Gitaxian Probe could work here. It is free(pay 2 life...) like Manamorphose and you can even use it turn on 1 to pump the Blistercoil Weird as you don't need 2 lands to play it.

I would but no room, and manamorphose it better because I'm not going to be able to attack until turn 2 anyway, and by then I will have 2 land.

+1 Just for the combo, mate. Well done.

I like it! It's quite cheap, works well, and also seems very enjoyable. +1

Gitaxian Probe , as RainerApfelsaft said, is a very good idea.

How about Wee Dragonauts ?

Paradise Mantle together with Blistercoil Weird can work as a very nice little combo. Especially if you have a lot of cantrips like Serum Visions and stuff. Gitaxian Probe and Manamorphose would in this case create mana.

i have a very similar deck kiln fiend m0dern oh and +1

If you are worried about land, try to find land that gives you every color. 4 Mana Confluence would help this deck out a lot. You won't care about losing that 1 life for tapping it because you are racing to try to kill them in just a couple turns any way.

Hyperwrath says... #12

Yeah that sounds good. Since Mana Confluence is holy crap expensive I'm going to add some different 5 color lands.

Have you tried stubborn denial instead of Mizzium Skin

It just seems like an unreliable Turn Aside. Since I only really need to protect my creatures, I think the spells I have are more reliable.

Yah understandable, I just can't count the amount of times I have countered a Thoughtsieze combo that would kill me before I could of combo a win. I am still interested by Turn Aside tho

I like your version a lot right now I am trying to decide if more card selection would be better then more double strike or evasion. I have 8 sources that offer lethal damage and 8 that make unblock able but then I have Gitaxian Probe and cruse combo for the games I can't win turn three or four

I was just thinking doesnt Stubborn Denial trump Turn Aside in every way? You need a creature in play to even play turn aside, so stubborn denial would become a hard counter. So basically they are the exact same, a hard counter as long as you have a creature out except stubborn isnt useless if you dont have a creature out worth protecting and it can counter non creature targeting spells. Just a helpful tip for if you decide to upgrade the sideboard hope this helps!

At first I thought the spell would resolve before kiln fiend gets the boost, but then I looked up kiln fiend's rulings...

"If you cast an instant or sorcery spell, Kiln Fiend's ability triggers and goes on the stack on top of it. The ability will resolve before the spell does."

Holy crap yeah Stubborn Denial is better in every way. Changing that right now. Thanks for the help :)

No worries man thank you for making me actually think it through! I think that spell makes the deck alot more versatile in the current modern meta game.

Gitaxian Probe is incredibly powerful in this style of deck. Not only do you get a free spell to pump your creature, but you also get valuable information. If your opponent is holding Path to Exile, you don't want to attack without a protection spell. Love the inclusion of Gemstone Mine, though! Looks like a strong list, good work!

I've also seen a suicide version of the deck that features Death's Shadow as a strong plan B.

I'm trying to decide if I should mainbored Mizzium Skin or Stubborn Denial. Stubborn Denial lets me counter things like thoughtsieze and Wrath of God that could get past shroud/be annoying, the one problem with it is that if the opponent doesn't try to kill my creature then I CAN'T play it, and can't get the attack boost.

December 27, 2014 9:42 a.m.

twospires says... #22

If you really need the spell just to pump up your creature, you can always counter one of your own spells, so I'd say Stubborn Denial is better. Thoughtseize is the biggest threat on turn 1, where they will pitch your Kiln Fiend every time, unless you have plenty of backup. That's the risky part about running this deck.

Hmm Gitaxian Probe does tell me some valuable information but I'm trying to weigh if it's better than Manamorphose, which sort of helps with mana color problems. I think I might drop any Grixis theme I have going on and add more 5 color lands so I can add Gitaxian Probe and maybe something like Ranger's Guile over Mizzium Skin.

Guys I feel that there's a logical fallacy in the protectors. Let's say I have my creature booted to 7/2 double strike, I have one land left, and my opponent has a removal spell. If I attack he just eats it and is left with 6 health left. If I counter my own spell then my creature gets booted to 10/2 but he just removes it. Obviously I should just attack, but then how would I deal the last 6 damage?

Distortion Strike's rebound could be useful if I drew it, letting me deal a total of 5 damage by itself. I could add something like Not of This World which costs no mana and therefore lets me play 3 spells and prevent him from moving it. More free cards in general or having 4 mana to play 4 spells also prevents this problem. But if I want to win as soon as possible then Not of This World seems like a logical addition... what do you guys think?

Small piece of advice: drop Double Cleave for Armed / Dangerous. It gives you a +1/+1 buff alongside the double strike :) although it is sorcery speed...
