Ayy -- My findings with playing Shirei for so long:

Shirei is a bad commander.

  • Shirei is slow

  • Shirei is vulnerable

  • Shirei needs to be built around

The earliest you can get Shirei out is t2 - t3 -- which means that she is out without protection and without board state. Moreover, the establishment and utilization of board state under Shirei requires an extremely vulnerable strategy. Graveyard recursion with a delayed trigger allows many opportunities for response, and many different ways to disrupt the general strategy.

So, what can you do to mitigate this effect?

For me, the answer was threefold:

  • Build a slow deck

  • Build a robust deck

  • Build a deck that can function without Shirei

At a certain point, you will need to have Shirei in play doing her thing, recurring small creatures and setting up broken synergies that amount to an insurmountable advantage in cards and life. But, in the intermediate time, you can also disrupt opponents strategies with multi-part combos, stax effects, and destruction effects.

So -- I don't fret about playing Shirei turn 5 - 6 -- and I try to get things like Reassembling Skeleton, Skullclamp, and Oblivion Stone into the mix as soon as possible. All the while, I use tutors to search for the protection and stax effects that will eventually put the game into my permanent favor. Of course, the deck often loses.

This is essentially the reason that I turned my deck from Voltron Fallen Ideal, Sword of Light and Shadow, Flesh-Eater Imp, etc -- into a more stax focussed deck: Sadistic Hypnotist, Smokestack, Mindslaver, Kormus Bell, etc. Crypt Rats is an interesting card that fits both versions.

If I were to immediately recommend cuts: Triskelion and Nim Deathmantle -- I would substitute the first for Perilous Myr or Pentavus or Triskelavus. The second, I would substitute for Dimir House Guard

I really like Aligned Hedron Network in this deck. How is it working for you?

I honestly haven't had a chance to test it out since I put it in :( I'm planning on playing it this week though so I'll report back with my findings. It seemed like a good fit.

I play Shirei built an izzet, rakdos and golgari 60 card deck around 4x copies of him and an EDH deck.

I would cut Doomed Necromancer , who lacks some recursion. Some one drops do the same thing but are 1/1s. Liliana's Shade is a bit unessesary as well. Pilgrim's Eye and Skittering Surveyor do the same thing which are also cheaper. Pentavus is not as good as some others such as Noosegraf Mob .

And you have too many lands, you only need most 34. I would recommend a Tragic Slip for removal, and a Bitter Ordeal for win-con
