Sideboard

Maybeboard

Creature (4)

Enchantment (2)

Something of a sequel to my Standard Deck back in the Days of INN/RTR, Shower Fungus V2.0.

This is meant to be a faster-side of midrange beater deck. It doesn't do anything too fancy it's mostly designed to play creatures and turn them sideways. Here's the overall idea for some key cards:

  • Accursed Witch  : A Kamikaze creature. Usually you want to have this creature to die so you can then curse you opponent, thus draining them each turn. If possible, attack with Grotesque Mutation to regain 7 Life and make it a more appealing target to kill. Yes you'll 2-for-1 yourself that round but with the upside of having your opponent suffer from the Curse.
  • Deathcap Cultivator: A good mana dork. But with the added benefit of having it be a good blocker in the late game.
  • Grim Flayer: The bread and butter of the deck. Just a solid attacker and a great way of ensuring consistently good draws.
  • Scrapheap Scrounger: A good beater with recursion but don't be afraid to put one in the graveyard to help the Delirium count.
  • Voldaren Pariah  : A trump card. It's a good way of getting rid of your opponents creatures and getting around Hexproof and Indestructible threats. While originally included to get around decks built around Ormendahl, Profane Prince  , the flip ability is always useful. Don't be shy about binning your entire board to activate Abolisher of Bloodlines   as they will be relatively cheap to replace and you also get a 6/5 flier out of the equation to boot!

  • Ob Nixilis Reignited: A good way to deal with a game that's being dragged out. the +1 ability is a great way to ensure you've always got an answer in your hand and the -8 puts a serious clock on your opponent (bonus points if you can also get your opponent with an Infectious Curse  ). While the -3 ability is a nice option, try avoid using it if at all possible as there's plenty of Murders to go around.

  • Clear Shot: Just a fantastic piece of removal, obviously better if you use it with Kalitas, Traitor of Ghet or in conjunction with Grotesque Mutation but perfectly usable by itself.
  • Hissing Quagmire: Great for ensuring that you have both colours available at the start but great for another attacker/blocker/Abolisher-chow. This deck doesn't have too many high-cost creatures so if the game's running long, don't hesitate to put the Quagmire to work.

  • The cards in the Sideboard are mostly chosen in case the card is a long grind of a match. While always situation-dependent, here's some of the rough-goals of the cards:
  • Aim High: Just a decent way of dealing with flier decks. While the mainboard's removal suite should be sufficient, this just for some extra redundancy.

  • Appetite for the Unnatural: A great way of dealing with Artifact/Vehicles decks.
  • Embodiment of Insight: Mostly there to deal with pillow-fort decks. Obviously, if you have these in your deck, you need to be conservative with your land-drops but it's good for breaking through your opponent's defenses.
  • Retreat to Kazandu: Mostly for dealing with aggro decks. You'll usually opt for the second option to keep your life total up until you can get your defenses up. Though, once you do, theres nothing wrong with giving +1/+1 counters to your team. Though, if you side this in, it's best you don't side Kalitas, Traitor of Ghet or Grotesque Mutation out.
  • Yahenni's Expertise: Put in place to deal with token decks. Was originally added to negate the Decoction Module/Panharmonicon/Whirler Virtuoso combo. But just a good wrath overall. It's best if you don't side Grim Flayer out for this as it's trigger can help you dig to the Expertise.
  • Yahenni, Undying Partisan: Apart from being a badass energy-vampire, Yahenni's a substitute for Kalitas, Traitor of Ghet (a vampire of the classic variety). Best used when 4 mana with a double is just too taxing a cost. Not only that, but the Indestructible is nice for dealing with your opponent's blockers.
  • Some extra notes for the deck:

    1. Never keep an opening hand with less than 3 mana. This deck has fewer land due to it's lower curve but probability isn't on your side when it comes to land draws which is poisonous to the necessary quick start of the deck.
    2. While this deck does tend towards the aggro side of the spectrum, do not just throw creatures into unfavourable situations. Each of these creatures have a fair amount of utility and thus to expend it all before getting a chance to maximise their abilities will put you in a very bad situation.
    3. While having Delirium is nice, do not pursue it as the main goal. Delirium is more of a opportunity to attempt while following the main goal of beating-down.
    4. This deck is yet to be tested in the GP circuit. I've won some casual games of Standard with this deck but I'm unsure of it's professional aptitude.
