Millennia ago, Edgar, Charmed Groom   Markov (Sorin of House Markov  's grandfather) became a vampire through the demon Shilgengar, Sire of Famine. Edgar then performed a Dark Ritual, creating the first Innistrad vampires. This was how he became a Planeswalker. Around one thousand years after his ascension, Sorin Markov set his sights on the Eldrazi: Emrakul, the World Anew, Ulamog, the Defiler, Kozilek, Butcher of Truth. He partnered with Nahiri, the Lithomancer and Ugin, the Spirit Dragon to create the Hedrons to imprison the Eldrazi in a Perilous Vault.

After successfully imprisoning the Eldrazi, Sorin headed back to Innistrad to find that the vampires were hunting humans to near extinction. He decided to create Avacyn, Angel of Hope to protect the humans, and created the Helvault to imprison stronger creatures.

Nahiri came to Innistrad to take her revenge on Sorin. She turned his family members to stone Declaration in Stone. Sorin saw and decided enough was enough Merciless Resolve. While investigating where Nahiri went, he came across Olivia Voldaren, the leader of another vampire tribe. She promised her aid, and gathered her forces Olivia's Dragoon, Call the Bloodline. He came across a demented Avacyn, and was forced to kill her Anguished Unmaking. With his new allies, he runs a Campaign of Vengeance to fight Nahiri, but was later trapped in stone.

During the War of the Spark, Sorin was called to Ravnica when the Interplanar Beacon was lit Ignite the Beacon
