WARNING: Reading this article may result in excessive game wins, exceptional gameplay, and some amount of Magic Megalomania. Readers are encouraged to not take my word for it and try the deck out for themselves.
Sidisi, Brood Tyrant is a sweet Magic card, and has a decently abusable ability. I mean, mill 3, maybe get a zombie? On paper it looks like a baby Grave Titan, though the Dredge-esque ability can also provide some value with delve cards, making Sidisi, Brood Tyrant look like a dream come true for any Sultai/BUG afficianado. I have been intrigued by the card ever since I first saw the spoilers for Khans of Tarkir, though I was not overly interested in playing the Sidisi Whip decks that it was most commonly played in, as most of my time and focus were invested in my Modern game. (I played Scapeshift and Twin at the time)
Now we have a new dynamic duo in the GBx world. Den Protector and her oh-so-hard to kill sidekick, Deathmist Raptor. Den Protector is a REAL Magic card. She blocks, she beats down, she attacks through tokens, and she provides card advantage. Her Regrowth ability makes her look similar to Eternal Witness, but her synergy with Deathmist Raptor makes her feel more like Bloodbraid Elf. (If it were Bloodbraid into
Sprouting Thrinax
every time.) Being able to have 8 possible castings of Thoughtseize in a deck is nothing to sneeze at, and she brings a whole lot more to the game. "Maternal Witness" is often the most powerful topdeck in the list, and I've never been sad to draw one!
Deathmist Raptor may not have a sweet nickname, (though I do like WOTC R&D's "Vengemorph". Here's looking at you Vengevine!) but he brings a significant amount of fight to the board. Deathtouch is one of the more annoying abilities to try to fight through, and throwing it onto an aggressively costed body makes for a decent creature. Throw in the fact that it's difficult to get rid of, and the value it provides with Sidisi, Brood Tyrant and Satyr Wayfinder, and you have the perfect 3-drop. Milling a Raptor with a morph in hand often feels better than drawing a card!
Another thing to note is the package of powerful 1-ofs this deck is able to play because of the 1Sidisi, Undead Vizier. Our suite of "silver bullets" includes
Treasure Cruise
,
Dragonlord Silumgar
, Hero's Downfall, and Torrent Elemental, with more out of the sideboard. Sidisi, Undead Vizier brings us up to 5 Sidisi's, hence "Sidisi Megamorphs" instead of "Sultai Megamorphs".
All in all, I've been very impressed with this deck's performance in both open and known meta-games, and the curve and lines of play have felt nothing short of exceptional! If you're into a different take on aggro, this deck is for you. Feedback is appreciated!
