The Spell Spiral deck is a whirlwind of counter spells and Turn gainers. This deck focuses on detaining your opponents attacks long enough to get extra turns and then draw even more spells and play extra lands. This deck has several main functions...- gathering up huge quantities of lands in small amounts of time- getting the exact spell you need to your hand at a moments notice- Getting so many extra turns in a row that you won't know what to do with them
Playing removal spells like Izzet Charm and Turn//Burn keep the board clear of any pesky spells and attackers early in the game. Mystical Tutor is an easy card to play on turn one in order set up any type on instant you might need. One you have around 3 - 5 mana, you can begin to play more effective spells like Counterflux, Cryptic Command, and of course, Cunning Wish. Once you have about 7 - 11 mana, you can really begin to play dangerous combos.
Probably the most effective combo card is Nivix Guildmage. His second ability can copy all your spells. So you could play a combo like Mystical Tutor, search for a Temporal Mastery, put it on top of your deck, next turn draw it for it's miracle cost, and then copy it with Nivix Guildmage. With six mana you could get 2 extra turns, or for ten mana, 3 extra turns. And with those extra turns, you can play even more mana, search for more spells and get more turns. With this combo you could end up with twelve mana and several readied counter spells before your opponent can get any serious threat out.
The most important card by far, besides Nivix, is Cunning Wish. In fact, these two cards make a great combo. By Copying the wish you can get several instants at a moments notice ready to counter any type of deck you opponent has. Since a card removed from the game does not count as totally out of the game (that rule was changed), I added two more extra Wish cards in the sideboard so that if you copy a wish in your hand, you can get any spell you want along with another wish card.
A great way to search for creatures if you have don'y have any in your hand, is to play Muddle the Mixture's Transmute cost to search for either type of creature. Even though this deck only has 8 creatures, this deck compensates with spell versatility. Several cards allow you to draw new cards when played, so there really isn't any need for worry of depleting yourself of playable spells. If you do begin to run out of cards, you can simply play Learn from the Past (which you can get from your sideboard), to shuffle all your cards into your library, which is now ready to be searched again with Mystical Tutor.
The best way to achieve victory over your opponent is to get Tamiyo, the Moon Sage's emblem, get the cards Turnabout, and Urza's Rage to your hand with a Cunning Wish. Technically all you need is 5 mana for this combo to work (but chances are you will have way more then that). Since any cad can go straight back to your hand with the emblem simply tap all your mana, keep for mana aside to play Turnabout. Return Turnabout to your hand, and then repeat this proccess as many times as you wish. Then spend all that unused mana to play Urza's Rage (or for that matter, any burn spell) any number of times, and then you can deal an infinite amount of damage to your opponent. With this combo you can kill your opponent off no matter what there life total is.
With this deck you can find spell loops where you can keep playing spells nonstop while your opponent is doing all they can to just keep up.
This deck has several more combos, but I think I have explained this deck's main functions.
Please feel free to suggest any cards of combos that you see as being an asset to this deck.
