"It's always a sagu mauler..." -some friend
So, back when Khans first came out, I quickly fell in love with the morph mechanic. I just love the idea of putting out all these 2/2s and make my opponent guess if they should waste removal on what could just be a 1/1 or a 6/6 trampler with hexproof. During that time, I had tons of fun with this standard simic (later temur) morph deck. Never went to FNM with it, but I seem to do well against my other friends with it, making one believing every single morph was a Sagu Mauler. Now I wanna see if I can still have the same amount of fun in modern, though, I am on a bit of a budget on this one.
Goal is simple: slam down 2/2s, activate trap cards, win. Your first 2 or 3 turns you are setting up, playing Obscuring AEther to play those morphs quicker and Training Grounds to help flipping them easier. Besides Deathmist Raptor, you are going to want to morph most of the creatures, as they have much more value to you flipped then played as normal creatures. Deathmist Raptor, Maelstorm Djinn, Hooded Hydra, and Sagu Mauler provides the beat down while Den Protector and Shaper Parasite provides utility. And for when we are not flipping dudes, we have Cryptic Command, Simic Charm, and Stubborn Denial to help protect our dudes. And if our morphs needs a little more power, we got Hadana's Climb, which works well with the megamorphs and Hooded Hydra; Trail of Mystery to help thin out our deck while also providing a boost for flipping our creatures; and Ruins of Oran-Rief to help both morphs and Hadana's Climb. Lastly, we got Garruk Wildspeaker, whose abilities are all relevant, but that +1 especially is great to keep mana up to react to our opponent or play more stuff. As for lands, besides Ruins of Oran-Rief, they are nothing special, if I could afford it, I would be adding in the fetches and shock lands, but oh well.
Sideboards are one of my weakest, I'm more of a casual player, so I don't use it too much. So I'm just trying to cover as much as I can with that.
This is more of a brainstorm, I haven't yet tested this out in a game. Any advice to further help it would be great. I was going to add Red as well to it, but felt there wasn't enough worthwhile red morphs for it, though maybe I should anyways for the burn spells. The deck feels pretty good in practice, but maybe a bit too slow, so I'll keep looking into other ways to speed it up, as not having Obscuring AEther in your opening hand kind of hurts. And any advice for the sideboard would be great. Thanks for checking this out!
