Storm of Spores

Inspiration

When I was creating this deck I wanted something that would rival the speed, ferocity, and overwhelming force of the Temur. My first challenge was moving from to the unfamiliar territory of . Thankfully the Abzan readily welcomed me and graciously accepted my creatures and spells making the transition that much easier.

Playing the deck

Ideally a starting hand would have 3x-4x lands, a Sol Ring and the one drop Utopia Mycon. Along with Blood Artist who can become a win condition in the mid to late game if your opponent decides to wipe your field. Another great choice is playing Squirrel Nest which will start spawning creatures early, giving you a defense and more importantly trigger ETB effects from cards like Cather's Crusade. Make sure to take advantage of the deck's lifegain abilities,Whip of Erebos gives your creatures lifelink allowing for +1/+1 counters to be distributed with Archangel of Thune. As for your three drops Champion of Lambholt is fantastic because once you start swarming the field with creatures you will have a very powerful champion and your creatures essentially become unblockable. Courser of Kruphix is another fantastic turn three play who helps thin out the deck and leads into a turn four play of Oracle of Mul Daya or Corpsejack Menace. By turn five and onward your main goal should be to get Ghave, Guru of Spores + Sigil Captain plus Ivy Lane Denizen and if it isn't already get Ashnod's Altar out onto the field to begin swarming the field with creatures.

After this is completed focus on supporting your creatures with enchantments like Doubling Season, Primal Vigor, and Parallel Lives. These enchantments are nasty because they double your counters and token creatures. Another great enchantment is Whip of Erebos which can be used to bring back creatures from the graveyard and it gives all of your creatures lifelink.

Creature support is also important. Use Nylea, God of the Hunt to give your creatures trample and Avacyn, Angel of Hope to give all of your permanents indestructible. Abzan Falconer is great for building your defenses since it will give all creatures on your side of the field flying provided that they have a +1/+1 counter. Archetype of Courage is also a fantastic support card since it gives your creatures first strike and your opponents creatures cannot gain first strike.

Lastly, make sure you are never caught off guard with Seedborn Muse. It's basically Prophet of Kruphix without the ability to cast creature spells from your hand.

Infinite Mana / Infinite Tokens

Ghave, Guru of Spores + Sigil Captain + Ashnod's Altar

  1. Tap a land for Pull a +1/+1 counter off of Ghave,Guru Of Spores to create a 1/1 saproling using Ghave's first activated ability. Saproling comes into play with an additional +1/+1 counter thanks to Sigil Captain or Juniper Order Ranger.

  2. Tap a land, pull that +1/+1 counter off of saproling to create another saproling using Ghave, Guru of Spores first activated ability. That saproling also comes into play with a +1/+1 counter on it because of Sigil Captain or Juniper Order Ranger.

  3. Sacrifce the first saproling to Ashnod's Altar to add to your mana pool.

  4. Repeat

Infinite Damage

Mikaeus, the Unhallowed + Triskelion

  1. Triskelion is a 1/1 creature that gains +1/+1 and undying from Mikaeus, the Unhallowed. Because of Triskelion's ability he enters the battlefield with three +1/+1 counters. This makes Triskelion a 5/5 creature.

  2. Remove one counter from Triskelion, this makes him a 4/4 creature, hit target opponent.

  3. Remove two counters from Triskelion and target Triskelion for damage. What you have done here is made Triskelion a 2/2 creature with two damage counters on it causing Triskelion to die and undying to trigger once Triskelion dies.

  4. Triskelion comes back to the battlefield as a result of undying. Triskelion is now a 6/6 creature. It receives a +1/+1 counter and +1/+1 for being non-human from Mikaeus.

  5. Remove two counters from Triskelion to hit target opponent for two damage. Remove two counters from Triskelion and target itself.

  6. Repeat this process

Multiplication of the Swarm

Doubling Season + Primal Vigor , Parallel Lives,
Corpsejack Menace + Kalonian Hydra , Cathars' Crusade, Primordial Hydra, Hydra Broodmaster.

There is a lot to take in here and I will do my best to break it down. Basically, recursion is your friend and you will do wonderful things with it.

Doubling Season, Primal Vigor, and Corpsejack Menace all double counters. For example if a creature you control were to have a +1/+1 counter placed on it with these three cards in play it would receive 8 total counters instead.

Here's where things get interesting, Doubling Season and Primal Vigor also double tokens placed on the battlefield. Combine this with Parallel Lives and you have 7 more creatures added to the field for a total of 8 because you spawned one creature token.

Here is the main thing that ties it all together, Cathars' Crusade. Whenever a creature enters the battlefield put a +1/+1 counter on every creature you control. We just learned that we will be placing a total of 8 creatures onto the field every time we summon a creature token. That means there will be 8 triggers of the Doubling Season, Primal Vigor and Corpsejack Menace combo.

Now suppose you have placed one token on the field, perhaps a Saproling from Ghaves second ability. When the ability resolves, you would normally get 1 token . In this scenario, however, you would get 8 tokens. This triggers Cathars Crusades ability 8 times, and puts that many +1/+1 counters on each of them. Dont forget though that for each counter you would normally receive, you now receive 8 counters. This means that you get 64 65/65 creatures for the small price of one colorless mana and removing one counter from your commander, which was promptly replaced by 64 identical counters.

Now for even more craziness add Kalonian Hydra + Primordial Hydra into the mix. Kalonian Hydra enters the battlefield with four +1/+1 counters on it. With the Doubling Season, Primal Vigor and Corpsejack Menace combo, Kalonian Hydra enters the battlefield with 32 +1/+1 counters on it.

Now when Kalonian Hydra attacks it doubles the +1/+1 counters of all creatures on your side of the field. For the hydra, on it's first attack, you would add an additional 256 +1/+1 counters to it. For a grand total of 288 +1/+1 counters!

Primordial Hydra is capable of the same sort of thing. It enters the battlefield with X+1/+1 counters and doubles them at the beginning of your upkeep. With Kalonian Hydra attacking it won't take long for these two to become massive creatures.
