Wouldn't Bonfire of the Damned make a good sideboard option

No. Bonfire of the Damned is not viable in Modern Burn due to the fact that Modern burn wants 3 lands maximum. Once you get three lands, You have mana for days.

I'd advise cutting shocklands and City of Brass for fetches. You probably only need two of each, if that, and can afford to play another eight red fetchlands that make it easier to get basic Mountain to avoid damage in the mirror or wherever your life total matters more.

GlistenerAgent I would if it wasn't for budget reasons.

@quesobueno123 What is your budget situation? How often do you play, what format, how often do you win, what's the prize pool, do you play competitively, and are the people you trade with educated? becuase you should be able to easily get 2 copies of each of the reprinted R fetches in 2 weeks if you FNM and trade well.

Pupp3tMast3r I currently have 10 bucks in spending money. I have the deck accept for 3 mires and the searing blaze and swiftspears. I have been trying to trade for fetches and should have 3 in a few weeks.

@quesobueno123 I didn't mean to ask what your budget situation like that, sorry if you took it that way. But with this deck I'd think you'd have trade fodder and could pick up the missing pieces pretty easily.

But hey, you're doing better than what I am. I need 3 Blood Crypt 's, 3 Lavamancers, 2/3 of the sideboard, and all of the pre-RTR burn spells.

Fetches are really cheap now. Definitely worth getting here.

October 20, 2014 8:42 p.m.

At least cut shocks for Wooded Foothills when you can. That card's relatively cheap.

I would suggest Elixir of Immortality as a one of in the sideboard, for when you need your spells back, and Lightning Helix . I run both in my modern burn deck and they both do great.

metuhs Lightning Helix was in here until I realized it sucks.

You're very welcome.

How do you feel about Deflecting Palm ? Sure it may seem a little defensive in nature for a Burn deck, but I think it could be an effective sideboard option against large, single source blitz strategies--such as Aura Hexproof, G/x Infect combo, or even Tron..

Metroid_Hybrid I'm not a fan.

What about Helix sucks exactly, in your opinion? I think it's pretty hit-or-miss. Decks that have been topping with a white splash either run 4 or 0.

My second question: Grim Lavamancer. I see why this is useful, given that it's reusable and costs nothing in terms of hand size. But are there times when it's a bit too slow, or is dead late game?

I ask because I've been using mono-red for a while, and I'm pretty new to multicolored burn.

October 26, 2014 2:04 p.m.

Lightning Helix is Lightning Strike , except in the mirror. It's not a very good card, because your life total doesn't matter.

Grim Lavamancer is exceptionally good, as it gives you reach via a continuous source of damage even when you are reduced to topdecking. The deck should be playing at least 8-10 fetchlands to maximize it.

October 26, 2014 2:07 p.m.

Well, every deck should be running 8-10 fetches now. Except things like tron or affinity. But I think that's doubly true here. Also, I'm seeing a lot of builds drop either black or white for blue to abuse Treasure Cruise now.

What I've personally found with the helixes in the limited playtesting I've done... It can be slow. It can be cloggy at times. It certainly has its moments against aggressive decks, though.

October 26, 2014 2:13 p.m.

Treasure Cruise is extreme gas. I've seen decks cut the white for it, as well as play Destructive Revelry in the sideboard. It can be inconsistent, but it's an incredibly powerful card.

October 26, 2014 2:17 p.m.

I'm actually splashing 1 stomping ground for destructive revelry. I felt there's no reason not to. Compared to Smash to Smithereens 1 less burn is justified if you can hit leylines and slow down boggle.

Oh and Glistener, I tried out your spellskite idea mained in infect. I actually really like it.

Sorry to hijack the chat like this.

Pupp3tMast3r says... #21

Wear / Tear is way better than Destructive Revelry , correct? A G splash isn't necessarily better than a W splash.

October 26, 2014 8:43 p.m.

Dealing two damage is relevant, at least so I think. I'm not the most experienced with the deck.

October 26, 2014 8:57 p.m.

Pupp3tMast3r says... #23

Yes but the 1 cmc of Tear allows you to pitch burn in their face earlier. I'd rather push through their defenses earlier than hold back for 2 dmg T2 when I can easily hit them for 6 T2 with Tear.

Pupp3tMast3r says... #24

4 color burn is bound to be less consistent, either way.

October 26, 2014 9:04 p.m.

Eh, not really. You'd only play 1 green shock, which is still a mountain if nothing else. I like Destructive Revelry over Wear / Tear due to the fact that it's removal and burn on the same card. Hand size is pretty important in a deck like this, so you want to do as much per card spent as possible. I'm sure some are going to disagree. What enchantments are really going to be out turn 1 besides Leyline of Sanctity though? And turn 1 I would rather just drop a creature and swing while they're still wide open. When I was running mono-red I found that siding 4 Smash to Smithereens was highly effective against affinity, even legacy affinity within my college playgroup. Because you deal damage while killing things they need on board without real drawbacks to your hand.
