Great deck, I would drop the Echo Mage, he's just asking to be removed, probably just add some more removal in his place.

Dropping Echo Mage is kind of a tough call for me though. Against burn decks, he makes it so that the opponent takes twice as much damage as I do. Same thing with mill or control decks, or spells that put tokens into play or counters on creatures.

And as I said in the description, he's able to make my own spells very efficient too. Bounce three lands and cascade with Deny Reality for just 7 mana. Tap two creatures and untap four lands with a tripled Hidden Strings, or just tap up to six blockers in one shot. Last Gasp a 9/9 or weaker creature to death for four mana, even if it's indistructible or can't be hit with Doomblade. Tripled Treacherous Urge to gain a sudden offense for a turn.

I'll take a look at what might replace him, but it won't be an easy change. If you can think of a card that would work better for this deck than he does, please let me know.

Against burn decks he's far too slow, and if they were worried about him, they could just as easily burn him. Versus mill decks they will have milled you considerably before you can even duplicate their spells. Against control decks, they would love to see you sink your mana for the turn into him, because it means that you didn't play a threat, and when they kill him, they get extreme value. As far as duplicating your own spells, do you really want to pay 5UUUUUU just to get a creature that can UU duplicate? Or would you rather just play a spell in his place.

....Okay, fair enough. And looking at Gatherer, there's a couple fairly obvious choices that would do the same job for less investment - particularly Twincast and Mirror Sheen.

But in any case, you're right. I'll have to experiment and see what I can come up with.

You could use Bile Blight or Ulcerate over Last Gasp. Bile Blight offering the possibility of killing more than one creature at the cost of 2 black instead of one, and Ulcerate costing less mana but hurting you as well.I also would try Murderous Cut over Doom Blade, it may not work as well against a speed deck, but later game it can be played for 1 and can kill anything.

Bile Blight swapped in over Last Gasp, but I'm still considering between Murderous Cut and Doom Blade. On the one hand, if I can't kill it with Doom Blade I can probably steal it with Mimeofacture or Evil Twin. On the other, I can't exactly get stuff back from my own graveyard unless I add Havengul Lich in somewhere, so might as well use it for something.

Hey I have a deck really close to this, from my personal experience, Nightveil Specter can functionally play lands from your opponent's top deck, and with Exotic Orchard, you don't need so many Chromatic Lantern. I run 2 Annex over lantern.

I actually considered Annex at first. But the problem is that, like Exotic Orchard, Annex limits me to the land and mana colors that my opponent can access at the time. What if he's playing a multicolor deck but gets color-screwed and can't play half his spells? Then I can't play them either. Chromatic Lantern ended up being what I chose specifically so that I don't have that handicap.

Annex is nice for taking away from them and slowing them down, but I just find the lantern's better for what I do.

Jace is too slow and unreliable. They can just give me the least useful spell in their deck. Spellsnatcher's an interesting idea, stealing spells as the opponent plays them, but it requires me to have mana open and his morph cost is at the high end of my balance. Good suggestions though, I'll keep them in mind for another deck I have in the works.

Jace is slow, but he can help you stay alive, or generate card advantage from your own deck. Also his own ultimate lets YOU choose what card to take from your opponent's deck, as well as playing a free one from your own. It is very unlikely that you get to use it, but when you do, you get value.

Wow, I misread Jace completely. My first read-through sounded like each player chooses a card out of THEIR OWN decks. Okay, definitely adding him to the maybes.

Wow, just took a look at the maybeboard, any particular reason you aren't running Bribery? At the very least I'd expect it in the sideboard for the modern decks where you can get more than your investment out of it.

Because I don't own it yet, and because I can't decide what to take out for it.

And I posted that way too quickly. Yeah, I can add that to sideboard in place of Telemin Performance once I get my hands on it.
