I don't have enough +1/+1 counter interaction to warrant a slot for Hardened Scales.

I've currently gotten an Abzan outlast based deck (with the mandatory seige rhino playset, of course), but I might actually change it to something more similar to this. I really do feel sorry for your opponents. How well would it fare in modern, though? What with tarkir rotating out fairly soon.

With some changes, this deck could fare decently in Modern. The big changes would be completely changing the mana base, and adding Tarmogoyf.

Goyf makes everything better

Heir seems better. It has deathtouch, and you will eventually run out of lands to feed the Gnarlid. See if you hit lands or gas more often.

Also for Modern, don't forget Path, Thoughtseize, Dark Confidant, Liliana, Abrupt Decay, the mortgage on your house...

I'll be testing them all out at the next FNM I go to.

The 2 drop you should use is Sylvan Advocate. It is straight good early game and good late game. Though it may not get a trigger from the Anafenza upon attacking, you have other options of where to put that triggered +1/+1 counter elsewhere. Such as a Den Protector...

4 Den Protector and no Deathmist Raptor? Whyyyyyy?

Yeah, that's not a bad idea. Thanks bro

8bit9mm

Deathmist Raptor fits well with Den Protector in a megamorph shell, which is designed to go long in games, but in this aggro shell I aim to end the game before Deathmist Raptor's recursion becomes really valuable.

Deathmist Raptor goes well with Den Protector in the Abzan Company shell, but not an aggro shell. Hitting double green when you want plenty of white sources with a black source here and there can be quite difficult. I agree with TheHroth about this one. From my experience playing a lot of Abzan, it is just rough on the mana base.

UpperDeckerTaco, what would you think of splashing for Reflector Mage? It would slow down the deck a lot and become more midrange, but then I could add Deathmist Raptor and Reflector Mage, which are just stupid good.

February 3, 2016 5:28 p.m.

I don't think you would even need to add Raptor if you did that. The splash of blue wouldn't help the green mana base, it would help the white and black portions. It might be easier on the mana as well. I could see R Mage being a decent 2-3 of like some of those other Abzan Blue decks. If you were to do that though, I would trim on DP to 3. Moved Gideon to 2 (or just sideboard Sorin) and then you could trim a land. 26 land is very high for an aggro deck, and although I understand the purpose of it, it would probably still function just as well with 25.

I think that if you splash blue you have to commit to a Bant shell (either CoCo or midrange). Deathmist Raptor is very viable there, but the Abzan mana base is already really stretched thin in Standard (this is coming from a Modern Abzan Company player though, so take it as you will).

I find Bant to be a much more smooth mana base for this current Standard and that's why I moved away from Abzan Company to Bant Company for now.

Outside of a Collected Company shell, don't feel Bant to be worthwhile. Siege Rhino is still too good to pass up so I think I'll stick to Abzan Blue. I'll try it out at FNM and see if it's any good. I'll update accordingly.

I've been finding the mana to be just too inconsistent. I'll be sticking with Abzan until rotation, unless I decide to give Esper one last hurrah before Dig Through Time rotates.

Psychosocial

I don't necessarily disagree, but why?

It maximizes Advocate, and can save you in long grindy games.

I'm going to pretend I knew that Sylvan Advocate buffed land creatures too... Wow. I need to learn to read.

I really really love this latest version of the deck. What's your opinion of it?

March 7, 2016 12:16 a.m.

I like it a lot, the one thing I think it's missing is at least a 1 of Kalitas, Traitor of Ghet somewhere in the 75.

TheHroth says... #25

It definitely is missing Kalitas, but I don't have any, unfortunately.
