Spellweaver Volute & Living Lore

Modern* Budget Combo Jank UR (Izzet)

Spellweaver Volute is an interesting, weird, and silly card. It's also dirt cheap to buy, so why not give it a shot?

Spellweaver Volute requires an instant card in a graveyard (and remember, it can be any graveyard). This deck utilizes fun, cheap, and big instant spells that can be useful at any time and not just in response to other effects. Also, because the spell can be cast without paying the mana cost, you can mix and match whatever colors you wish to use.

The following information is outdated. See updates below.

The instant cards I chose:

  • Advent of the Wurm: I like big creatures, and a 5/5 trampling wurm fits the bill beautifully. You can find copies for as low as $0.25. If you want the strength of numbers, I would suggest Gideon's Phalanx or Fated Intervention

  • Fated Infatuation: My answer to summoning more wurms onto the battlefield. If you ever need to you can hard cast for a cheap three mana, and the scrying is a nice bonus.

  • Fated Conflagration : Like Fated Infatuation, you can hard cast this spell if you need to. It's a nice hard hitting answer to large creatures and planeswalkers.

  • Fated Retribution : If things get really hairy, this board wipe will do the trick.

  • Searing Wind : The other poster child of this deck (aside from Spellweaver Volute). It's a large spell, it hits hard, and with the right graveyard set up you can easily end the game by throwing two of these into your opponent's face.

Suggested alternative instant card:

  • Thought Scour: Fill your graveyard and get an extra card in your hand for just the price of one mana.

  • Harvest Pyre : With the use of Stuffy Doll and the nature of the deck filling the graveyard, this is a nice burn spell to use when the graveyard is full of dead cards.

The other requirement of Spellweaver Volute is to use sorcery cards. This means we're gonna go cheap on the price and cheap on the mana!

The sorcery cards I chose:

  • Faithless Looting: This is kind of a no-brainer. One mana, pick and choose your cards, and it can flashback. A perfect choice.

  • Tormenting Voice: Once again it's cheap and it lets you cycle through the deck while filling in the graveyard with instants. The other nice thing is that because it requires a discard as an additional cost, you can fill the graveyard with another usable instant before Spellweaver Volute's trigger begins. This way you have another choice if you happen to run out.

  • Wild Guess : See Tormenting Voice.

  • Compulsive Research : This card is a personal favorite of mine. It's relatively cheap, you get to draw three cards, and then discard two instants for the graveyard. This card can be replaced with whatever you feel like.

  • Explore : I wanted to add a little bit of a ramp since Spellweaver Volute is five mana. I could use Rampant Growth, but the beauty of Explore is that you can essentially play another untapped land and you get to draw a card.

  • Displacement Wave : I included a single copy of this card because 1) I actually own it and 2) a little disruption never hurts.

Suggested alternative sorcery card:

And I chose one creature for the deck:

  • Stuffy Doll: First, it's a cheap card to buy. Second, it's an alternative target for Fated Conflagration if the opponent doesn't have anything on the field or you still want to fry their face off.

Overall, you can easily build this deck for under $20 and it's fun to watch the spells fly on the cheap!

Updates Add

After more testing at my local store I've made the following changes:

Removing

  • Everything green: a third color just to ramp up the mana was an unnecessary risk.

Adding

  • Inferno: There was a lack of ammo in the deck, and it was especially hard to get rid of swarms of weenies, so I added this card.

  • Psychic Spiral: I added Nature's Spiral to return Spellweaver Volute or land to my hand if I accidentally milled it out, but seeing how fast I was milling myself and the opponent with Archive Trap, this card is a good addition to just mill more of their deck and replenish yourself without fear.

  • Looter il-Kor: It has shadow so it can evade a majority of creatures, and it allows me to filter through my deck each turn.

  • Nivix Guildmage: This guy can be super nasty with the intentions of this deck. He's cheap to cast, and for a mere four mana you can copy any of the free copies you cast and end the game faster. I wish I hadn't forgotten about him earlier.

  • Living Lore: This card flew under the radar for me until another player at my local store suggested that I add it in. Wow! This card is cheap to buy, can exile whichever card you need to use, it can be HUGE with whatever ammo you load into it, and it can still cast them for free! Amazing!

  • Wandering Fumarole: A brand new dual land card that can also become a 1/4 or 4/1 man land. A wonderful addition when you need a creature on the fly.

This deck started as a sub $20 budget deck, but with the recent changes it has increased to about $50. Frankly, it is still cheaper than many decks out there, and it is still a load of fun! The players at my store were in shock and confusion of what the deck was going to do until it fired, and it was a pleasant surprise for everyone!
