Shadrix - Dastardly Deeds (A Gift For Liam)

Commander / EDH* Aristocrats Counters Group Hug Tokens WB (Orzhov)

Hey Liam, if you are reading this then you have received your gift! I initially wanted to write up a full primer on this list but it's super late so we will see what happens. I owe so much of my personality, my interests, really the person I want to be, to the role you have played in my life. You are truly a ride or die; you have ridden the roller-coaster this whole time. I'm so sorry what happened to your cards, but our love for the game will only grow and strengthen through this trepidatious affair. Alright enough X's and O's.

Love you bro. Now lets get in to it.

Shadrix Silverquill is one of the 5 house dragons of Strixhaven (aka the Elder Dragon cycle). I chose this deck for you because it's Orzhov, it has an amazing full art, it drips of malicious politics and dubious deals, and finally because there are more than a few ways it can be built. Most lists seem to go heavily in to the go tall/wide theme. "Make tokens, buff them up" is all but written on the card, however the double strike and evasion can also become lethal with some maneuvering of said tokens along with a voltron package. Of course, because you are playing black/white and making tokens, so aristocrats is always something you think about. You could lean into the politics side of it, focusing on making friends and building a pillow fort. Or you could go more control based. You have the best removal package of any color pairing and stax pieces are plentiful. I will talk more about it in the BOTTOM TEXT tab, but the deck is currently set up to run Elenda, the Dusk Rose as a substitute commander in case you are playing 1v1. I think you will like that card quite a bit. ;)

The goal of this deck is to have a little of everything. It's not a super focused list but this way if you choose to upgrade it, the cards you are taking out will be usable in later Orzhov decks. I wanted something that would make every game different. A deck that impacts the board and wins in a variety of ways. I think this list does that.

Tokens & Counters & Such:

Alright, so I said in the prequel tab that this deck can be helmed by Elenda, the Dusk Rose, and I wasn't lying. In many ways, Shadrix is quite similar to Elenda. They both care about creating tokens. For this we run 4 "token on a stick" cards (ex. Grand Crescendo), as well as a creature package that can help fill the board and create utility (ex. Fain, the Broker). Both Shadrix and Elenda also have the option to go tall, and for this we have an, albeit light, voltron package (ex. Lightning Greaves).

The two commanders differ in what they want to do with the board that they create. Elenda is all about death triggers,so by playing the aristocrats game, she will grow big and strong. The deck has a few of the staples in there (ex. Viscera Seer, Zulaport Cutthroat), but the list would need more pieces to power up Elenda consistently. On the other hand Shadrix wants to play a long game, building up a massive board and buffing them up with counters (ex Cathars' Crusade). This is why the card Felidar Retreat is so good in this deck. Not only can you make a token every land drop, but once you have enough, it becomes a crusade effect, pumping up the whole board.

Having fun:

I knew I wanted to add cards that were true to who you are as a player, so I included Cruel Celebrant and Revival / Revenge. These cards represent your past decks and your personal take on the Orzhov color pairing. Cards like Loyal Warhound were chosen because they remind me of you, both in game play and in art.

Speaking of art, I knew I wanted to make a list that was visually special. Of course Elenda is amazing but I wanted to create a 99 that was both distinctive and beautiful. The showcase cards of this list are: Lion Sash, Michiko Konda, Truth Seeker, Sun Titan, Kaya, Geist Hunter, Cunning Rhetoric, and Felidar Retreat. With regards to the lands, it usually costs a pretty penny to bling those puppies out, but I was able to get a little special with the Karn's Bastion and the Marsh Flats. I hope you cherish both of these lands for years to come.

With regard to politics, I wanted cards that would spice up the game and encourage verbal interaction. Scheming Symmetry is super fun. A one mana tudor is op (ex. card:Vampiric Tudor, but this one forces you to choose an opponent to revel with you in your glorious search. However this plays out more often as a benefit than a curse. Before turn 4 or 5 you can make a friend by both agreeing to fetch a sol ring. Later on, you can agree with a player to both grab removal spells, or protection spells, or whatever you need. Its really a "Choose a friend" card and I really like that. Wishclaw Talisman can operate similarly. Since you are already sharing card draw, the cards Cut a Deal and Pendant of Prosperity seemed like a fun little addition. Tempt with Glory is like Cut a Deal but with +1/+1 counters so its a pretty no brainer there. Finally, Magister of Worth is a hard hitter that offers versatility and gets the table talking.

Closing Statements:

There is a lot of room for improvement in this list. I believe that the land count, card draw, ramp, and curve are all pretty good but the deck lacks focus. I would choose a few of the categories from the Meat n' Potatoes tab and focus on that. For example. The pillow-fort theme is really good, but doesn't have enough pieces here to full utilize the play style. The same can be said about voltron. I got you a good start on the land base, but the commander dual, the slow dual, and the fast dual as well as Mana Vault and Ashnod's Altar would all be great upgrades.

I look forward to seeing this deck ad the table. It has brought me great joy to make it.

I wish you only the best Liam. Love you.
