cEDH Kroxa:

Kroxa adds a unique flavor to the world of Rakdos cEDH in that he is both an outlet in the command zone and does not require activated abilities to win. On top of this, outside of the typical WGD combo, Kroxa requires no other win cons or "dead" cards. With this in mind, we can play more staxy cards like Cursed Totem where other Rakdos decks could not. Finally, in today's meta, most win cons require a state of having 2 specific cards in hand. It may be Flash + Hulk, Scepter + Reversal, or Oracle + Consult, but the requirements are the same. The idea of discard control is to attack the hand state of the game. Kroxa's win condition will require only one card in hand (Animate Dead) and one card in the graveyard (Worldgorger Dragon), allowing the pilot to continue the game unhindered if hands are attacked or the game state is reduced to top-decking.

TESTING BOARD (YOUR COMMENTS HELP ME KNOW HOW GOOD THESE CARDS PERFORMED FOR YOU)

  • Tinybones, Trinket Thief A very popular card, so far, but my honest opinion is, as of right now, it's not the greatest piece for our list. The draw is not guarenteed and only really pops of if you've already resolved an established discard engine like Oppression or Chains of Mephisopholes. Too often I find myself being able to streamline into WGD wins and not really needing to sand-bag behind Tinybones for card advantage. On the bright side, it is another creature in a very creature-light deck, which could make the difference when you need creatures in yards to stop your WGD loops. The cut I regularly make for testing Tinybones is Leyline of the Void, which is already a meta-pick on its own.

I get a lot of flack for some of my card choices or lack of choices, so here are my thoughts on some of my picks.

  • The Tabernacle at Pendrell Vale This may fall under a meta pick for most, but for me and my very few creatures, I'd like to place as much pressure as possible on my opponents creatures without making it too much of a burden for me. Tabby does that nicely.

  • Chain of Smog and Chains of Mephistopheles + Wheels. There is a game-state that I like to reach in Kroxa and it's one that I think the deck shines in. It's when all players have empty hands due to discard. Once Worldgorger Dragon is in our graveyard, we need only one of three cards to win, and I'm perfectly fine top-decking for them or a tutor. Other decks like the infamous Sushi Hulk or typical Consult decks require two cards in hand to pull of their win. Either Flash + Hulk or Sushi + Consult. These two card in-hand combos are easy to set up, but once a hand has been completely disrupted, it can be devestating to the player as they rebuild.

  • Why aren't you on other win-cons? As of right now, I don't like any other win-cons available in Rakdos, they either require some pretty dead cards or some lengthy set up. With the release of Dockside Extortionist, we are very close to getting some better combos, but not quite yet.

  • But you really need a back-up win con! Alright. Fine. Animate Dead an opponents dead Thassa's Oracle and then cast Demonic Consultation. Tadaa. Everyone will be upset. Beat them in the face with a 6/6 Giant. Kroxa even trades into The Gitrog Monster. Take it or leave it.

What you Need:

Cast Animate Dead targeting Worldgorger Dragon. When Worldgorger Dragon enters the battlefield, all your permanents will be exiled, including Animate Dead. With Animate Dead no longer in play, you will be forced to sacrifice Worldgorger Dragon. When Worldgorger Dragon leaves play, your permanents will return to play (untapped) and you will have a chance to reanimate Worldgorger Dragon yet again and repeat this process. However, this time, you will hold priority when Worldgorger Dragon's ETB trigger is on the stack and tap all your now untapped mana sources. The loop now repeats itself but this time you are floating excess mana for each iteration of the loop. Once you feel you have built up an obnoxiously large sum of mana, you will need to stop chosing Worldgorger Dragon as your reanimation target for Animate Dead. Instead, select another creature in any graveyard. This stops the "WGD Loop". With your near limitless amounts of mana, you can now begin casting Kroxa, Titan of Death's Hunger. When Kroxa enters the battlefield, there will be two triggers: one that returns Kroxa to the command zone to be re-cast and one that will make your opponents discard a card. Once your opponents hands have been stripped, they will start losing life when they unable to discard cards. Continually re-casting Kroxa will be more than enough to end the game.

Kroxa is happy to feed on the lighty seared sausages.

Tips/Tricks

  • Replacing Animate Dead with Necromancy in this loop allows you to start the loop at instant speed if all the previous conditions are met with the addition that you have chosen, previously in the game, to 'Escape' Kroxa.
  • Sunscorched Desert and Shivan Gorge are also instant-speed outlets. For a Desert win, you do not need to be able to produce all colors of mana in an easy fasion. Gorge only requires the production of red mana so you can activate it during each iteration of the WGD loop.
  • The same instant speed win can be achieved with Emergence Zone and sorcery speed reanimation enchantments like Dance of the Dead.

Actively trying to find solutions to weird puzzles/lock downs players find themselves in. Will also use this to point out weaknesses in the deck and your combos. The more you know about your own weaknesses, the more you can protect them.

Disclaimer: Emergence Zone fixes so many of our problems. Don't expect good solutions or spice when being able to cast instant speed tutors to hand literally fixes 99% of our issues.

Updates Add

I refused to play any dead flash-hate pieces before the banning, so Flash getting the axe brings no new cards to our line-up. However, I'd like to point out the new boost of importance that Withering Boon gets as a way for our deck to interract with what will now be sorcery-speed wins via Thassa's Oracle.
