With Dark Ascension around the corner, the graveyard is going to be a huge resource (have you seen Secrets of the Dead? Burning Vengeance will be huge!). You can counter that with a few card, the best being Nihil Spellbomb . Unfortunately, its an artifact and could mess up your Shape Anew (Although that could be helpful at times). Another option is Purify the Grave . Could you find a slot for them in the sideboard?

I'm probably missing something here, but why even have green in here? The obvious strategy is using Shape Anew on the Golem tokens to get the Blightsteel out. Couldn't you just run white/Blue and sprinkle in some control and blockers while waiting for the combo? What am I missing as far as the green? I like the idea of this deck. Definite +1.

So it can keep up with aggro decks with green you can drop turn 3 blight...without it is turn 4.

I'm in love with this deck, but it's sad when Shape Anew doesn't turn up. Think it's worth putting in Forbidden Alchemy ?

I'd say [Champion of the Parish] >[Doomed Traveler], my reasoning is very simple.

  1. They ramp themselves if you play more than one
  2. They get bigger if you play anybody who makes a golem
  3. They work well with your [Hero of Bladehold] from the sideboard
  4. Even alone they can become a real threat if your opponent removes a lot of your other stuff, they quickly become a good beater
  5. In rare situations, your first game if you play against red they might blow some of their burn on your champ instead of something more important, which can be really beneficial to you.

With Champion's I actually might build and start playing this, I've found since Innistrad my Blue/White Venser control has become too slow to meet the metagame and I've been looking for a new list to build on that won't destroy my budget. This looks fun, consistent, and relatively affordable.

FNM went well. I got the dream hand several times and got blightsteel out early. He got O-ringed and Fiend Hunter 'd a couple of times, but usually when he hits the field people start scooping up their cards. Won soundly against UB control/infect, goblins, RG wolves, W humans. My loss was to UW control, and I got whooped.

I've watched this deck for awhile, digesting it, and the one thing i just can't quite agree with is your 12 one-drops. I understand the reasonings for consistency, and ramping up, but the chances of drawing one-drops on turn 4+ is too high... its kind of a waste to draw card:Avacyn's Pilgrim on turn 5, right? I REALLY like the deck, and I occasionally test against it, but I just feel like this might be worth reanalyzing.

I definately agree with the comments above on your current mana sitituation and would have to you agree you should -4 Glacial FortressMTG Card: Glacial Fortress and +4 Seachrome CoastMTG Card: Seachrome Coast to ensure your land is untapped on turns 2 and 3 which is when your deck works its magic. Also I'm not too sure about the Doomed TravelerMTG Card: Doomed Traveler in this deck. It seems kind of out of place in this deck unless you're just using it as a chump block. But you definately don't need 12 one drops. I would cut it for card draw to keep your hand full of goodies if they deal with your Blightsteel ColossusMTG Card: Blightsteel Colossus and you run out of steam for late game. Try cutting the Doomed TravelerMTG Card: Doomed Traveler and run a set of Think TwiceMTG Card: Think Twice to keep your hand full late game.

+1 I played against your deck with my U/W control deck and went 2-1 against it. Check it out. http://tappedout.net/mtg-decks/anti-wolf-runupdated/

I do like this deck. I think I looked at it a while ago and actually really liked the bant take on it. The ramping and along with the splicers was a great idea. I actually would like to put birds in to my deck, but just can't find the room right now.

Any +1 which does make number 140. Very Nice. Also cool idea on the bait and switch idea.

I really like your deck; in fact, I always use it to test mines. : )

+1 from me for it's my favorite standard deck right now.

Could you give me some advice with my deck please ? I'm trying as hard as I can to make a zombie deck for FNM. Here's the link: deck:night-of-the-dead-kill-then-raise

I just wanted to let you know that with Dark Ascension you can have twice the chance to cheat out Blightsteel ColossusMTG Card: Blightsteel Colossus if you also include Call to the KindredMTG Card: Call to the Kindred in this deck. Just throw it on a golem token!

Gratz on the deck, getting pretty popular.

As Mpz5 can tell you I hate Golems with a passion, but this deck still looks pretty fun.

Thanks Leaf :) I haven't done much with it recently as I've been on a heavy control kick. Might revisit it again but seems like we're moving more towards werewolves and such these days.

If you don't mind, I borrowed a couple of these ideas for a similar deck I had built. Mine was U/W, and I liked the idea of splashing green. I needed a little mana ramp to speed up early game. +1 from me for sure.

Question though, what do you do when you end up drawing the Blightsteel ColossusMTG Card: Blightsteel Colossuss on the first few turns? Do you just scrap the Shape AnewMTG Card: Shape Anew plan and go for Golem fun?

What do you do when you are up against a haunted humans deck? I played my deck Master Craftsmen, which is very similar to yours last week, and even with Blightsteel ColossusMTG Card: Blightsteel Colossus, was too overwhelmed by the number of Human and Spirit tokens and lost. Do you have a good answer?

March 6, 2012 9:31 a.m.

shawning says... #21

Wing SplicerMTG Card: Wing Splicer + Blade SplicerMTG Card: Blade Splicer.

Haunted Humans are just pretty hard to beat in general...I usually just out paced them with this deck. I haven't played this deck in quite awhile though.

Forgive me, but I'm too lazy to have read over all of these comments. Regardless, I've seen a deck like this, only cooler.

Although expensive, the player used the card Venser, the SojournerMTG Card: Venser, the Sojourner. With Venser's +2, He would bounce any extra splicers he had, such that he would get more golem tokens every turn. It's an expensive upgrade to your deck, but goodness me would it ever be cool. :)

shawning says... #23

No worries arsonisfun. Originally I thought about him. The reason he is not here is because he is far too slow. Many people suggest him but there is no room and honestly my games rarely make it to turn 5. I've even played this version against other versions I've seen but this one is faster. Thanks for the suggestion at any rate :)

I also added Venser, the SojournerMTG Card: Venser, the Sojourner to my version of this deck. His +2 works great for the reason @arsonisfun mentioned, but it's also a great way to remove pesky enchentments that end up on Blightsteel ColossusMTG Card: Blightsteel Colossus. Best of all, because of the mana ramp, you can Shape AnewMTG Card: Shape Anew to the Blightsteel on turn 3, let him recover from summoning sickness, then on turn 4 first main phase, drop Venser, activate his -1, and swing away with an 11/11 infect, unblockable. Not necessary, but way fun.

shawning says... #25

@cryptichorror yea I liked his -1 ability but I'd rather drop a Wing SplicerMTG Card: Wing Splicer on turn 4 anyway. Honestly I'm revisiting this deck at the moment doing some restructuring. One of the major things I liked about this deck is its ability to change the deck entirely after sideboarding. I pulled out Doomed TravelerMTG Card: Doomed Traveler and put in Rampant GrowthMTG Card: Rampant Growth which after I spent all night thinking about it I don't like. Right now I'm back to the drawing board working through it one CMC phase at a time. I've believed since I built this deck that it has potential, but was unwilling to spend the time to make sure it didn't have a "if I play against this deck/card I lose" situations. One thing I KNOW I want to do is be able to side Blightsteel ColossusMTG Card: Blightsteel Colossus and Shape AnewMTG Card: Shape Anew out for something else that still has synergy. I'd also really like some control in this deck but I'm unwilling to base the mana base around IslandMTG Card: Islands. :(

Thanks for the feedback gang! I will hopefully have something better up in a few days to try moving this deck forward.
