Hello, and welcome my fellow Dark Elves! In this edition of budgeted decktechs, I will be looking at a some what overlooked card and doing my best to represent what this Commander can do respectively.
What I like about
Storrev, Devkarin Lich
is she has a basic ability that calls a few core mechanics to mind, but I am going to be focusing on using her to turn your graveyard into a proverbial Golgari Garden. Ramping out huge creatures that will be hard to remove when consistently returned with Storrev. She can provide some fuzz on which creatures of yours should be targeted by removal, combine her with a few sultry re-animation cards and you have yourself a Gravecrawling Hulk deck. She has some beef on the front end so lacing her up with some goodies to keep her swinging will provide you with all the threats you need from your graveyard. Now lets look at some of the bombs and tricks.
Bombs
-
Avatar of Might
an aggro counter to get even with damage and life totals.
-
Butcher of Malakir
is standing tall to throw hell at anyone eye-bawling your beautiful creatures.
-
Eldrazi Devastator
is another evasion bomb to pound in the damage and pull those removal spells your opponents hold onto.
-
End-Raze Forerunners
is battlefield trick card for finishing up if you have a field of elves or insects to work with.
-
Giant Adephage
because who doesn't love Apocalypse beetles? I know I do.
-
Krosan Tusker
finds a home with his cycle ability being able to get him buried and ready for a cheap throw later on.
-
Living Hive
is a vomit cast that just rolls out and onward until its final summation. Hurl it at anyone who gives you the stink eye.
-
Pelakka Wurm
can turn stuff back around last minute if you can keep him entering the battlefield. Although slow, he can correct fairly well as long as he gets to swing before making his trip through the dirt garden.
-
Plated Slagwurm
this card is sort of Timmy romance card for me, I remember getting to have this huge creature no one could touch. I'd just sit back and let my foes tremble before it. Letting its size stave off any aggression. Don't be a nerd like me. Hit them with it.
-
Scion of Darkness
this card art represents how I feel that you've made it this far without giving up on Storrev, reluctantly he also can cycle into the graveyard early. All those tiny little baby creatures your opponents have been chump blocking you with? Start swinging and they'll all be sniffing this demons goatee in no time.
-
Soul of the Harvest
is a big buddy ol' pal that rewards your tilling with more spells and lands to be played.
-
Symbiotic Wurm
is a card that leaves an subtle odor after a well placed removal spell, that will curl the nose hairs of any unfortunate Jesuits within range. He can flatten out and go wide to get around big creatures or provide enough chumps till he can be recast with Storrev.
-
Torgaar, Famine Incarnate
can balance the game back out, if throwing him out with
Savage Summoning
or
Gaea's Herald
doesn't wipe the smiles of their faces. Attacking with him on turn 4 will.
-
Ulamog's Crusher
Holy heck of a solid reprint, art looks great. Not forgetting this chunky boys
Annihilator 2 effect, the chaos he ensues is enough to give you time to slip an attack in with Storrev, who's been banking bombs left and right since we started.
-
Phyrexian Soulgorger
was a late add but, with a well timed
Rancor
I feel like him synergies well, and can be a consistent nuisance to your opponents. Its like
Rotting Regisaur
and
Gigantosaurus
had a baby that no one wants to talk about.
Re-Animation Effects and Tricks
-
Plague Witch
is a neat reprint card to get started with some tricks, getting cards tilled into the garden for later use.
Putrid Imp
serves a similar purpose.
-
Deadbridge Chant
is another good way to get a variety of delectably available cards to comb through with Storrev.
-
Corpse Connoisseur
is there to give Storrev special friends in your garden.
-
Mulch
/
Grisly Salvage
/
Jarad's Orders
can also put more selections in the garden for later use and ramp up for casting big creatures.
-
Gravewaker
/
Doomed Necromancer
/
Yavimaya Elder
are cards that can speed up your casting when you run dry. The problem with most ramp decks is you need selections and tons of card tempo to keep the flood coming. Use these guys to ease your anxiety with seeing so many cards sink into your graveyard.
-
Blood for Bones
/
Vigor Mortis
/
Unearth
are spells to help keep up with Storrev's garden. Sometimes you can overload your graveyard and have it looking awfully juicy for Hatebears. Stay on the ball and keep your goodies out of their reach best you can.
-
Treasured Find
/
Regrowth
/
Nature's Spiral
keep your ramp cards and other needed combo cards in reach.
-
Evolutionary Leap
is a fun card to keep working with Storrev, Its all about getting as much mana and cast-able creatures at your disposal. When your opponent sees you sacrificing a big threat they were about to remove, the games salinity is bound to tip sooner or later.
Mana Dorks
-
Elvish Archdruid
/
Joraga Treespeaker
and lots of other Elves pack this deck with a few other goodies like
Deathcap Cultivator
and
Leyline Prowler
.
These all exist to speed up your casting abilities to get your bombs off ASAP. This decks ability to turn around from being completely wiped is one of its strongest suits, so keep your vital components working for you pumping out mana to re-cast your board.
Notable Mentions
Summary
Well folks, that about sums up why I made this deck. Storrev is more often than not better off a late player than not. I think if this is the first Storrev deck you've seen or if you think that she is too bad to hold a serious Commander slot, you should try making one of your own. You may end up liking it. I did not however spend a lot of time researching the best budget bombs for this deck, so any suggestions are always welcome!
Thanks for taking the time to enjoy my project!
