Sideboard


Budget (under $150 at time of making) monowhite humans deck! General theme: Spam humans and destroy opponents!

This is my first real Modern deck that I'd like to make, and I want it to be as competitive as possible without shelling any super high amounts of cash for it (not necessarily very high income). Specific things I would like opinions on are in the Maybeboard, but if you check out the rest of the deck and sideboard and have a tip or question or comment or two, feel free to leave it in the comment section below, along with a friendly +1!

Champion of the Parish is, hands down, the most aggressive turn one play. I won't go so far as to say that he is the best card in the deck (Gideon, Battle-Forged is pretty damn good too) but I definitely want to play a Champion turn one. Every other creature pumps him up by at least +1/+1, and with the potential for multiple creatures a turn, he gets huge fast. Possibly the fastest game-ending creature, size-wise. So yeah, running four, hopefully playing one on turn one, dropping another on turn 2 with a friend is a great play (Kytheon, Hero of Akros   is a good choice), wouldn't cut them for the world.
Kytheon, Hero of Akros   is the most powerful card in the deck. His aggressive as heck body is great in the early game, and he's even good on defense with his indestructible ability. But, of course, those features are mot even the point of the card. When he flips into Gideon, Battle-Forged, he becomes a huge, indestructible beater who can take some attention off of me, can force problematic creatures to attack into me, and also gives pseudo-vigilance and indestructible to my best creatures (here's looking at you, Glory-Bound Initiate). I only have two because once he sticks he's hard to get rid of, and I don't really want multiples.
Oh, Soldier of the Pantheon. A solid aggressive one-drop, to be sure, but in most cases he really isn't that impressive. He can't be killed by Abrupt Decay and the like, and gains me a little life off of them as well, but honestly, if a better one-drop came along, this guy would be the first card cut. I only have three because he's not terribly exciting.
It's always a little weird to me when a Standard card is good enough to play in a competitive modern deck. It's a little weirder when that card is a common. Thraben Inspector is that card. She is the least aggressive creature in the whole deck, but she is still a creature with hella synergy with the rest of the deck, and she can be decent on defense, if I'm forced into that (usually if I'm forced onto defense I've already lost). Her main power comes from her clue token. As anyone who has been around for Standard for the past year would know, Thraben Inspector's one mana access to a clue token can do some pretty big things. It's this deck's only access to card draw, so despite being a one mana card, she's one of my best midrange cards, for the longevity she provides. Her utility makes her worth having 4 of.
Consul's Lieutenant fought for a spot in this deck. It looks small if you just look at the body, and the first strike isn't bad. Once it gets renowned, though, it is an intense boardwide buff that stacks on top of Honor of the Pure and Thalia's Lieutenant. All those can make even a 1/1 creature pack some serious punch.
Glory-Bound Initiate is my favorite card so far from Ahmonket. With the help of a Thalia's Lieutenant or Honor of the Pure he is easily a 5/5 lifelinker swinging in on turn 3. This is great damage, and the lifegain can really put me ahead, especially against other aggro decks. Even without exerting him, he has pretty high base power and can still chunk the opponent for quite a bit. There might not be many ways to untap him once he's exerted, but Gideon, Battle-Forged's +1 does it, and Glory-Bound Initiate is a great target for it; when he's indestructible he's a great blocker. I love the little fella so much, his benefits are so great, so I run a full playset.
Thalia, Guardian of Thraben is a lot of peoples' least favorite card to see across the table in this deck. She has a decent aggressive body, but her ability screws over sooo many decks. I run 12 non-creature spells in the main board myself, which is pushing it a little, but I know that almost every deck I play against will have a huge tempo setback the moment she resolved on the field. That's worth playing her regardless of the difficulties she gived me.
Thalia's Lieutenant is my favorite two-drop when I have a full field. He acts as a pseudo-anthem for all my little guys, which is absolutely great, like another 4 copies of Honor of the Pure. He's also a great turn 2 play immediately following a Champion of the Parish, but in general, I like to hold onto him and use him in later turns for maximim effect.
Oho, everyone loves a little bit of "every creature on your side of the field is essentially indestructible/unblockable for only one mana." That's what we get from Brave the Elements. I mean, it only affects one color, but that's not a huge drawback when it comes to the possibilities of what this card is capable of. The benefits are endless, so I run four.
