Is it an aggro deck or a lifegain deck or both?

I made my own version of this deck because I like it so much. It's not as cool for budget reasons but here it is: Oprah Winfrey

I really like Rest for the Weary , and had it in another deck. But I think it's better for a different kind of lifegain deck. This deck, and Soul Sisters decks in general, want creatures that gain you life or synergize with lifegain. They want fewer non-creature spells in the deck, just like Martyr of Sands wants few non-white spells. Rest for the Weary is better for more of a controlling or turbo-fog lifegain deck.

@ Matsi883 - It's both. It's designed to get a lot of low cmc creatures on the battlefield, the majority of which have some sort of life gaining mechanic (i.e. lifelink, extort or "creature enters the battlefield"). These all play into the bombs of the deck, which would be Ajani's Pridemate and Serra Ascendant which get pretty big pretty quick.

@ qk1 - That's exactly the way I felt about Rest for the Weary . It would be great in a more control oriented deck, but in this deck, it just doesn't have as much utilization.

I would drop 2 plains and add 2x Thrull Parasite . For a deck with the highest cmc of 3, 19 lands should be more than enough. I run 18 in my b/w extort (not posted yet, sorry) and I never have problems with mana, and you'll usually have enough to extort every spell at least once or twice, if not more. Anyways, I love where this deck is going.

Oh, I guess I do run 20, haha. Oops. Anyways, I just posted mine if you want to take a look :) Enchanting Tap-to-Kill Extortion

@ Jitio I had Thrull Parasite in here before, but with Martyr of Sands , it didn't make a lot of sense. I'm thinking about dropping 2 lands for either 2 Orzhov Charm or 2 Rhox Faithmender ...

Thoughts anyone?

I'm not the best mtg player around, but the Rhox Faithmender seems to synergize with your deck better than the Orzhov Charm would. It doesn't fit the cmc theme of the deck, but fits nicely otherwise.

OK, I am going to say here you are getting a lot of bad suggestions. WB Soul sisters can be a thing, but it is weaker than normal soul sisters.

Really, the only thing worth splashing black for are Lingering Souls for more dudes before and after boardwipe and Orzhov Charm for removal, bouncing and returning a Serra Ascendant, but even those aren't as good as Spectral Procession and Proc.

I would personally drop the guildmage, nighthawk, tithe drinker, suture priest and assassin from the deck totally. I would then sideboard Blind, because it is amazing versus aggro decks and some combo decks.

This is one of the ways I might build it. http://tappedout.net/mtg-decks/soul-sisters-help-please-copy-30-05-13-1/

I like this deck! I'm loving playing around with Orzhov right now, W/B has some fun synergy and Extort is a lot of fun as a mechanic. Nice work!

Thanks Deathless. Anything you can think of that would make it better? I'd like to start getting sideboard stuff together. I play against Tron, b/w vampire aggro, June, and mono b control. Every once in a while there is some birthing pod action or merfolk... So basically anything that will ruin any of those decks and hopefully have synergy with life gain.

Solemn Offering is a little pricey (cmc-wise) compared to the rest of the costs of the deck, but would make a good sideboard option for getting rid of artifacts/enchants while gaining life. The costs of Elite Inquisitor or Midnight Duelist fit and would help in the sideboard against vampire aggro. And off the top of my head, Angel of Jubilation is definitely high cmc for your setup, but with the amount of sac that goes on with mono b control, could definitely help

Solemn Offering might be good. I've tried Elite Inquisitor and Midnight Duelist before, but to no avail. Too much removal in the guy's deck. The B control I play against is mostly discard. Megrim and The Rack style. The decks I have the most trouble with are the Tron and Jund decks. Though with Path to Exile , the Wurmcoil Engine in Tron becomes less of a problem. Ghost Quarter may be a decent card to get rid of the tron lands, and any artifact removal...

For playing against heavy discard, I'd go with a couple Elixir of Immortality for more life and to get some cards back, and maybe a few Sign in Blood to get some more draw. Pathing that damn Wurmcoil Engine is a good choice, I have a friend running with those, I usually try to o-ring or Murder them. Last ditch effort is throwing my poor Nighthawks in the way.

jlgadrow says... #15

I don't want to Murder the Wurmcoil Engine because then I have to deal with the 2 3/3 tokens. I was actually thinking that Shattering Blow might be very decent.

Matsi883 says... #16

I wouldn't contribute 4 slots just for dealing with a Wurmcoil Engine , but if there's something better in Modern that says "exile target artifact or enchantment," I'm all for it.

jlgadrow says... #17

I have played against a couple of affinity decks at my local shop, which is why I gave 4 slots up. Against Tron, I'd only side in 3 max though. I can deal with the Wurmcoil Engine pretty well with Path to Exile , but the Mindslaver and all the Expedition Map , Chromatic Star , etc. shenanigans would need to be dealt with as well. Though, they can all be dealt with via Surgical Extraction .

Do you think 2 of would be more suited?

Aside from siding in more removal, what would be the best way to deal with the aggro vampire deck? It's W/B, and uses a little lifegain + Vampire Nocturnus to win most of the time.

Revoke Existence is probably the best you can get (it's sorcery speed, it would be ideal at instant). Play it instead of Shattering Blow .

jlgadrow says... #21

I totally forgot about Nevermore . I'll have to play around with Revoke Existence not being instant speed does suck but at least it offers more than 1 use.

Dump Vampire Nighthawk , anti synergy with Martyr of Sands . Likewise with Royal Assassin , but I don't imagine i'll be able to convince you to shy away from your goofy combo.

June 3, 2013 7:36 a.m.

jlgadrow says... #23

Yeah, no. If anything I'll dump Martyr of Sands .

Matsi883 says... #24

Martyr of Sands is a important tool for lifegain, especially when it and Vizkopa Guildmage are lethal turn 4 if you reveal 7 white cards.

Last thing, jlgadrow, what do you think of Controlled Collection?

Many apologies if linking my deck in your comment thread is in poor taste, still new to Tapped Out.
