Sideboard

"Do you hear her whispering?"

Background

As a Magic: the Gathering player, Phyrexia has always whispered to me. From running Rot Wolf in the sideboard of my Standard Werewolf deck, to Inkmoth Nexus in Affinity as an alternate win-con, to the construction of Modern and then Legacy Infect... I've always been drawn to the allure of Phyrexia, especially New Phyrexia.

However, I've never played Infect in Commander, until now.

The list below is my Skithiryx, the Blight Dragon EDH deck. I've always loved Skithiryx as a card, and I have done since I opened my first copy as a new player. I also love the mini-story on the long since defunct New Phyrexia website. If you look at the MtG Fandom wiki, you'll find it there on Skithiryx's page. It's a good, short read, and it is where the deck's name is from. Anyway, enough about background. Onto the deck...

The Deck

Initially, I built the list as mono-Black Infect tribal, but found that a lot of the Infect creatures just don't do anything or threaten at all with their Glistening Oil-bloated mana costs. Why pay 5 mana for a 2/2 when it doesn't do much and then dies? We're looking to Compleat, and we keep only the strongest machines here. Sheoldred demands Perfection.

I then considered a pure Voltron build, which this deck can lean into, but I could do Voltron with any Commander that likes to swing for face. I wanted to be able to do more than just have Skithiryx arrive and swing for lethal.

Eventually, I settled on a mix of things. A deck that can throw down Skithiryx and swing for kill quickly, but a deck that can also put players on a slow burn and tick the Infect Counter up slowly to Compleation.

The deck can be played as a high-power deck, utilising the fast mana and tutors in the 99 to get exactly what I need for that quick, efficient kill. However, the deck can take it easy and has some odd cards that are thematic that are included - see Caress of Phyrexia as an example. I've also opted to include a removal package to get rid of singular threats, as well as Toxic Deluge and Damnation to cover off wide boards that get out of hand before I can Compleat them.

Improvements and Suggestions

The intention here is to build this out into a Primer of sorts, explaining each card choice and how it helps either mechanically or thematically. For now though, its a list as shown.

I'm looking to slowly foil or full-art the entire deck, and as such, the Sideboard contains all of my potential targets. A pricey but fun project!

Any advice, feedback, suggestions are welcome. But, I do have to ask...

Do you hear her whispering?
