Spellweaver Helix came out shortly after I started playing MTG. I've always enjoyed making decks around cards that most people disregard as being useless or difficult. Spellweaver Helix was one of those cards I always wanted to try and I've finally gotten around to it. I made a couple of prototypes on here before deciding which deck to build. The burn deck was faster, but less exciting and a pretty common play style. While focusing on lots of Goblin Tokens was pretty fun, it was also much more costly to make and less diverse. Green mana ramp was cool and different, but it takes blue to really keep the deck flowing, so this is what I came up with. It still needs some tweaking, but it's built and pretty entertaining when it works correctly.
The deck is a bit slow to get going, so I use Fog Bank and Propaganda to slow my opponents down. Portent helps me get cards I need early on or mess with my opponent's deck too. Sift is the best draw card I found for the deck, as it digs deeper, and the discard effect can help with Spellweaver Helix.
A lot of the deck focuses in the land destruction effects of Molten Rain and Roiling Terrain. I chose these 2 for their added damage effects.
I mostly use spells to get creatures. Dragon Fodder lets me play a numbers game, while Act of Treason lets me use my opponent's creatures against them. Hypersonic Dragon fits the theme well since I only use sorcery spells anyway. (Though it's not as effective as I'd hoped. I think I'll be replacing him with Galvanoth to play more spells instead).
The real kicker in my creatures is Echo Mage. If I can get him to copy my spells, the land destruction or token production increases greatly. Plus he can help protect my field, depending on what my opponent may play that I could use against them.
Reminisce keeps recycling my spells, so I never run out of cards to play. I can also use it against my opponent if they play from their graveyard.
I need a playset of most spells to use Spellweaver Helix effectively, so Search the City seemed like a nice card to add. Plus it helps me chain my spells with Spellweaver Helix when I get another spell that I just played.
Jace, the Living Guildpact's first ability is like a cross between Portent and Sift, helping me to control my draw, but also possibly discarding a spell for use with Spellweaver Helix. His last ability is a better version of Reminisce, getting rid of my opponent's hand and graveyard, while recycling mine and restocking my hand.
NOTE: This deck can be a little confusing with the wording on some of the cards.
- Spellweaver Helix and Search the City state you have to play a CARD. A COPY doesn't count to trigger the effect of either. (Neither is a copy CAST, so it won't trigger certain abilities other cards have.)
- A spell has to be on the stack in order to be copied, so the copy goes on top of it and triggers BEFORE the spell you played.
- Spellweaver Helix copies a spell. While it is not a card, nor is it cast, it IS a spell. Echo Mage can therefore copy the copy played by Spellweaver Helix.
