This is a fun one. I decided to build mostly because I'm on a budget and
Runaway Steam-Kin
is my favorite card from Guilds. I've never built a Mono Red deck before, but I'm enjoying this one and it does fairly well at FNM.
The main gameplan is to get
Arclight Phoenix
in grave and dump some cantrips. The late game is to drop
Bedlam Reveler
. Pretty obvious I know.
The Izzet build is objectively better, but
Scalding Tarn
s are out of range for me right now. This version does have one advantage.
Runaway Steam-Kin
is super fun and an amazing combo extender. Get one or two out and you can cast half your deck.
Otherwise, the deck is pretty straightforward. Goldfish it a lot and you'll get it down pat.
As far as the side deck goes:
Blood Moon
is an obvious choice and easy to bring in against greedy three color decks and obviously Tron.
Chandra, Torch of Defiance
is your solution to any deck trying to shut down your attackers.
Abrade
is one of my all time favorite cards because it's so flexible. Bring it in against creature decks or Affinity/Hardened Scales. It also lets you get past a
Damping Sphere
or the rare
Chalice of the Void
on one post board.
Dragon's Claw
is for Burn decks.
Anger of the Gods
is a fun one since it can be used against a lot of decks depending on the build. Bring it in against Zoo or token decks, but especially against Dredge for the exile effect.
Tormod's Crypt
Speaking of Dredge... This is your early game answer and especially good since its an instant speed disruption (just ask my friend that plays Dredge who hates me for it). It's also one of your only ways to interact with Storm Gifts.
Living End
,
Tarmogoyf
,
Snapcaster Mage
and
Search for Azcanta
also don't appreciate it.
I plan on talking about this deck on MagicGatheringStrat over on YouTube soon, so look forward to that. Thanks for reading!
