Combos are delicate. Aggro is easily reined in. Control is flimsy. If you truly want to succeed in MTG, you need to be ready for anything and everything. And that means you have to be on the defensive.

Keep yourself safe and impossible to harm in the early game, and hide your creatures behind your fortress until they are ready to either chip away at your opponents or over-run them through sheer force.

That's all there is to it. It's not pretty, it lacks a grand master plan and petty legendaries. But if you want victory to be assured, you had better be ready to block whatever is thrown at you.
