Spells of a Feather Flock Together

Commander / EDH Combo Heroic RW (Boros)

Feather is probably my favourite commander to play. She's super interactive and has a completely unique gameplan that makes otherwise mediocre cards feel really broken. My build has plenty of the standard protection and cantrip effects that Feather loves to abuse, but I also have a flicker/ETB sub-theme going.

We can split the selection of instants and sorceries into a few main categories. Cantrips are usually pretty decent but not great, but with Feather on the field they become really annoying, consistent card draw engines. Expedite, Defiant Strike and Crimson Wisps are extremely cheap and generate card advantage very fast. We also have lots of protection that can also act as pseudo-card advantage like Shelter, Gods Willing and Loran's Escape. The third main group is the flickering spells, with cards like Ephemeratefoil, Cloudshift, Otherworldly Journey and Eerie Interlude to repeatedly abuse powerful ETB effects.

There are also a few extra nice tricky spells in the arsenal - Valor Made Real is normally extremely mediocre, but with Feather on board and some kind of protection card in hand, it completely shuts down the opponents' combat by making it impossible to attack through you. When casting Aurelia's Furyfoil and putting at least one of the damage from it onto one of our own creatures, it too will return to the hand, thus providing a repeating shut-down to non-creature spells. Impact Resonance also becomes repeatable by putting at least one damage on one of our own creatures. Cloudshift is usually just a slightly worse Ephemeratefoil, but if we control an opponent's creature due to the effect of Akroan Conscriptor, due to its wording, Cloudshift will flicker that creature permanently into our control.

Among the creature lineup, cards like Evangel of Heliod, Siege-Gang Commander and Beetleback Chief make lots of tokens to clog the board. Akroan Conscriptor, Akroan Crusader and Phalanx Leader like being targetted over and over again by any spell, while Duplicant, Goblin Chainwhirler, Duergar Hedge-Mage and Solemn Simulacrum like being flickered to get their strong effects repeatedly. We also have spellslinger classics like Guttersnipe, Young Pyromancer and Storm-Kiln Artist that appreciate instant and sorcery spam.

To really go over-the-top, Zada, Hedron Grinder and Mirrorwing Dragon replicate any instant or sorcery cast on them on to each other creature on our board to ludicrous effect. Protecting a full board with Loran's Escape and dropping Expedite on them all to scry 1 ten times in a row before drawing ten cards is basically a game-ending play, and super fun to boot.

Fell the Mighty and Chandra's Ignition are board-wiping effects that target our own creatures, and are therefore repeatable with Feather's effect.

If the gameplan is going well, then we'll be casting many many cantrips, so Thought Vessel and Reliquary Tower are necessary to let us keep all the cards we'll be drawing. This is important because we don't go -1 when we cast an instant or sorcery - it's not uncommon to go many turns with an empty graveyard.

If we have a decent supply of tokens to spare, targetting them with Path to Exile allows us to ramp lands over time.

I'm running Enlightened Tutor, and it has only two purposes - search for Sunforger, or if we already have it, search for Primal Amulet   or whatever artifact creature removal we might want.

Sunforger is, quite frankly, completely broken. Drop for 3, equip for 3, so a little expensive there, but if we keep RW open with it equipped and pass turn, we can wait on whatever the opponents want to do and react perfectly to whatever happens. We can grab protection, flickering, combat tricks, removal, cantrips - whatever is needed for the situation at hand. Always, always get Sunforger whenever possible, and protect it with Loran's Escape if you can. Note that because Sunforger isn't a creature, we can only protect it with Escape once - but it's still worth it.

Primal Amulet   brings the deck's low mana curve even lower. I've found that it's not worth flipping it even after getting all the charge counters on it - it's more efficient to play our two-drops like Shelter and Graceful Reprieve for one as opposed to copying spells that we're already going to be casting many times anyway.
