Slaughterhouse - 'Slaughterhouse Nine' Flavorbuild

Commander / EDH* UBR (Grixis)

Zoanzon

A flavor-build to try and depict Worm's Slaughterhouse Nine best as able.

The deck uses a high amount of zombies to nod to Bonesaw's minion-making, and the Dreadhorde cards are to more nod to the Slaughterhouse Nine-Thousand arc and Bonesaw dipping into cloning (as well as where the magic happened, so to speak). In that vein, a lot of the War of the Spark cards worked well to depict the general look and feel of the Nine hitting a city, terror and all. A slight subtheme exists of parasitic-themed cards, such as the Eldrazi Scion cards or Skin Invasion  , and this is partially a nod to the former member Breed, lost but very much not forgotten by anyone.

Now, for which legend stands in for which member.

  • Thraximundar as SPIRIT OF THE NINE: Does not actually represent a member per-se (though if I was including stand-ins for the former members he'd potentially be Chuckles). No, Thraximundar represents the spirit of the Nine itself: where he goes, the earth is painted red. (For those who haven't read Worm: not a real thing in-story, just a good stand-in for commander without needing to figure out which Grixis legend worked best for Jack.)
  • Tetsuko Umezawa, Fugitive as JACK SLASH: Originally I went with Toshiro Umezawa, but u/Fenhrir on reddit recommended Tetsuko as her ability nods more to Jack's knife-skills hitting where you don't expect and ability to know his enemy's weaknesses. TBH this ability probably won't do that much work in the deck considering the size of the creatures involved, but that rare moment where it actually does something will be all the sweeter and the more unexpected, right?
  • Gisa, Glorious Resurrector as BONESAW: Look at that demeanor! Who else is having the time of their life playing with dead things? Maybe some characters, but none that work as well for Bonesaw: have fun making your opponents' creatures regret dying in a way that didn't annihilate their corpse!
  • Ulamog, the Infinite Gyre as THE SIBERIAN: The ETB destruction ability works well for how Siberian can break anything to point of being the one thing to make Alexandria bleed, the indestructibility nods to Siberian being essentially inviolable, and the nature of the Eldrazi nods to Siberian's nature.
  • Tuktuk the Explorer as MANNEQUIN: A bit more comedic a choice than I'd have preferred, but 'dies fleshy, comes back an artifact' works well enough for these purposes.
  • Ludevic, Necrogenius   as CRAWLER: The flip ability isn't perfect for Crawler's regenerative adaptability, but it's the best choice in Grixis colors.
  • Hythonia the Cruel as SHATTERBIRD: Her scream can decimate cities and flay all in range of the glass: what better a fit than Hythonia's monstrosity ability?
  • Ashling the Pilgrim as BURNSCAR: Ashling's ability works well to mimic Burnscar's 'setting everything on fire', and the narrative point of Ashling becoming Ashling, the Extinguisher works for how Burnscar's power messes with her mind the more she uses it.
  • Kiku, Night's Flower as CHERISH: As Cherish can tug on people's emotions to the point of driving them into rages or endless despair, so too can Kiku make a creature turn on itself. (Also, have fun with the goad cards in the deck.)
  • AND Grimgrin, Corpse-Born as guest star HATCHET FACE: Technically the undead Hack-Job by the time we see him, Hatchet Face's undead corpse was another of Bonesaw's toys for a brief period, and Grimgrin's nature nods well to that.

There's definitely some weaker points in the card choices - be it mechanically or flavorfully - but I hope this gives people a fun place to jump off from!
