Maybeboard

I was looking at building a budget Uril, the Miststalker deck and was adding Sram, Senior Edificer as a great card draw card. Then it occurred to me that Sram could be a great budget commander. Sure, his stats are laughable and he can't protect himself but I figured if I could pack the deck with Auras and Equipment it could be a fun and playable budget deck. Never has a legendary threat had such a non-threatening creature type! Beware the advisor!

Our ramp is pretty standard for a budget deck. Sol Ring is too cheap and too good not to play. Cultivator's Caravan may not be the best ramp we can play but it does replace itself with Sram on the board. If you have a copy of Land Tax you should play it. In a mono-white deck running 30+ Plains you can use it to hit all your land drops and thin your deck. Hint: take all three every time. I tend to think of Sigarda's Aid as ramp because casting our auras and equipment as flash might be relevant at times but we're mostly looking to alleviate the pain of paying equip costs. Sword of the Animist is absolutely amazing even if it's one of the more expensive cards in the deck.
The nice thing about a mono-colored deck is you can run a fair number of colorless utility lands but due to budgetary constraints not many are listed here. I would consider adding Inventors' Fair if you have a copy along with Reliquary Tower. It probably goes without saying you should put in Serra's Sanctum if you happen to have one just laying about.
Some of the exceptions to our all aura/equipment guideline comes in this section. All the usual budget suspects are here including Divine Reckoning, Fell the Mighty, and the worst of the lot Mass Calcify. The first two are great in many situations but Mass Calcify in a world of 4 color commander decks seems a little weak. Feel free to throw in Wrath of God or Winds of Rath if you have a copy.
Our only instant comes in the form of Dispatch which is a great budget option but you could run Path to Exile or Swords to Plowshares in addition to or en lieu of what follows. The rest of our removal comes in enchantment form although not all of them are auras. Nevermore is a pet card of mine and I like aiming it at hexproof commanders but if this feels unfair or unpopular in your group go ahead and cut it. Oblivion Ring and Quarantine Field are just too strong not to run even if they don't draw us a card. The rest of the removal are aura's of which there are many to choose from in white but I would like to call out Faith's Fetters as it pumps Sram and removes a creature from the battlefield and draws us a card. Suppression Bonds is also excellent as it targets a nonland permanent.
We need to protect our fragile advisor here and ourselves so there are a lot of these cards maybe even too many. We can't play spells granting us shroud as that would keep us from continuing to build up Sram. As a result, we are playing Swiftfoot Boots and Mask of Avacyn and if you have a copy of Champion's Helm then play it.

There are a lot of white auras granting protection of one kind or another so feel free to substitute for what you have or prefer. I would like to point out the two non-aura spells in this section. Sigil of the Empty Throne adds some tokens to our board we can sacrifice to edict effects and Sphere of Safety is bound to be good in a deck with over 30 enchantments.

It's worth noting there are other ways to make a token or two some in the form of an aura but they are fairly weak. Luminarch Ascension is likely to be better than the sigil in most scenarios so you should run it if you got it.

Darksteel Plate would be an auto-include if available even though we have other ways to become indestructible.

These cards grant keyword abilities or reasonable power/toughness boosts. We play 4 lifelink or lifelink-like effects here because of Sunbond and the rest are just value aura/equipment cards granting evergreen abilities, evasion, and so on. In this area you could play the swords series, Daybreak Coronet, Celestial Mantle, Batterskull, Basilisk Collar and so on.
How do we win? Well we play cards that scale with the board state like Armored Ascension, Ethereal Armor, Sage's Reverie, Strata Scythe and Helm of the Gods or allows us to turn mana into power and toughness as in Daily Regimen. Grafted Exoskeleton is incredibly strong but if you can't bring yourself to play an infect card then chop it out. Double your output with with Battle Mastery or Fireshrieker. Combine Sunbond with any of the ways we have to gain lifelink and our intrepid advisor will be impossible to ignore.

I'm not running Empyrial Armor because without Reliquary Tower and Thought Vessel (which are relatively costly in a budget deck) it just doesn't seem good enough and gets worse if you manage to play out your hand.

There are some other great win cards that could be played if budget is less of an issue like Quietus Spike and Eldrazi Conscription

I have a copy of Emeria Shepherd in the deck as our budget get back in the game card. I think Sun Titan, Retether, and Replenish would all be good replacements or additions to your get back in the game kit. Even the lowly Mine Excavation might do in a pinch.

Obviously Open the Armory is too good and cheap not to run in this deck. There are other good tutors but they are either awkward and cheap or good and expensive. Enlightened Tutor, Idyllic Tutor, and the Stonehewer Giant would be great in the deck and give us a better shot at hitting our hexproof/indestructible cards. However, Sram is usually drawing us so many cards we can just hope to run into them naturally as we draw out our deck.

I'll list some alternate cards in the maybeboard but in my testing Sram can be a blast often simply because he draws us so many cards. It's fun to play and can be built for only $30-40 in this form. Nearly half the cards in the deck will draw us an additional card if Sram is on the board!
