So I was messing around with my old Simicker deck with a friend and we stumbled across a (slow) infinite combo I didn't mean to put there. What does that mean for us? Completely focusing around this combo to the exclusion of all else of course! The old version may be more viable but this one will be much more fun for casual play if your group of friends likes not ending games for a while.
The Combo
Verazol, the Split Current + Murasa Sproutling + Into the Roil + Roost of Drakes + Vastwood Surge
This combo requires a LOT of mana but thankfully Simic has ways of doing just this, and the combo will feed back into itself to allow you to get more cycles done each turn. It's a slow combo and weak to several decks currently in the meta but this one's just for fun so we don't worry about that. To play the combo first cast Verazol at x=6, he will come out as an 8/8. Next, kick a Roost and copy with Verazol. Get as many roosts as you can, since the birds are the main beneficiaries of this combo. This is all the setup you need besides getting your mana sorted (which is taken care of in the decklist). Next, cast, kick and copy Vastwood Surge. The copy replaces the counters spent to make it while the rest of your board gets a free boost. At the same time you are also clearing your deck of its mana which gives you more consistent draws (since we would at this point be in the late game where that sort of thing can matter).
At this stage in the game you will most likely have already used at least one Into the Roil so there should be a copy in your graveyard, meaning when you cast and kick Murasa Sproutling you can copy it with Verazol to bring it alongside Vastwood Surge back to hand if you don't have another one or want to have it available. So long as you don't kick Roil when you use it to return the Sproutling to your hand to reset the combo you won't draw yourself out with the combo, and as long as you don't copy it when you do want extra draw your Verazol will get all the counters he needs to break even and keep the combo rolling for as long as you wish.
The Mana
This is one of the most expensive combos I've ever come across and it offers very little means of paying for itself in the process. This means that it's only as infinite as your mana reserves and the number of cards you have left to draw. This will turn some away but for those who stick with it it is possible to get the full iteration of the combo off at least 3 times per turn, giving you a pile of fliers, +6/+6 to all your creatures (besides Verazol and your Sproutling) and some bonus effects based on whatever else you happen to have out at the time. We achieve the required mountain of mana through early and midgame ramp:
- Lullmage's Familiar not only offers us mana but also gives free life whenever we kick anything (and we kick a LOT of things)
- Skyclave Relic is an absolute monstrosity of a card, for 6 mana with a Verazol already out you can get 6 free mana of any colours every turn! This is the most powerful way of exploding straight into the late game
- Throne of Makindi and Vine Gecko both serve much the same purpose: letting us kick our ramp spells a turn earlier to get the ball rolling
Generally I will find myself on about 24 mana available by turn 8, and with all the stall tools kicker brings it's easier than you may think to get there.
The Win Conditions
Besides just the combo itself there are a couple other ways we can win, kicking a Cragplate Baloth and copying with Verazol allows you to immediately swing for 20, and can be done by turn 5 or 6 depending on your draws. Of course there's also the Simicker fallback of spamming fliers with Roost of Drakes until you beat your opponent down from above. Into 3+ colour decks we also bring Myriad Construct which turns their own mana fixing against them and can be copied again by Verazol, then toppled with a kicked and copied Bubble Snare or Into the Roil before getting pumped into a wave of 5/5s with a kicked and copied Vastwood Surge. There are so many interactions in this deck that so long as you don't fully flood or screw you can usually at least get by until you get what you need.
This Deck is Stupid Why Would I Want to Play This Why Did You Make This
It's an infinite combo. In standard. 'Nuff said.
