Why wouldn't it?

TBH I'm not sure the ruling on the mechanics but wouldn't any multiple colored spell or effect not be able to do anything to Soldier of the Pantheon even if you control the effect and the soldier? While we're at it, I need help with some of the other rulings/mechanics. When I cast a spell that targets a heroic creature what triggers first? The spell or the heroic trigger? What if someone stacks Far / Away onto me casting a spell that triggers lets say Akroan Crusader ? Can I sacrifice the token or does it have to be the crusader?

October 10, 2013 6:37 p.m.

DannyG says... #4

The heroic triggers first, since it's said "when creature becomes a target of a spell" that also means that spell doesn't even need to ressolve for heroic to work.About Far / Away - only you can trigger heroic, so if opponent targets Crusader, there will be no token since heroic won't trigger.

No I mean if I cast lets say Titan's Strength onto Akroan Crusader and my opponent casts the away half of that card in respense to Titan's Strength and Akroan Crusader is my only creature on the field. Am I forced to sacrifice my Akroan Crusader ? Or can I sacrifice my token instead.

Ignore the part on saying that heroic triggers, when spell won't ressolve. It's just me thinking the wording was a bit different than it actually is. So the true statement is that heroic triggers before spell ressolve and that it can't be triggered by opponent's spells. Also I just asked a friend judge about Soldier and Anax and he said that protection won't prevent such effects as Anax heroic from happening.

In this case you have to sac Crusader, it's just simple stack thing. You cast your instant, and it gets on the stack, then heroic get's on the stack, then opp responses with Away which lands on top of the stack. It resolves first in the situation when there is no token, you sacrifice Crusader, then heroic trigger resolves next - you put token onto field, then Titan Strength last - it has no legal target so it goes to graveyard with no effect

I hate to flood infinitemana's comment stream here but I'm still not clear. I know the heroic effect triggers regardless of whether the spell resolves or not, but in that instance do I end up only being able to sacrifice my Akroan Crusader ? Also, to make it a bit more complicated, if I have lets say Akroan Crusader and Phalanx Leader on the field and cast Coordinated Assault targeting both of them. Do I get to choose the order in which things resolve allowing me to give the token a +1/+1 from Phalanx Leader making it a 2/2?

Ok, forget half of my last comment i was writing as you responded lol... thak you though.

I'm gonna repeat you Akroan Crusader + Far / Away case again:

  1. Titan's Strength is cast and goes on the stack

  2. Heroic triggers and goes on the stack (order is now Heroic -> Titan Strength)

  3. Opponent responses with Away, it goes on the stack (order Away -> Heroic -> Titan's)

  4. Spells resolve according to stack order, so Away goes first, it forces you to sac a crature, you have only one which is Akroan Crusader so you have to put it into graveyard.

  5. Next spell to resolve is heroic from Akroan Crusader despite him being dead, the trigger was still on the stack, so you put a token as a result

  6. Last spell is Titan's Strength it has no legal target, since Crusader is dead so it goes straigth into graveyard.

When you trigger 2 or more heroic at the same time, it's up to you in which order are they going to resolve, that means you can have token to enter first, and then Phalanx Leader heroic to be second, putting a counter on token as well.

What do you guys think about Fiendslayer Paladin being fit somehow into the side deck either with or instead of Boris reckoner?

October 11, 2013 2:51 p.m.

infinitemana says... #13

I actually have Fiendslayer Paladin in the sideboard of one of my other decks, Lions and Smiters and Wurms, Oh My! I find it works really well against mono red (obviously) but I have also run into a few Grixis control decks that it would be good against... I'll try it out.

On second thought, Boros Reckoner is good against any kind of aggro decks, like G/W and mono green

October 12, 2013 12:50 p.m.

have you tried this at fnm? id be interested in how it's performed.

October 13, 2013 7:15 p.m.

infinitemana says... #16

Yeah, i did, and it did pretty well. It's biggest problems were control decks, but it did pretty well against others because of all the combat tricks, this deck is hard to play against with another creature based deck

OK so I didn't do so well at the scg. I dropped out after going 1-4-1. I'm not going to lie I made some misplays so I probably should've won another game or two. As to the decks I played against... I beat a rdw, lost to blue aggro, lost to a green white multi colored aggro. Tied to a green/red aggro deck which if I had more time I would've won the third game. Lost to vesper control and then lost to a white/black aggro deck. FYI I put gods willing down to 2 anax and cede to 3 and added 2 spear of Helios. This actually worked pretty well. Also I added 2 pithing needles and 2 fiendslayer paladins to the side board by taking out rest in piece, which I saw no decks where it would've helped much. Now I really do think 1 Elspeth needs to be added in either main deck or side deck. It would give us a lot more survivability if the game goes that long.

I am going to try at an FM to drop the 4 akroan crusaders, which would suck because I picked up an awesome 3d soldier token someone made, and do 3x soldier of the pantheons and 3x favored hoplite. I'm skeptical though because it won't be good against the biggest multi colored threat ATM aka blood baron

Hey!

I like that someone else is doing a deck with Phalanx Leader and tokens!

I also have a deck like this but more focused on White. Having some trouble getting the sideboard just right though... Please look and comment!

My deck: Swift Retribution

Hey, like the deck. +1. As soon as I saw Phalanx Leader and Akroan Crusader I knew I had to put them in a deck together and your deck has given me some great ideas.

Now my friends and I don't play standard so my deck doesn't have the same limitations as yours, but I'd like your opinion on it. Heroic Mode

I'm trying to keep it budget. The higher priced cards I was lucky enough to draw myself. The rest I'm ordering soon. If you have any suggestions let me know.

Just noticed the changes +Gods Willing what did you take out?

were there any other changes? If so, what and why? (I made the deck and am using it.. if there's a better variation I'd love to know!).

monkeywizard I took out Dauntless Onslaught , it was a little too slow.

You might want to double-check the number of copies of Chained to the Rocks and Gods Willing you've got going on there. ;)

I'm a bit sad to see you've given up on Dauntless Onslaught, though your deck is a bit lighter on heroic guys now, so it's understandable. I use the full 4 in mine, but I also have an even higher number of heroic guys.

I'm not sure I understand the reasoning for having 2 4-ofs that generate chump tokens... that seems more of something you'd want for a token pumping deck, or to survive the long haul on a late-game deck, but I could be off there.

I should post my deck soon so we can compare notes; I put mine together about a month ago and soon after found yours in an earlier iteration, which helped quite a bit in the refinement process.

One thing that I have that I'd love to make use of (yet to draw one) is Dragon Mantle. I know, ugh, an Aura. But not only is it an extremely cheap heroic trigger, it adds to the mischief-potential during combat, but more importantly, draws a card. One of these days I may start drawing one during a game so I can see if it's worth using. ;)

Overall, thanks for posting; even now, it's invaluable for evaluating my sideboard choices.
