Author's Introduction
When I started playing MTG a month ago, I bought a Dragon's Maze intropack. It was an Orzhov deck, and granted -- it didn't take me far, but I was able to bite off more than I could chew. I loved the beatdown and the control elements of it, and immediately spent a shitload of money to make that deck better.
Fast forward two weeks later, I wanted to build my own budget deck. My friends have been playing since the Kamegawa block, and they had buckets of cards to spare. With their help, I was able to create a budget Rat-Discard deck. I absolutely loved it, Distress (imo one of the cheapest discard cards ever made) made sure threats would never get on the board and I supplemented it with cards like Mind Rot and
Ravenous Rats
. I'd beat down with
Pack Rat
and
Desecration Demon
so that they would be forced to put down defenders and Shrieking Affliction could do its job. I fucking loved it.
The only problem with that deck was that it was Modern. I'm not saying that Modern is a terrible format -- what I'm saying is that my Rat Deck wouldn't stand a shitstain's chance against other Modern decks. Which brings us to this deck! Hopefully it'll stand a chance against other Standard decks, but please go on easy on me! It's my first Standard deck, and I highly encourage criticism and suggestions!
How The Deck Works;
21 Lands. Pretty standard, wouldn't you say? Thats me being generous to my deck because I used to run 18 Lands. The reason being, you dont really need that much lands to play this deck efficiently. Every turn youll have a play to make, be it during their turn or yours.
The point of the deck is to keep you at card advantage as frequently as possible. Theyll wish they hadnt played a counter spell for your creatures when 2 Shrieking Afflictions come out of nowhere and hit them for 12 in the next two turns.
Most of the time 4-6 lands are more than enough to sustain your play. More would definitely not hurt though. That's why you have Deathrite Shaman in there. Most likely, your opponent will be discarding at least one land at times. Use the opportunity to bring those lands back on your side of the field.
Keep an extra 2 lands ready for a well timed removal spell just in case a big creature pops up. Once
Pack Rat
comes into play in your battlefield, you will have an unending supply of creatures that cant be countered by counter target spell cards like
Dissolve
or Cancel.
The reason being his ability; discarding a card from your hand and creating a copy of
Pack Rat
is an absolute surefire way of getting another creature down (and you can even do it during their turn to chump block if necessary).
Follow up the
Pack Rat
beatdown with a Deathrite Shaman combo. If Deathrite Shaman is on the battlefield, you essentially never have to discard lands, as you can bring them right back up on your side of the battlefield. The combo also works for creatures and sorceries you chose to discard with
Pack Rat
.
Liliana's Reaver helps you with the discarding and
Desecration Demon
is well
Desecration Demon
. Every black deck should have him! Maybe Im just biased, because its the first rare I bought
Regardless,
Desecration Demon
is a good card and a must have for any Black Beatdown deck.
Card filtering is also a small feature of this deck, as you have two Read the Bones and Erebos, God of the Dead to draw the cards you want faster at the cost of your own life. Temple of Silence is there because I like to scry. I like knowing my options before I draw.
TLDR;
Play aggressively, force them to get their hands down as quick as possible. Then, limit their choices; make them keep 2 cards in hand all the time with the looming threat of your bitchin enchantment. Do these and the game will be yours.
PS: Board clearers are your absolute bane.
