Secondly the focus of the deck is going to be around
Lotleth Troll
, which I can safely assume will be the focus of a lot of new decks post rotation. My deck however will be entirely different for the most part because of just how well my discard-pump strategy from
Lotleth Troll
. While everyone I have spoken to is trying to discard stuff to Scavenge and get more +1/+1 counters with Corpsejack Menace, I will be ditching creatures that will heavily impact how each turn plays out. For instance, I REALLY like
Angel of Serenity
because not only can I discard creatures including the angel itself to the
Lotleth Troll
, I can exile
Angel of Serenity
with
Seance
to exile any potential threats you have on the board, and any creatures I discarded with the angel the turn before, get them all back into my hand, and discard them again. Its INFINITELY better!
Lastly, the two most popular mechanics which I came across during the pre-release were Detain and Populate which are extremely powerful in their own rights.
Seance
paired with any spell or creature which can Populate has the ability to be mindblowing. Most people I encounter playing, don't fully grasp
Seance
, so all they care about is the fact that the token goes away at the end of turn and to kindly remove it from the battlefield when I end my turn. HELLOOOOOO, any creature I exile from my library enters the battlefield as a token copy and is a spirit in addition to its other types. Wait, come again? you say its a token? Hold on, what can you do with tokens in this format? P-P-P-POPULATE!! Populate can be sort of slow, depending on the engine you use, but most Populate mechanics work at instant speed or as an activated ability. So ditching an
Armada Wurm
to pump my
Lotleth Troll
then recurring
Armada Wurm
on my turn or yours, and Populate the token thats a copy of
Armada Wurm
giving me a second
Armada Wurm
and a total of 4 5/5 tramplers, one of which goes away at the end of turn. Did I mention I can do that for two mana with Druid's Deliverance?
I'm still in the planning stages, but this is most likely what my deck is going to look like. Advice, suggestions and questions welcome! Thanks for looking.
