I found this card laying around yesterday and thought it should be in your deck. Nemata, Grove Guardian

Bovine073,
I considered it for the flavor, but I just don't need any of the effects enough to justify the slot. Thanks though!

mack10k,
Thanks for thinking of my Rith, but I'm not a big fan of the card. Sprout Swarm is a much better Saproling generator, and for a 6-drop Creture, I'd prefer a Dragon. And though the idea of sac'ing half my board to pump the other half is interesting, I'm not sure I really need another wincon.

Thanks again!

Hey clay, what about Second Harvest?

Bovine073,
I'm not so sure about it for this deck ... lately, it seems everyone who can play White has a Declaration in Stone, which makes Second Harvest kind of a sad-more card :-(

However, I love it for my Hazezon Tamar deck, Sandbagging w/ Hazezon, where I have a bunch of effects that do direct damage whenever a Creature ETBs. It's perfect there, so thanks tons!

Skyshroud Claim is a need for any deck that runs forest-type dual lands, such as Cinder Glade and Canopy Vista PLUS they come into play untapped in case you really need the mana fixing!

lonker,
Skyshroud Claim is a great card, and I totally run it in my Hazezon Tamar deck. But that's because he prefers Land ramp (since he generates Sand Warriors based on the "number of lands under your control"). Rith, the Awakener prefers mana dorks, since she generates Saprolings based on "each permanent of that color".

Thanks though!

What is your thought on Dragonlord Atarka?

She can be used as additional removal for creatures or planeswalkers and is an 8/8 flying body with trample.

Also, do you think you would have any use for Eldritch Evolution? Seems like it could be a useful tutor, or maybe Traverse the Ulvenwald?

demonicgrizzly,
Sorry it's taken me literally months to get back to you on your comments!

Dragonlord Atarka is certainly a great card, but I like Atarka, World Render better in the seven-drop slot, because Double-strike with Rith is just insane. Pulling one of the 6-drop slots for World Render is an option, but I'd probably rather have Dragonlord Dromoka to mess with the Blue mages or Moonveil Dragon for my inner Timmy ... because FIREBREATHING SAPROLINGS! :-)

Eldritch Evolution and Traverse the Ulvenwald are great cards too, but you may have missed this in my description: I'm aiming for a 75% build, with no tutors (except for lands).

Thanks tons though!

What do you think about Gratuitous Violence and Pandemonium in this deck?

November 18, 2016 7:14 p.m.

clayperce that is a exceptional article

Your reasoning for double strike with Rith is sound.

And fire breathing saprolings would be amazing

Have you thought about possibly adding Life and Limb?

January 13, 2017 8:04 a.m.

clayperce says... #14

Almond1991,
Yeah, I have the Life and Limb+Sporemound infinite combo in my maybeboard and actually run it every now and then. It's SUPER-risky though (losing all your actual Forests to a boardwipe just rots), so I never play it except when I'm in an extremely Timmy mood.

mack10k,
I've never looked at Gratuitous Violence and it's definitely intriguing. I'll give it a hard look; thanks much!

I'm not generally a fan of group hug cards, and IMO Pandemonium is one of the worst. Giving that kind of power to another token deck (Goblins, especially) just fills me with ugh. Along those lines though, Warstorm Surge is great ... I run it in Sandbagging with Hazezon.

Thanks again!

Ah nice, yeah it's a bit risky using Life and Limb, but I've found combined with Breath of Fury you can get some pretty nice quick build ups, as well as the infinite you've suggested. Also found that Stalking Vengeance and Coat of Arms works quite well with Rith.

Almond1991,
I like Aggravated Assault just a little more than Breath of Fury, but that'd be a fun effect for sure. Stalking Vengeance is good, but I'd never give up Atarka, World Render in the seven-drop slot for it. You may want to run Vicious Shadows too ... I have it in my Hazezon deck, for a similar effect.

Like I mentioned above with Pandemonium vs. Warstorm Surge, I'm not a fan of group hug cards like Coat of Arms.

Thanks though!

Hi,

I am willing to make this deck. is this deck fun to play and a competetive multi deck. not that it is to play tournaments but just casual games and taking a few wins in the progress.if so is the list above the updated version?

Thanks :)

Lode_Denolf,
I'm so glad to hear you're interested in playing Rith! Tbh, it's kind of hard to answer your question though. I personally LOVE this deck, and find it an absolute blast to play. But it's not especially competitive ... though in a weird way, that's actually one of its strengths! Not sure if that makes sense ... what I mean is that most opponents look at a 6-drop Commander with a not-obviously-strong ability, and figure you're probably not much of a threat. So with just a little bit of politicking, most folks will leave you alone for a while. Until they find out the hard way that her ability is seriously broken. I think the best summary is something like: Rith can absolutely win games, but please understand this deck is more about satisfying my inner Timmy than my inner Spike! :-)

I really like this list, but I don't think I've changed it up since BFZ (because I've been playing TONS more Standard and Modern lately than Commander). So there are almost certainly some great cards in OGW/SOI/EDM/KLD/AER that would be worth adding. And of course from C17 as well. For example, Tana, the Bloodsower and Bruse Tarl, Boorish Herder can start adding value a full two turns earlier, so are almost certainly more competitive. Nevertheless, I'm sticking with a certain giant purple-winged dragon! :-)

Good luck (and good skill) with your build!

hey

1 more question. if you succesfully hit an oponant with rith can you use his ability more than 1 time or is it restricted to 1 time?

thanks

Lode_Denolf,
I hope you have fun too!

One minor point on your question: In Magic lore, Rith is female.

But to actually answer: You can pay for a swarm of Saprolings every time Rith triggers. In a 'normal' turn that's only once. But if she has Double-strike and connects twice, you can pay to activate her ability twice. Similarly, with Strionic Resonator, you can pay to copy the trigger and then pay to activate her ability twice.

Of note, her ability is bonkers on its own, but super-bonkers if you can do it twice with a bunch of Green permanents on the battlefield, because you recount the number of colored permanents for the second activation. For example, say your game is down to you vs. an Elfball deck and you're way behind ... maybe your opponent has 10 Elves out and you only have Rith. But she has Double-strike and can connect twice. So during the First Strike Combat Damage Step Rith's ability triggers and you may pay , choose Green, count 11 Green permanents (Rith plus the 10 Elves), and place 11 Saproling tokens on the board. Then during the normal Combat Damage Step her ability triggers again and you may pay , choose Green, count 22 Permanents (Rith + 10 Elves + 11 Saprolings), and place 22 more Saprolings on the board. Tee hee :-)

Hope this helps!
