Snakes on a Pillow - Starring Tariel Jackson

Commander / EDH Control Multiplayer Pillow Fort RBW (Mardu)

"Enough is enough! I've had it with these mother&%#@'ing snakes on this mother&%#@'ing pillow!"

This is a multiplayer RWB EDH deck based around the idea of punishing other players who attempt to "cheat" - rushing huge creatures, dropping huge piles of lands, and gaining tons of life. After reading about this fantastic deck, I wanted to incorporate many of its ideas with some fun creatures and spells that have come out since 2006.

Basically, the idea is to combine two playstyles:

Pillow Fort - which uses cards like Norn's Annex and Windborn Muse, Phyrexian Unlife, and Righteous Cause - stresses a "You can't attack me" mentality; Either the opponent is simply unable to use certain creatures to attack before removing an enchantment or paying a fee, or the situation is simply unfavorable for them to do so, and "Rattlesnake" - exemplified by cards like Hissing Miasma , Dread , Blood Reckoning , and reflection cards like Captain's Maneuver - which says "By all means, please, attack me if you must, but it will cost you!

The result is a deck that forces opponents to make a conscious decision not to disrupt your board state or attack you directly. Additionally, this deck requires a lot of assistance from your ability to talk with your opponents; In a four or five player game, you want to be able to subtly urge on your opponents to make choices that favor you under the guise of instead favoring them and theirs.

There is a third element of this deck that I am experimenting with: Punishment effects. Cards like Acidic Soil , Backlash , Polluted Bonds , Shattered Angel , and Thornbite Staff (which combos excellently with Tariel, Reckoner of Souls ) to counter-act players who use alternative methods to attempt to quickly seize the board and alter the flow of gameplay. Someone throw down a T4 Elvish Piper+Worldspine Wurm? Put them in their place and rally your other opponents behind you!

Overall, this deck requires a high degree of player interaction over board interaction, and strives to be the second-to-last player alive in almost all cases. Clinching the win is usually done through surprise combos such as Phyrexian Unlife coupled with either Soul Conduit or Repay in Kind, both of which can also be used to recover from being focused. If need be, you can also eliminate players on a 1-vs-1 basis using equipment like Helm of the Gods or Umbral Mantle.
