I like this deck, very well put together. +1! If you could find the time, please take a look at my Boros BBQ deck. It's extremely budget (I have it listed at what I would like to have, so I'm down half the deck, including all the Grim Lavamancer 's and Arid Mesa ) but any help it appreciated, should have the finished build by Christmas!

is there any advantage to staying just red black?

Not really. With all of the fixing now legal in the format, running an Oros burn deck is actually easily viable. White allows you Lightning Helix and Boros Charm while black allows you 4 more copies of Lightning Bolt in Bump in the Night

Yeah. Especially with the new fetches, and in a deck so fast, the extra lifegain from Lightning Helix helps counteract the damage from fetches and shocks. The speed you get from exact 1CMC 3DMG spells and 2CMC 4DMG is really worth it. And of course, all the fetches help out with our favorite buddy, Grim Lavamancer .

okay, so give me some goals here. how many turns should the deck win in?

I am really thinking about purchasing a set of bobs soon. given that, what should be my essential creature list? (goblin guide, grim lavamancer, bob) what else?

October 14, 2014 12:59 a.m.

Ideally, we want turn 4-5 win. However, things rarely go our way, and we must prepare for the worst. Bob is a great way to keep the steam coming to make sure you have enough power to do that final burn. However, he is quite dangerous to use, especially in a deck full of Shocks, Fetches, and City of Brasses. Keeping this in mind, you would probably want 4x Lightning Helix to try and counteract the heavy damage you are taking. Even that, maybe only 3 Bobs is safe, as 4 might just flat out kill you. For creatures, Hellspark Elemental is okay, but unessential since we splash black and white for charm and bump. Instead, move some Skullcracks and Searing Blazes to the sideboard to make room for Bob, and keep the creatures as is (or maybe even take out 1 lavamancer). Guide, Lavamancer, Bob, and Eidolon are a good mix of creatures, as we want mosty cheap, effective, and efficient burn.

Thanks! I am going to take your advise and build a deck from it. I would be very grateful if you would look at it latter.

Also creature base in a burn deck should be 4 Goblin Guide 4 Eidolon of the Great Revel and 2-3 Grim Lavamancer

With all the sorceries you want to run (the 12 in this list) Monastery Swiftspear is a good budget option for Goblin Guide . It allows more of a beatstick feel to the burn deck, but less versatility. Eidolon of the Great Revel is pushing for burn to be Tier 1 Legacy, so Eidolon is a must for this deck. No Bob, your goal is to either get 2 Eidolons on the field and laugh at your opponent or resolve 6 spells for 18 damage for the win, since everyone runs painful mana-bases in Modern.

T3 win is achievable but mythic rare. (Get the pun?!?) T4 is much more consistent and possible.

rock decks, that is decks that run Tarmogoyf , Liliana of the Veil , and Thoughtseize .

October 14, 2014 9:53 a.m.

Meh, Bobs are not that bad. They work as a beater and help you get steam, and have been used in top-level play before. However, they are really difficult to use, and somewhat luck-based. They belong much better in Jund (Liliana+Tarmo+Bob+Lightning Bolt+other OP stuff) or Junk (Liliana+Tarmo+Bob+Spirit Token Generator of some sort+other OP stuff)

Although Bob provides fuel, he initially slows down burn and is removal fodder. He'll more than likely die before you get his advantage.

Speaking of which, why is Young Pyromancer F so expensive? Where does it see play? I bought a foil at 4$ around the release of JOU and now I'm very happy. You guys seem like the ones to ask.

October 14, 2014 4:46 p.m.

The card is very powerful in Modern, Legacy and Vintage. It's played in decks that run upwards of twenty instants and sorceries, which means that you will be able to make multiple guys. It's extremely strong in a tempo shell, where every Remand or Vapor Snag or other tempo play you make also increases your clock, giving them even less time to resolve spells. Just play the card a little.

October 14, 2014 4:57 p.m.

You can use Young Pyromancer in Delver decks, where you play Delver of Secrets  Flip (a cheap threat) and maybe a couple of Pyromacers, then use the rest of your fuel to keep your creatures/threats alive. Usually, the spells you cast also cantrip into other spells. Each little spell you cast generates a token, and it can get out of hand quickly.

I have a play set and ran him in Standard for my Boros burn that did alright at FNM. I just wondered why his foil was outrageous, since I couldn't find him in any Modern burn decklists. But I see why he could be played in UR Delver with all the cantrips (like the Jeskai Ascendancy decks, but a different win-con) or how he could be abused by tempo. Thanks for the answers GlistenerAgent and Ancient_Sentinel

It's also the fact that lots of Legacy players (where the card is the most widely played) like foils. They really like foils.

@quesobueno123 Earlier someone suggested running Scalding Tarn over Bloodstained Mire as a trick and minor advantage. I know it wouldn't be as effective as psyching them into thinking they're playing Delver, but would running Wooded Foothills be a good idea? It's not much more than Bloodstained Mire and may give you an early-game advantage.

Pupp3tMast3r says... #22

Yeah, I know that. I figured someone somewhere was playing it, because I didn't think Pyromancer was top-notch EDH. But most tempo decks I have heard of are UB.

October 14, 2014 6:45 p.m.

Nah, UR's the place to be for tempo decks. Burn spells and Electrolyze , alongside the actual Pyromancer make it the best choice.

About the deck: It's got a serious lack of Monastery Swiftspear and Shard Volley . More 3-for-1s is always better IMO, especially when you're still playing Lightning Helix .

GlistenerAgent Is Monastery Swiftspear really very good? The dream play is Goblin Guide into Eidolon of the Great Revel which means swiftspear has done two damage in the time guide has done 4 if you replace the guide with swiftspear.

@GlistenerAgent - if you have the time, please look at my somewhat-budget Boros BBQ deck. I'll be changing it to Mardu Barbeque since this deck made splashing black look flawless. I'll be swapping out the Arid Mesas (which I've never had) for the fetches that I do have. Basically I need to acquire anything that hasn't been printed since M11,
