I like the reference, but it's not the best because there are no angels, and there isnt speed either so it doesn't make sense

Maybe a little less lands?

If you plan on using cipher, I would recommend making Paranoid Delusions a four-of. They're incredibly cheap (as in, like less than a dollar), so that shouldn't be too much of a problem. Another cipher spell that could be incredibly useful is Hands of Binding , it should go a long way toward slowing your opponent down while you mill the crap out of them. I would also consider adding another Tome Scour and at least one (preferably two) Traumatize , just to help with your mill win condition. Also, to help make sure that your ciphered spells get through, maybe look into adding 4x Deathcult Rogue . He isn't unblockable, per se, but, generally speaking, your opponent won't have anything that can block him. Also, I think that Rogue's Passage would go beautifully in this deck.

I would recommend removing Dimir Charm . While I suppose it's not the worst card out there, I believe that there are much better alternatives for all of its effects, such as Doom Blade and Syncopate . Also, Duskmantle Guildmage , in my opinion, isn't terribly effective, but he may perform better for you, considering you're ciphering some of your mill spells. Finally, I'm kind of on the fence when it comes to Soul Ransom . I understand that it sort of pulls double duty by forcing your opponent to sac one of their major threats, and allows you to draw, but... I dunno. If you're looking for other removal and draw spells, maybe look into Doom Blade and Opportunity , respectively. I have a similar feeling toward Whispering Madness , it really requires you to be top decking or to have nothing useful in your hand in order to be worth casting.

And, no, don't run any fewer lands.

Overall, though, it sounds like a fun deck. I'm actually working on putting together a cipher deck comprised of the cards I took out of my mill deck when I switched from Dimir to Esper mill.

Thanks heaps Proteus, I think I'll be getting rid of the discard part of the deck, it really is a pain having a deck based on the different ways of playing!

Hahaha! I don't know why, but MagicWhovian's comment just cracked me up!

In all seriousness though, Jace, Memory Adept would be a great addition. I understand not having the money to buy cards (I'm in that position myself at the moment), but he's pretty cheap. I think I paid like $7.00 for my second one, and that was on a whim at a local game store, so it could probably be had for less online. Whenever you have the cash to spare, I highly recommend picking up one or two.

I like Invisible Stalker , but he's out of rotation now, I'm guessing. What about Tormented Soul ? I find him incredibly useful. I've had opponents blow him up instead of Mirko Vosk because of the annoying cipher effects I had on him. Also, I hate Grisly Spectacle . It costs too much and two cards just isn't enough to care about. Doom Blade costs less and will get the job done most of the time. If that doesn't work, Murder still costs one less. Also, where are your Jace's Phantasm s and Mind Sculpt s? I can understand swapping Mind Sculpt for Tome Scour (or Breaking), but Jace's Phantasm is cheap and will always be a 5/5 flyer if you're playing the deck correctly.

I'd probably add all those cards except every single one, except for Doom Blade , is rotating out. :(
And I'm not adding doom blade because I just can't walk past Grisly Spectacle 's mill effect! XD

"I'd probably add all those cards except every single one, except for Doom Blade..." Typo????

Is two more mana worth them milling two cards?? Warped Physique is still better than Grisly Spectacle , as it will deal with most creatures for 2 mana and then you can cast a Tome Scour for one more and do more for less than Grisly Spec. If you're keeping it for flavor reasons, then that's different. I enjoy themed decks more than power gaming decks, so if that's the reason, more power to ya.

Also, hate to annoy anyone, but I recently made my account here. I'm creating a casual/modern discard deck called Strip the Mind, and would appreciate any contributions. As I said above, I care more about theme than power gaming (i.e. if I am running an Orzhov deck I would use Basilica Guards rather than Angelic Wall simply due to flavor reasons, despite Angelic Wall's slight superiority)so keep that in mind! Thanks!

Nice budget deck, I have a very similar deck. I do think that Grisly Spectacle is worth every mana. Your deck has a low enough CMC average to make up for the extra 2 mana for Grisly Spectacle , not to mention, later in the game when you play this spell(when you'll have extra mana anyway), the more likely you will be destroying your opponents late game finisher creature. I gotten more than a few Kalonian Hydra with this for a 16 card mill effect. That's worth an extra 2 mana. It remains efficient as long as you destroy a creature with 5 or more toughness.

I'm also a firm believer in Jace's Phantasm as an alternate win con.

What are your thoughts on Fireshrieker ?

Very cool deck, I doubt it needs any real help.

MagicWhovian says... #21

I'd add Jace's Phantasm but he isn't in standard any more. :(

As for Fireshrieker it makes the cipher effect, mirko vosk's effect and Nightveil Specter 's effect trigger twice and gives me more life from Daggerdrome Imp !

Imo you should cut the Dark Favor and another Psychic Strike is a must. You should probably add two more Breaking and drop the Doom Blade s (I have never found those to be particularly good unless they come from my sideboard). Sideboard the Grisly Spectacle for large creature decks like Gruul or other green decks. And finally, Tormented Soul should definitely be in here for your ciphers. If you want you can take a look at my deck Shifting Thoughts.

Your right about Dark Favor , anvildust, but I really like the card. I'll have to think about it. For me Doom Blade is useful as most decks in standard are R/G. Also, Grisly Spectacle is useful late game so I'm gonna keep that to, and Tormented Soul isn't in standard anymore.
