Warning: This is a Spike Deck. It is designed to win in a multiplayer setting. It is fun, so long as winning and fun are synonymous to you. It will not make you friends. Unless you are sitting across from Zur the Enchanter, you will be the archenemy at the table. You will be hated, and deserve it.
That said, I'd always wanted an overpowered EDH deck, so I came up with this. I'm typically a Johnny/Timmy, but every now and again it feels good to dominate a game or two. I wanted to keep it budget, as I only had about $50 to spend in addition to the cards I had laying around. Monocolor really helps budget, and I like to think this is very strong for a $100-150 deck. The "Maybeboard" is actually the "Moneyboard:" cards I'd add if funding were available.
The deck's general strategy is to lay some early mana rocks, land Azami and try to draw into one of the many combos. There's lots of counterspells here, most of which are quite cheap. As is typical of Combo EDH, the idea is to protect our combo pieces and prevent others from winning the game; you don't have to counter everything in sight.
Infinite Combos:
Azami, Lady of Scrolls + Mind Over Matter: Draw using Azami, pitch a card to untap Azami, repeat. This gets any card in your deck. Get
Laboratory Maniac
, then draw out to win. A leveled up
Enclave Cryptologist
will do in case Azami gets tucked.
Temple Bell + Mind Over Matter: Everyone draws their deck. You have Guile, so you can keep pitching and then drawing it back to prevent decking yourself. Note that Guile does actually hit the graveyard, so watch out for hate when doing this. Blightsteel Colossus or Darksteel Colossus would avoid this problem for a little extra cash.
Deadeye Navigator + Peregrine Drake: Infinite Mana. Eventually I want to replace this with
Palinchron
and another mana doubler (Extraplanar Lens,
Gauntlet of Power
).
Sigil Tracer
+ Another Untapped Wizard + Reality Spasm: Reality Spasm for 5, targeting Sigil Tracer, the other Wizard, and 3 lands. Tap the lands for 3 mana, spend two and tap the Wizards to copy (floating one mana). Keep the same targets, let the copy resolve, and repeat. Each time nets you a mana. With Sigil Tracer and three other Wizards, Turnabout will work too. Nykthos, Shrine to Nyx and 5 devotion can reduce the initial cost as well. Meletis Charlatan can substitute for Sigil Tracer if need be, though Turnabout isn't an option this way.
Illusionist's Bracers + Aphetto Alchemist + Seat of the Synod: Infinite Mana. Also works with any mana rock instead of Seat of the Synod. Also works with an animated Faerie Conclave. Also works with Nykthos, Shrine to Nyx, 5 devotion, and [[Captain of the Mists].
Other Synergies:
Captain of the Mists
is an experiment. I count 15 other humans, which means I should be able to get a good chain going with Nykthos in play. This might be too cute for a Spike deck though.
Diviner's Wand
can make commander damage through Azami viable late game. It also turns infinite mana into infinite draw, which is itself a win condition.
Tutors:
Expedition Map usually grabs Nykthos, Shrine to Nyx, but can complete the Aphetto Alchemist combo if need be.
Ethereal Usher
gets Mind Over Matter most of the time, but can also set up
Walk the Aeons
.
Long-Term Plans again usually gets Mind Over Matter, but is flexible. It's instant, so tutoring a counter spell, draw three through Azami, and counter is conceivable.
Vedalken AEthermage is situational. Recovering an Azami tuck is one option. Late game, grabbing Archaeomancer to set up infinite time with
Walk the Aeons
is an option.
Muddle the Mixture gets a missing piece of the Aphetto Alchemist + Illusionist's Bracers combo. Also Cyclonic Rift if you need to reset the board.
