This deck is retired

Mono white midrange soldier deck, capitalizing on devotion and a simple manabase.

Please don't suggest Preeminent Captain, Phalanx Leader , or Eidolon of Countless Battles.

Creatures

  • Soldier of the Pantheon : 2/1 for W with relevant upsides. 1-drops are important against the many slower decks in the format.
  • Herald of Anafenza : This guy can win games. Chump blocking with its Outlast is the least he does, besides eating a removal spell. If I have the opportunity to continually use its Outlast without losing tempo, he just generates bodies and helps stabilize or break through stalemates.
  • Vanguard of Brimaz : WW cost is very relevant for devotion. Built-in Vigilance is pretty awesome with Devouring Light and against Goblin Rabblemaster.
  • Raise the Alarm: Gets me double anthem power, lets me chump block, increases in value with Ajani Steadfast, etc. Very versatile.
  • Abzan Falconer: A pretty sick card to put down at most points in a game. It can win the game upon casting if I already have a few creatures with counters out, or it can come out before Ajani Steadfast and put the opponent on a fast clock.
  • Brimaz, King of Oreskos: Powerhouse creature. Wins if they can't answer it. Vigilance is very relevant.
  • High Sentinels of Arashin : Insane flier if left unchecked, this is usually the opponent's top priority for removal. Ajani Steadfast the turn after this guy can just steal a game.
  • Wingmate Roc: Another powerhouse, gives me more power in the air and more lifegain. 3 power dodges Elspeth, Sun's Champion, 4 toughness dodges Anger of the Gods.

Spells

  • Spear of Heliod: Sweet anthem, adds to devotion, can prevent opponents from attacking by just holding up mana.
  • Banishing Light: Catch-all removal, hits almost everything relevant in the meta, generates tempo in the early rounds when I've got beaters on the ground.
  • Devouring Light : An extra copy of removal in the main, excellent card with Vigilance creatures and Raise the Alarm.
  • Ajani Steadfast: The best planeswalker for the build. +1 helps to race and/or stabilize, -2 wins games, ultimate will probably never happen but still pretty awesome. At 4 mana he is in the perfect PW spot.
  • Obelisk of Urd: Another finisher. Great way to close it out or to get well ahead in life totals.

Sideboard

I can board out some of the early drops to make room for more removal. This is great against decks that want to bring in Drown in Sorrow or Anger of the Gods. I can also just replace some removal with more efficient removal like Erase and Glare of Heresy while keeping my aggressive build.

Lost only the final match at game day, deck performed pretty awesomely.

Don't remember what I played against in match 1.

Match 2 was against a RW tokens/Purphoros, God of the Forge/Elspeth, Sun's Champion deck. Lost game 1 to Goblin Rabblemaster, Purphoros, Elspeth. Won game 2 when he flooded out into Purphoros, which I Erased. Won game 3 in a very close race against Rabblemaster, Obelisk of Urd let me swing for 16 at once.

Match 3 was against an Abzan midrange build. Didn't run as much spot removal, ran Ajani, Mentor of Heroes, Elspeth, Sun's Champion, Siege Rhino, Rakshasa Deathdealer, etc. Game 1 he had to mulligan to 5, played out his hand to a Siege Rhino, but I managed to fly over him with Herald of Anafenza and Abzan Falconer and some tokens to finish the game. Game 2 he got a little land screwed, got out sylvan caryatids and Boon Satyr but couldn't find lands. I kept up pressure with Obelisk of Urd, he used Banishing Light on it, but I played out Ajani Steadfast and won over a couple turns with fliers.

Match 4 was against Abzan midrange. Won game 1 pretty quickly with some well-timed Banishing Lights. Lost game 2 with a terrible misplay, playing out my hand into Elspeth, Sun's Champion which wiped my board, leaving me with only Obelisk of Urd. Lost game 3 in pretty much the same way. Had Wingmate Roc and its token and a High Sentinels of Arashin in play, our game was coming down to turns, so I played an Ajani Steadfast and used its -2 to make my guys bigger. In hindsight it was completely unnecessary since I had a 2-turn clock, and he'd just gotten his 6th land out.
