JWiley129, thanks much for the suggestions! Here are my initial thoughts:

epicusername, thanks tons for your thoughts as well!

  • I think you're right on Pollenbright Wings. By the time the deck gets rolling, I don't really need it any more. I'm less sure about Saproling Burst, but I agree I need to find a home for more recursion. I was exited about Eternal Witness from the first sketchy rumors of her reprint, and I get more excited about Verdant Confluence every time I look at it!
  • Homeward Path normally lives in my sideboard. That's a great reminder though; I'll definitely pull it back into the mainboard until the local meta settles down again.
  • Descent of the Dragons would be a tough pull. The deck's not that counter-heavy, so it's usually good value. And turning hordes of Saprolings into hordes of Dragons is just SO fun! But I want that goat, so I've got to find a home somewhere...
  • The ability to attack without fear that I get with Reconnaissance is awesome, but the deck gets rolling a little slower than I'd like and I've been considering more ramp. Avacyn's Pilgrim would help out there, and I really like the rec'.

Thanks again!!!

If the ability of Hammer of Purphoros is no interest to you, Fervor is the same cmc, but less color intensive.

Great recommendation, K34!
(I actually ordered a Fervor online, earlier this week!)

Where is the avenger and craterhoof both to good to not be here!!! Avenger makes saporlings.

November 13, 2015 11:55 p.m.

clayperce says... #5

Thanks, ohitsshowtime, but Avenger of Zendikar makes plants, not Saprolings. And Craterhoof Behemoth is out of budget.

ohitsshowtime says... #6

Ahhhh I see I thought it would be worth and you wanna keep it strictly dragons and saporlings

Like i all decks w/ the shard dragons i recommend Painter's Servant. It works really nicely w/ Rith's saproling making ability in that you get a saproling for EVERY permanent on the field and flavor wise it is a scarecrow watching over your garden. While it might be out of your budget the price is definitely worth it to watch the look on your opponent's face when you count all permanents.

Thanks tons Markofer! I've never seen Painter's Servant before and I think it'd be a great add to the deck. It's just a really neat way to boost Rith's Saproling production early, and it opens up a ton of synergy options...

Have you contemplated Parallel Evolution

November 15, 2015 11:44 p.m.

clayperce says... #10

Yeah Faybian, I like it and especially its big brother Primal Vigor (because it's repeatable even beyond a Flashback). But there are some other token decks that show up in my group regularly, so it's unfortunately a sideboard card.

Thanks tons though!

Life and Limb + Sporemound for ultimate saproling combo!

November 17, 2015 12:01 p.m.

clayperce says... #12

Yeah o_O, I love that combo! I've never been able to pull it off on an actual table, but I add the cards to my deck periodically. Right now they're living in my maybeboard, but I suspect I'll maindeck them forever, if I can ever make it happen! :-)

Love your username, by the way!

If you were to ever play that combo in a tournament it would be a draw since it is a must effect. Here's the ruling

104.4b If the game somehow enters a loop of mandatory actions, repeating a sequence of events with no way to stop, the game is a draw. Loops that contain an optional action dont result in a draw.

However, if it's casual play then I'm sure you can cut off the tokens at 1 billion with everyone's permission.

clayperce says... #14

Lanzo493, you can totally play Life and Limb + Sporemound without a draw.

The key part of the ruling is "...with no way to stop..." Just drop the Sporemound in a sac' engine or put some instant-speed Enchantment removal on the stack to kill the Life and Limb, and you're good for an arbitrarily large number of Saprolings, not an infinite amount.

Thank you! :)

Just remember not to play it if there's nothing that can interrupt it or kill the opponent when it goes off, because otherwise, it will be unstoppable and the game will automatically end :(

Lanzo493 says... #16

Yes, that is true clayperce. If I could ever pull off that combo, I would love to have Blasting Station out at the same time...

November 17, 2015 3:07 p.m.

clayperce says... #17

Oh, that'd be awesome, Lanzo493!

If it ever happens for me, it'll probably be with either Goblin Bombardment or Purphoros, God of the Forge. Or maybe an Impact Tremors. Though the absolute best would with Ashnod's Altar, Skyshroud Elf, and Moonveil Dragon out. I know it's like the most fragile combo ever. But a screaming hoard of Firebreathing Saprolings for everyone? THAT would be a win for the ages!

Markofer, I just realized why I've never seen Painter's Servant before. It's banned in EDH.

Hey, nice deck! I love using Rith in this one token-themed casual commander deck I made. (Btw thanks for that shoutout, I didn't know there was a tappedout thread about flavor text).

Have you tried Cathars' Crusade? It's a great mega-booster.

November 26, 2015 5:59 a.m.

clayperce says... #20

Thanks Bovine073! And no worries on the shout-out--thanks for pulling all those cards together in the first place!

Yeah, I love Cathars' Crusade! I have the custom categories so stuff can be hard to find, but it's already in my mainboard under Exploit.

Thanks again!

Bovine073 says... #21

Ah, yes I had looked in the Pump category for it and didn't find it lol.

I'm surprised there is no Intangible Virtue? Also Sigil Captain but its kinda a rhino and not a dragon but... lol.

November 26, 2015 1:51 p.m.

clayperce says... #22

Yeah, Intangible Virtue would be good. I think I pulled it at some point for Spear of Heliod, but I'm surprised I didn't leave it on my maybeboard. It's worth a re-look for sure!

I ran Sigil Captain for a while and found him to be really inconsistent. As soon as I get any pump effects out, he's just a dead card, since his ability "... will take into account counters that it enters the battlefield with and static abilities that may give it a continuous power boost ... (such as the one on Glorious Anthem) ..." :-(

Zerienga says... #23

Not sure how you'd feel about it, but with the amount of saprolings you're making, maybe something like Bloodspore Thrinax to buff the mass amounts of saprolings you make?

As for graveyard removal, I'm not really seeing anything in your deck that cares about your graveyard, so maybe Rest in Peace.

Other good cards (cheap): Dragon Tempest gives you damage when you get dragons, and gives your dragons another way to get haste. Dromoka, the Eternal gives you another way to get counters from a dragon attacking through Bolster 2.

Good card (expensive): Dragon Broodmother gives you baby dragons that can get bigger at each upkeep.

Very nice deck!

November 27, 2015 1:40 a.m.

Zerienga says... #24

And I just thought of another way you can exploit your saprolings and dragons: Altar of the Brood.

November 27, 2015 1:45 a.m.

clayperce says... #25

Thanks Zerienga!

I like Bloodspore Thrinax a lot, and actually picked one up just the other day, along with some other C15 cards.

Rest in Peace looks great. I got slaughtered by the new Meren deck the other day and realized I have VERY few answers for graveyard/reanimation decks. RIP is on my shortlist for sure!

I ran Dragon Tempest in an earlier version of the deck, and I keep going back and forth on it. It's good mid-game and great late game, but was too often a dead card in the early game. the deck's hanged a lot though since then, so I should give it a re-look. Thanks much for the reminder!

Dromoka, the Eternal's worth a look for sure. I took a hard look at Dragonlord Dromoka and decided to wait until she rotates out of Standard (and her price hopefully drops). But I have no idea why I didn't look at the original!

Altar of the Brood is really interesting. And I love the combo potential with RIP!

And yeah, I go back and forth on Dragon Broodmother all the time. She'd be a perfect fit for the deck, but she's right on the edge of my budget and I worry about the amount of hate she's sure to draw. I'll probably splurge on her at some point, but I have to solve my Meren problem first :-)
