Hey there. I am also working on an Ulrich list. Nothing solid yet but I found a foil on ebay for 2 bucks and its too shiny not to command something.

Ruric Thar, the Unbowed is the best "Spell-Whack" (never heard that term but I like it) that you can run in these colors.

The Dragonlair Spider produces 1/1 tokens that won't get any bonuses from your tribe and in the grand scheme of things aren't that intimidating. Most of the time it won't keep anyone from casting anything.

Damage to the face however? Well, now thats something that gives people pause. And sure you MAY take damage from it too but you know its coming and can play around it better. Chances are someone tries to take him out before your next turn, no surprise he eats removal quickly. Running him along with Gratuitous Violence is even more of a deterrent.

The best way I can tell you to start cutting cards is to cut cards that don't do anything when they hit the board first. Ulvenwald Mystics  Flip for example is decent on the backside but when he isn't transformed he's not worthy of a spot in the 100 in any deck.

There aren't enough Werewolves/Wolves that really are good enough on their own so you will have to make some tougher decisions eventually. Just try not to run bad cards for the sake of the tribe. It can still be a Werewolf/Wolf deck if you have a handful of random other creatures (which you do already).

Thanks! I agree with all of your suggestions and have adapted the deck accordingly. I cut a few low-mana werewolves like Reckless Waif and Hinterland Hermit, mostly because they were cards that lost a lot of their value past turn 3. As for Ulvenwald Mystics  Flip, I'm keeping it in for now mostly because it is a 1-mana regenerate in an Aggro deck, which has a lot of value even if he isn't always transformed. Also, a friend of mine suggested I move Kessig Cagebreakers and Wolfir Silverheart off of my sideboard and into my deck. What do you think? Thank you!

Kessig Cagebreakers is one of the best ways for a wolf tribal to get back in the game after a boardwipe. It can win games on its own if it hits an empty board with haste.

Wolfir Silverheart is one of my favorite wolvies. Its ability can create some really large threats to be sure. I usually target something that my opponents wouldn't normally waste a kill spell on. Spreading out the power as opposed to targeting my already big creatures.

I won't lie I haven't had a chance to test him in commander yet, he's in there but he's never seen play lol.

I like the deck a lot and I'm glad someone else is sticking up for the were-pups in the face of adversity! I run werewolves too and I know the challenges that come with them but it makes it worth while!

Based on my own play experience, I have a few suggestions for your deck:

The deck looks like it could use some more card draw in it. While this is a typical problem for Gruul, there are a few cards I think could help:

Lifecrafter's Bestiary
Shamanic Revelation
Rishkar's Expertise

These are 3 fairly popular draw support cards that I think can speed up your play even more.

You have a lot of solid ways to cheat creatures into play but I'll recommend a few more that I've tried/am planning to try:

Yisan, the Wanderer Bard
Yeva, Nature's Herald
Elvish Piper
Descendants' Path

One card that is really mean but definitely slows down spell casting is Price of Glory. You could also look at cards like Spellshock or Mana Barbs as well but they're risky. Pyrostatic Pillar and Eidolon of the Great Revel also fall into this category.

Dosan the Falling Leaf, Conqueror's Flail, and City of Solitude are 3 last cards I'll leave you with to dissuade spell casting.

My final suggestion would be to continue tweaking your mana base with more dual lands as your budget allows to improve overall consistency.

I dig the deck and wish you luck with your Howlpack!

Wizno: Thanks for the suggestions! For the draw engine, I would definitely agree with you. Throughout my playing it, my good starting hands start top-decking on turn seven. I had included Shamanic Revelation at first but took it out because it was sorcery-speed, which is no fun. I made this before Aether Revolt, so I haven't considered Rishkar's Expertise or Lifecrafter's Bestiary yet, both of which would be VERY viable(static early-game ability for Bestiary, or Rishkar's for spell advantage for less mana when you need to cast spells regardless of spell count).

For creature-cheats, these are solid suggestions, especially Yisan, the Wanderer Bard and Elvish Piper. Yeva, Nature's Herald would be great, but it's color specific, which puts a damper in things. As for Descendants' Path, I still can't decide. It's great, but the only drawback is that it filters all my artifacts and enchantments to the bottom of the deck(since the place on bottom is required). But the dilemma is that it's really low cost for good value. In your experience, how does it work in-game?

The problem with Price of Glory is that it affects me too, forcing me out of flash-cheats. The other spell-whacks I originally got rid of because they are all spells and apply to me, but I'm seeing more in-game applicability to board-wide effects for a borderline-aggro deck.

As for Conqueror's Flail, that is definitely going on the sideboard for getting rid of that pesky counter player.

Thanks for all your suggestions! Best of luck to you and your Kessig concoctions.

Wait! I though werewolves were only filthy half-breeds!

Question, are you taking this deck to some sort of schooling institution? Because that seems unethical and unnatural. Werewolves need to be kept away from our children and our schools! Werewolves are an abomination and deserve to be eaten by nobler creatures! Like hydras for example.

It's a great deck though, I actually really admire the fact that it's a very powerful deck that also allows everyone at the table to have fun. It's just such a shame that it's tribal inferior race. Oh well, I guess you did the best anyone could while working with a bunch of mutts.

I'm glad that my suggestions could be of help sanobanat0! I'm also realizing that my card draw needs even more upping since I'm burning through cards much faster than I anticipated. I may add in Sylvan Library and would recommend it to you as well (budget pending of course). Descendants' Path was actually quite helpful in the games I could get it out. I did lose out on a few cards but the ability to get another creature for free allowed me to free up mana for other instant speed interactions. So I would say it's worth a few test sessions to see how you like it. I will say the one downside about it that I don't like is it does specify that the spells are 'cast' from it so it doesn't allow your werewolves to flip for that turn.

Best of luck to you as well and happy hunting!

NathanTheNecromancer: Lesser men have always been baffled by ingenuity, and you already know where I think your hydras can stick their heads. But in all seriousness, I am also glad that it worked out, and I appreciate the input you gave me.

Wizno: Actually, now that you say it, Sylvan Library would be amazing! it would allow me to set up a draw for the next turn or two OR I could keep the cards in my hand if that would be better. For a card that works that well, I would be willing to shell out the 18 dollars to get it.

Here's some idea's you may not have considered. Obviously your meta-game is different than mine, but in my multi-player commander games, we get a lot of board wipes. As a result, I tend to ignore 'number of creatures you control' effects because they don't help much when you don't have any. Mana Echoes is cute but I think there are better uses of that card slot.

Genesis, and Loaming Shaman can help with graveyard recursion.

Bower Passage and Spidersilk Armor can help deal with flying creatures.

AEther Sting, Berserkers' Onslaught, Fervor, Gruul War Chant are all helpful combat spells.

Hand to Hand and Heat of Battle fit your theme and can work in your favor.

What about replacing the Alpha Brawl with Arena? The Alpha Brawl is a one-shot but you can use the Arena repeatedly.

I hope you like these suggestions. Good luck.
