Spell Scourge (Jeleva, Nephalia's Scourge)

Sideboard

This deck was based, for a very large part, on my Izzet themed deck, featuring Melek, Izzet Paragon: Izzet Real (Melek, Izzet Paragon). Then Jeleva, Nephalia's Scourge came out and I updated my old deck to this new general. Obviously she 'operates' very differently than Melek: not only does she have a colour more, but the spells are also exiled. Moreover, her ability allows you to chose whether you pay casting cost for the spell or not (so yes, you can pay alternative castings costs such as kicker, but not spells with an ). Also, her ability exiles cards from each player's library: so the Melek deck needed a major revision.

Haste and evasion

While Jeleva, Nephalia's Scourge has evasion, it is even more important to protect here than in a Melek deck since she exiles the cards and when she leaves play those cards will be gone forever. Thus you want her to 'die' only on your terms (i.e. when you need new spells). So you want her attacking quickly after she comes into play, and you want her protected.

Casting Spells

This deck aims to be disrupting, and winning because your opponents can't find their flow. Therefore, I included major creature removal spells especially those that leave my sparse creatures on the playing field, such as Decree of Pain and Plague Wind. Other removal includes: Blatant Thievery which removes the creatures (or other permanents) from their rightful owners which is good enough, Evacuation which removes all creatures from the battlefield and additionally allows you to recast Jeleva, and Inferno .

Memory Lapse, Griptide , Eternal Dominion and Jeleva, Nephalia's Scourge + Possibility Storm deserve special mention. Memory Lapse places the countered spell back on the opponents library: after which you can exile it with Jeleva (and even play it yourself). Griptide does the same but for creatures on the battlefield. Eternal Dominion: just cast spells to infinity and beyond. And Possibility Storm hugely disrupts your opponents play, while you can still play spells via Jeleva.

Listed among the land cards is Maze of Ith, but that card is so powerful in this deck. It does not only keep particularly nasty creatures at bay, it also is combo: Jeleva, Nephalia's Scourge + Maze of Ith attack with Jeleva, and then tap the maze to return Jeleva while she still allows you to cast a spell.

Stacking

Deck stacking is important in this deck, since there is a big chance that spells you have on your hand will just be sitting there for a long time: Lim-Dul's Vault, Insidious Dreams, Brainstorm, Jeleva, Nephalia's Scourge + Scroll Rack solve this problem for you.

Cards that have synergy with spells being played include:

Spells that copy sorceries or instants have no additional value to this deck, and have been excluded.
