The basic idea with this deck is to ramp with mana dorks into big/aggressive creatures (Smiters, Geists, etc.), make them obnoxiously large (Wolfir Silverheart, Sublime Archangel, Silverblade Paladin), and swing for massive amounts of damage with trample (Rancor). Even a Strangleroot Geist or Avacyn's Pilgrim can become a threat with Wolfir Silverheart or Sublime Archangel on the board. I have killed on turn 4 with this deck before (Avacyn's Pilgrim --> Loxodon Smiter --> Sublime Archangel, swing for 7 w/Smiter --> Silverblade Paladin, soulbonded to Sublime Archangel, swing for 16 flying damage --> game over), but the point is that this deck gets out of control really quickly.

As far as defense, the Oblivion Rings can remove threats, and the Faith's Shields are great protection against targeted removal. Protection from a color is an incredibly versatile benefit; remember, it can make the creature effectively unblockable too. If I'm playing against Control, I have Rootborn Defenses in my sideboard to deal with Supreme Verdicts (which are the greatest threat to my board presence). Garruk can be helpful with card draw; usually this deck wins pretty quickly, but it can stall out against control if the game goes on for a long time, so he's a good insurance policy.

Rest in Peace is great insurance for the reanimator decks that seem to be popular lately.
