A slight epiphany. —March 23, 2015

While eating breakfast this morning a thought occurred to me - I'd been undervaluing Scourge of Skola Vale because he's a 2/2 for 3 that requires me to sacrifice things and tap to get bigger; sure, he has trample and lets you potentially get utility from things about to die anyways, but I don't ordinarily want to sac anything of mine to him.

The realization I reached of course is one that "should" be pretty obvious - I'd be putting him into a deck with a commander who is "conditional Act of Treason" on a stick; the things I'd be sacrificing would be the opponents creatures, after I stole them. I felt silly afterwards, and Scourge has now made the list.

That's pretty awesome I didn't know there were that many different hydras. The only thing I could suggest would be like Llanowar Elves and his spin offs. Seems like it could be pretty fun I may consider trying to do my own take of it too since TL is starting to get a foothold at my LGS.

There are actually 4 more that are legal in the format, 3 mono-red hydras (Balduvian Hydra, Molten Hydra, and Rock Hydra), and 1 green one Scourge of Skola Vale. The 3 red ones don't work all that well in a primarily green deck though and Scourge is more a build around card for decks with graveyard recursion, which this is not.

If you do wind up building something similar, I can tell you that it is immensely satisfying resolving enormous stompy dudes when your opponents are fielding things that are legitimately tiny.
