Welcome to Grixis Dragon Control for the up-and-coming Frontier format! We hope you enjoy your stay!

This deck is for you if:

1. You love blue-based control

2. You wish you could play with Counterspell again.

3. You love dragons! (Who doesn't love dragons?)

4. You want to watch your opponent sigh in resignation as they are slowly beat down by a 3/7 hexproof monster that they can do nothing about.

5. You hate aggro and want to bring it down a notch.

6. All of the above!

This deck is not for you if:

1. You don't like control decks.

2. You hate being reactive.

3. You don't like dragons. (As if.)

4. You want to win fast, and have many threats on-board at one time.

Well, if you're still here, then let's get to the primer.

Why Grixis? Show

So, why are we playing Grixis over any other colour combination? Well, for starters, the removal suite offered by Grixis is vastly preferable to the other colours. Playing Red means we can easily deal with early threats thanks to our burn spells, such as Wild Slash and Lightning Strike, while the addition of Black gives us access to no-conditions-asked kill spells like Murder and Murderous Cut. Both of them also offer excellent sweepers, with Radiant Flames for those pesky elves, to Crux of Fate to kill major threats like Siege Rhino and Archangel Avacyn. Finally, blue gives us easy access to whatever card we need for any situation, thanks to nifty draw spells like Anticipate and Dig Through Time. Blue is also a big reason we're playing our dragons. As a control player, I love the feel of good old fashioned Counterspell, but I can never find a place it's legal. However, I can play Silumgar's Scorn all I want, and revealing the big bad himself is just too good to be true. Never underestimate functional Counterspell.

Strengths and Weaknesses Show

Strengths Show

Our best matchups by far are against aggro decks, where our large arsenal of cheap burn spells can efficiently one -for-one our opponent until we are able to land a threat. If they get out of hand, a simple Radiant Flames will be very effective at keeping the board clear of small threats, and our emergenc button, Crux of Fate, will save us in a pinch. We even have Foul-Tongue Invocation to mitigate damage while still interacting with our opponent's board. Our next best matchup would be midrange decks, because they are also creature-relient. In a nutshell, our deck is good against any creature-based strategies. If their goal is to beat us down, they are going to have one heck of a time trying.

Weaknesses Show

Our primary weakness is other control decks. We are very light on main-board countermagic, which makes it difficult to stop pesky spell or enchantment based decks. We have very few actual threats of which to apply pressure to the opponent, and if they are ready for us we could quickly find ourselves out of wincons. We are also incredibly ill-equipped against planeswalkers, so these are must counters that stretch our Silumgar's Scorns very thin. Essentially, Grixis is trying to one-for-one with our removal suite and make up the card advantage lategame. Anything that can successfully maintain steam and draw better than we can is going to be a problem.

The General Strategy Show

The primary goal of Grixis is to keep our opponent pinned down and constantly out of resources, while we finish them off with our non-interactive dragons. We want to punish our opponent for playing creatures, and get them to consistently spend more mana and cards then we are. Our life total is critical early-game. If you don't have a sweeper in hand, then you should be killing things as they appear. Optimally, the order of spells would be: Burn spell, burn spell, kill spell, dragon, repeat. We use Silumgar's Scorn to counter anything that threatens our dragons, or of course planeswalkers. We do NOT like planeswalkers. If our hand gets empty, then we Dig Through Time to keep the kills coming. This plan changes slightly depending on the type of strategy we're up against, which I'll go through now.

Aggro Show

These are the elves and goblins type lists that are currently running rampant in Frontier, and the easiest to deal with. All we have to do against decks like these is keep killing their threats! Don't let anything live for more than a turn for the first four turns of the game, if you can help it. We want to rout them as soon as Dragonly possible, and make darn sure they're out of steam. Keep them off of creatures, you keep them out of the game. Don't let Goblin Rabblemaster live until combat, and you should have no trouble in earning an overwhelming victory.

Midrange Show

Our midrange plan is similar to our aggro plan, in that we should still be killing all the things. The only difference is that we need to be more aggressive with our creatures. If we let them live long enough, they will kill us. Turn four Thunderbreak Regent surrounding turn three and five Murder is our best chance to win in this matchup. Siege Rhino is a jerk, don't let it attack. And if the opponent drops a Grim Flayer without delirium enabled, BURN THAT THING TO THE GROUND!

Control Show

Control is our worst matchup mainboard, for a very good reason. Our threats are few and far between, and so any deck that can reliably kill them through countermagic is going to be a problem. Control decks in this format also have a tendency to run non-creature wincons, which means bad news for us. Our deck is, once again, built to win against a creature-heavy meta. Planeswalkers and those Sphinx's Tutelage nightmares are terrible for us before sideboard.

Combo Show

Against most combo decks we have a fairly reasonable matchup game one, because we can use Silumgar's Scorn to counter the key peices of whatever engine they're using to try and take us down. Postboard this matchup becomes nigh-unwinnable for nonblue combo decks, as our wall of countermagic is generally just too strong for them to handle.

Sideboarding Show

Now that we've gone over how we do against the broad range of archetypes, it's time to talk specifics. The following is a guide on how to board against some of the most popular decks in Frontier at the time of this being written.
