As the name suggests, this deck has Squadron Hawk, Lotleth Troll, and Varolz, the Scar Striped present in its build. However, there is so much more going on than just scavenge!
The main goal of the deck is aggro with some disrupting seeing as how this deck takes a little longer than most modern decks to swing for game.
The aggro dimension is mostly 1) Lotleth Troll discarding 3 Squadron Hawks, Death's Shadow, and/or Hunted Horror. An Additional aggro side is 2) Varolz, the Scar Striped scavenging Death's Shadow, Hunted Horrow, or Desecration Demon. Thirdly if all else fails and the pieces don't align, 3) Desecration Demon and/or Squadron Hawk swing in the air with Vault of the Archangel giving them deathtouch lifelink.
The disruption side to things here is threefold, 1) Thoughtseize for hand advantage 2) Hero's Downfall and Desecration Demon for creature removal, Hero's Downfall also kills off pesky Liliana's and any other planeswalker. Also Putrefy to take care of regenerate creatures and artifacts. And lastly, 3) Abrupt Decay for everything else that couldn't get hit by the rest.
Besides just the obvious disruption and aggro the deck also has a couple side effects that come in handy; the first being 1) massive life gain with Vault of the Archangel in order to counter the general slowness of the deck. As it is midrange aggro, the deck is vulnerable to burn and fast aggro, so the life gain helps disrupt the opposing deck. Secondly, the deck deals a lot of damage to itself, and you may say why have so many shocks, fetches, and thoughtseizes? Well with Death's Shadow, if nothing else I can pop him out right as the deck stalls if I don't hit my draw cards, which brings me to the last alternative strategies in the deck for utility, 3) Draw. I placed Read the Bones in the deck for three valuable reasons, 1) it scrys to before drawing, 2) it draws two for three mana, which is the mana I should have as I stall out, and 3) It hits my life so I can play Death's Shadow as a little bigger, a little faster.
