About a year ago, I made a few decks to experiment with mechanical themes I hadn't explored much in the past. While the "big mana" deck was fun, my "coins" deck (which was a mashup of coin-flipping and treasure themes) and my wheels deck had shorter lifespans. This new deck tries to give red and green more representation in my preferred rotation and resuscitate some of these lesser used themes. Klothys or Jolene can serve as the commander and will push the deck slightly different directions, but overall the game plan is to:

  1. build up a board presence of mana sources other than land (e.g., treasures);
  2. wipe the board, including all lands; and
  3. swiftly rebuild off your treasures, Klothys's ability, and other effects included in the deck.

This deck was built with the 8x8 method, by which I create eight modules of eight cards. These modules are split into two groups of four modules.

Every EDH deck needs ramp, removal, card draw, and fun! These "standard" modules check these boxes, tailored to the needs of this deck.

  1. Ramp: This suite tries not to rely upon having a massive number of lands in play, as you very well could be wiping them off the board. These options hopefully leave you with some ways to cast your spells from a board with zero lands.
  2. Card Draw: While a couple of these options work with the themes of the deck (e.g., treasure), most of them are just general good stuff for decks in these colors. In particularly, I seem to have stocked up on green's creature tutors.
  3. Removal: This suite includes some generally useful spells but also wraps in the land destruction theme, often destroying other stuff along the way.
  4. Fun: These cards provide a mix of miscellaneous effects that work well with the deck's theme or commander. In this case, I'm including some fairly generic "good stuff" spells (e.g., Veil of Summer) alongside popular but narrow effects that work well in this deck (e.g., Blood Moon).

These modules support the various directions this deck can go in.

  • Treasure: Treasure tokens will be useful no matter what, if only for manafixing and ramp. When playing with Klothys as the commander and pushing the land destruction aspects of the deck, treasure can step in to help you rebuild your board presence once you've blown everything up. They're even better with Jolene as the commander, as she can specifically use them for her own ability.

  • Graveyard Stocking: The wheels and other effects here help stock the graveyard, which Klothys uses as a resource.
  • Lands from Graveyard: Even if you aren't using Klothys, you can put your graveyard to use with these cards, which help get your lands back from the graveyard or benefit from lands being in your graveyard.
  • +1/+1 Counters: Like treasure, these are generally helpful, but you'll have to get lucky for this module to really go off.
